Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I bet he won't, Closing at 5 every day and no Sunday opening is not going to help either.

I never noticed it before but Ganlys have a Support Local Business sign outside the front of the shop. I wonder is that a recent addition pre-empting for screwfix :)

I don't know, but many have these now to try to combat online sales.

I sympathise with them but I think it is going to be hard compete with online sales, hadn’t done much myself until lockdown, now is becoming very natural to do (For me) Prices are very good and reviews from people who have purchased are very helpful.

Screw fix is definitely a welcome addition to the area, but always remember to shop around. Wd40 is 8.49 on screw fix. 3.99 in supersavers just across the car park... As an example.

If you're doing a bulk order, ganleys will haggle on price is my experience.

Same with white goods in ganleys, they have always knocked a little off when ever I've used them and I try to buy local when I can if it makes sense.

Only gripe is the website (just had a quick look and it seems to have had a big improvment on the last time i checked it but still missing entire sections like paint and you still need to ring them to buy /check stock).

Anyone know if the AIT gym is back open? They are doing the vaccinations out there, website doesn't mention anything about it being closed. I need a gym asap before I become morbidly obese.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,084 ✭✭✭rn

I was out there today for vaccination and it seemed like it was open. Give them a call.

Anyone know of a plumber that will install a replacement gas cooker fairly quickly?

Didn't realise you are no longer allowed to replace it yourself anymore.

You will need to search on a site like this https://rgii.ie/registered-installers/
to find a registered gas installer, a plumber can't do it.

Is it not the development at Brawney ?
Or is this a new separate one ?

The IDA bought the land opposite the filling station; the above is around the Brawney estate as it mentions Lissywollen.

Brawny got permission already, this is Lissywollen, on the Ballymahon Road.

It's the one development at Brawny/Lisseywollen. The football stadium address is Lisseywollen.

As mentioned, the IDA have purchased most of the land opposite the petrol station.

You are right, I missed that IDA purchase back in September.

I've used PCWorkshop.ie not too far away from there on two occassions and found them to be fine if a bit pricy.

Access to Mels park is bad. The best thing to do with it would be to swap it with the school beside it for land beside the other railway line.

I am tired of online buying. God be with the days you could go to a shop and meet someone who knew what they were talking about. If you bought a few things from them you had a relationship and they would help you out when needed.

So 170-odd social units at a cost of 54 million euro? That works out at almost 320k a unit. Am I missing something here, this seems very high!

Greenway supposed to be open this weekend according to the builders plan. Anyone know if on track?

  • Registered Users Posts: 433 ✭✭raveni

Unlikely from looking at it, no tarmac laid yet, at least at the white gates crossing.

Has anyone heard anything about the entertainment centre that was supposed to be opening where Texas used to be? https://www.westmeathindependent.ie/2020/11/13/mid-2021-opening-for-e2-million-entertainment-centre/

This is very bad news IMHO

Surely the bus station itself isn't viable with no Dublin Galway service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,717 ✭✭✭roosterman71

A new operator is doing it now right? My understanding is that those commercial routes are put to tender and anyone can apply for a licence. In this case then Bus Eireann lost out to the others. The routes themselves are defined by TII and issue a licence to run them. It would make sense to use the station as the hub for ALL buses but I guess CIE being fairly backwards (I'm looking at you piece of land they wouldn't sell so they could park buses) wouldn't be that flexible. The stations everywhere should be brought under TII and not CIE and have transport hubs then for all carriers.

No chance. The tarmac hasn’t being laid yet. They have been fiddling around the hospital and abbey green for over a month and still at it . Slow

the surface has been worked on, but don’t expect anything until the end of August at the earliest . But yes, it was due to be done by now

  • Registered Users Posts: 859 ✭✭✭Randy Archer

They are currently renovating the station bus bay. I heard it’s costing about €300k . So, it looks like on of the private buses will use it . Be crazy just to do it up and leave it empty .

what happens with the local drivers ? I know the Galway based guys said that they will be incorporated into the Galway city services

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,121 ✭✭✭TomOnBoard

The Expressway decision is appalling. It removes a vital communications artery from Athlone and breaks up the centrality of the Rail/Bus hub by moving the bus service out of a properly serviced building in/near the centre of town out to unserviced open shelters on the outskirts. It destroys the ability of non-drivers to freely move about the Midlands/Country using public transport. For example a person from Kiltoom wanting to get to Portiuncula Hospital could previously get on a bus in Kiltoom, get off at the bus station and wait in the warm for the bus to Portiuncula. Now s/he will have to get off the bus in the bus station and get another bus to AIT, and wait in the cold shelter in order to catch the Aircoach or Citylink to Ballinasloe. Disgraceful!

A seriously retrograde move that local politicians seem very quiet about!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,084 ✭✭✭rn

Very well put tomonboard. One of huge advantages Athlone has is it's central location. Now the previous collocation of transport links is broken. Even the knock on for retail in the town is significant. It goes against everything a "green" government should be advocating policy wise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,717 ✭✭✭roosterman71

Agree with the last 2 posts. The decision though is Bus Eireanns who lost the licence to a private operator. That's why I suggested TII take over ownership of the station from CIE and then use that as a bus/rail station for any bus coming to Athlone instead of those retarded shelters on the side of the road that operators are forced to use now
