First hospitals are not empty. Dropped someone off to A&E during the week and the hospital extremely busy with patients, emergencies and clinics.

As to your one shot AZ 80% figure. You may wish to revisit that.

    https://www.bmj.com/content/373/bmj.n1346

80% is for hospitalizations according to the main thread, your figure is for transmission. I think its safe to say which is more important. I meant hospitals are empty of covid patients or are you suggesting we are not relaxing restrictions because of non covid health reasons. I'm asking you before you accuse of me saying something you never said.

That all sounds positive, hopefully that remains the case.

Can’t imagine there would be any reasons we couldn’t use the surplus vaccines surely? Makes sense.

If NIAC agree to using AZ/J&J for younger people I reckon we can get close to 90% of adults with one dose by 1st week of August.

Would be proper bonkers not to use it but NIAC's advice has been all over the place, so who knows what will happen.

Your statement was "anyone with 1 shot of AZ is 80% protected"

So yes it might be an idea to qualify that. Ditto regarding hospitals. But no I'm not suggesting anything.

Btw the current data from PHE - details that one dose of AstraZeneca is 71% effective against hospitalisation

Please point to a study that shows a flimsy price of fabric or paper protects against an airborne disease. Would you wear a blue surgical mask in a room full of smallpox and expect it to protect you? It won't. And that's a bigger or similar particle size compared to covid.

Mask wearing isn’t to protect the wearer, it’s to reduce the level of asymptomatic droplet transmission in the community.

Personally would sacrifice international travel reopening if it means we can open up society here

What has changed, could of done that months ago ?

Have you a link to that? I believe there was related advice nearer the beginning when everyone was keen to evade the virus rather than the restrictions, but 2 years seems like another stretch..

Yes 2 years is a stretch. Technically 16 months and counting.. unless social distancing comes to an end soon, which I suppose it could.

But no I don't have a link, just look at any general statement made regarding social distancing since March 2020. You aren't supposed to go within 2 metres of any new person. That is official advice which people are treating as serious (or pretending to). Apparently it is still in effect.

If people expect someone to be ousted their job over kissing and hugging in private that is very extreme. It is an informal penalty if they haven't been fired.

You would sacrifice international travel as you are totally opposed to it on climate change grounds.

There is no decision between the two to be had here. International travel is resuming on July 19th under the EU DCC system.
Opening up hospitality on July 5th is an internal Irish matter.

If this is available in "any general statement..", it does not sound like it's something you should have difficulty providing a link to?

Depends where you read, some say over 80%. Anyway 71% is incredible protection. Who cares if people get it and not sick. In your opinion with 71% protection do you think restrictions should be relaxed on the 5th.

We really are an insane little island at times. The obsession with wanting to be seen to be doing something no matter how nonsensical is an embarrassment.

    ???

I'm genuinely confused now. I am providing you with a link to 'prove' that there is a thing called social distancing in which people are expected to stay 2m apart from each other? Why am I doing that?

    Here is one such link:

I wish we lived in a society where this actually happened.

    But this is Ireland.

Martin is a pathetic embodiment of indecision.

The man couldn't decide how to get out of a paper bag without 5 different special groups delivering reports that all agreed identical solutions.

If it's agreed, it could change the course of everything over the coming months.

Very odd that the government might fear a recommendation or lack of one from an advisory body.

A race against time now because of political lies and misinformation. Ironic when you think about it :(

So delay in reopening is inevitable by looking at the news head lines. we are back to square one in spite of all the vaccination drive and herd immunity so far. i forgot Ireland is run by Dr Tony and team. political class is spineless and scared like a child to take any decision to lead this country out this crisis.

International travel reopening from 19 July might lead to new Delta seeding from 2 weeks after that. They are worried about it from 5 July! Don’t think there’s any benefit from those two being traded off. Indoor dining with significant distancing should be safe. Govt has committed to “wet” pubs reopening on the same schedule. It is the pubs where will not respect table usage, distancing etc. That’s where there would be risk.

We didn’t and still don’t have doses. Will probably have 200-400k AZ doses spare from last week in July. Doubt we’ll see the J&J promised; aren’t they something like 90% unfulfilled still, ie 80k received out of nearly 700k scheduled.

Since vaccinations became available it's been a race between vaccinations and spread.

The limiting factor has been supply of vaccines.
