Incredible how they're all so scared of him. Even Fergal Bowers when questioning him, you could hear the diffident, self effacing, "No I wasn't" to the arrogant "were you there?" Holohan seems to have a way of shutting down even the mildest of criticisms. Exactly how high and mighty priests and bishops acted in the past.

    Reminds me of this lad

The funniest thing he said was that his shock was NOT caused by moral outrage but by concerns over public health.
That is such an interesting contradiction.
If you are 'shocked', your emotions are triggered and disgust/anger arises.
It cant be anything else than moral indignation, rightly or wrongly.

So any medical professional who displays shock at a potential public health hazard is displaying moral indignation?

Absolute fúcking nonsense. Both hamstrings snapped with that ludicrous stretch.

In this new upside world, he wasn't there to describe the scenes he described and even if he was he couldn't have seen them let alone describe them, all though the scenes he described were 100% backed up by video released on SM later.

People are tearing their ability to think rationally to shreds over an irrational hatred for a person they think is the big bogey man.

    It's absolute carnage to witness.

Its a kind of arrogance that happens to people in a position of authority.

Sorry, do you think he reads your posts?

Have an outdoor summer they said.

There'll be punishment lockdowns and extension of restrictions now to teach us all a lesson.

"Warned" is a slight exaggeration. He gave a generic answer
"When people mix and are up close with each other, and perhaps not protecting themselves with face masks and so on, that's when the virus really starts moving around, and it's often followed with a big surge in cases.

"And so, despite the fact that restrictions are being lifted, I'll say to people in Ireland, everywhere, because the virus has not gone away, continue to respect it."

    Fairly standard

For someone who is obviously completely anti-lockdown measures, you seem to be living a pretty sheltered life. I've been seeing loads of people out and about practically every weekend since this happened. I've had multiple picnics and been enjoying takeaway pints for months now, and have yet to see this meltdown you speak of. Maybe you should have been out and about yourself?

There's an awful amount of smug, hyperbole in that post but, thankfully, it doesn't reflect reality.

Maybe you should have been on twitter or social media the last few days where you would have seen peoples reaction to events up in Dublin last weekend. Did you not hear Tonys comment yesterday comparing scenes last weekend to Jones road on all ireland final day. The man is fuming that people arent listening to him or the muppets in government anymore. If the clowns running the country had opened back up pubs fully we wouldnt have seen scenes like last weekend. People will continue to drink on streets, parks and shebeens etc until pubs are fully reopen and who can blame them

Twitter comments, absolute best way to gauge the measured mood of any nation.

We should do our elections by it.

4th wave of what? Infections without hospitalisations/severe illness/death. Sounds more like a 4th wave of hysteria

Anyone's best guestimate? as to when we will be able to visit public buildings and shopping centers without wearing a mask.

I am fully vaccinated but I have decided I'm not bothered with non-essential shopping unless I can shop without a mask go to coffee shops and the like.

Towards the end of the year I'd say. Population fully-vaccinated (more-or-less), vaccines effective against all variants, what's the reason not to. Drive on

I'm going to give an unpopular opinion here and say to be fair to Tony Hoolohan and more widely to NPHET they shouldn't need to be pontificating directly to the Irish people as that's the job of government. But the government have been pretty much silent for the last 6 months other than the three televised statements in front of govt buildings by a man who needed to be Taoiseach for vanity reasons

How do you know he wasn't spotted by anyone? The vast majority of people do not instantly jump on twitter anytime they see someone remotely famous.
And 2 seconds is more than enough time to spot a crowd.

Either way the entire discussion is a distraction. He didn't like seeing a crowd, he commented, he shouldn't have. But the whole "Lets all jump on something else to be Tony with because he is the reincarnation of Hitler" pile on is ridiculous. All it serves is another avenue for the usual's to vent their spleen at peripheral frustrations which have no impact on the broader issues.

Tbf, you and others will jump through hoops to defend him, no matter what, so by the same token, hard to take you seriously

I also wasn't referring to Twitter if they spotted him

Later in the year, with things like health care facilities probably being a requirement until next Spring.

I wouldn't be letting wearing a mask preclude me from activities until then though.

All OPW heritage sites are free entry until the end of the year.

Indoor dining resumes next month, so obviously you will be able to sit in a café and consume without a mask.

In fairness he's usually right as well

Mid way through Lockdown 1 he wanted MHQ - didn't happen - Spanish variant takes hold in Ireland from August onwards

In October he wanted a 6 week circuit-breaker style LV5 countrywide lockdown - Didn't happen - Irish public shocked at 1200 daily cases a few days later

In December he wanted household gatherings OR pubs open due to what looked like a third wave - govt decided on both - did we have 8,000 daily cases one day the start of January?

The difference then and now, is that cases are largely irrelevant in that they are not translating to hospital admissions and/or deaths

They weren't translating to hospital admissions at the time he asked for it either.

Hospital admissions should stay low with the vaccine program.

Well no, by his own admission he and NPHET were wrong about that. They didn't see that coming...

I also think it's time people cop on and realise what really happened at Christmas. Household visits and pubs been opened weren't the reason for such a rise in cases.
It was slowly building from the last week of November...

How do I know? Because two towns were rampant with it around me. What did they have in common? People who I went to college with and many others who work in London, coming home for Christmas/December. Over the course of that month, it continued to spread by these people meeting others or hanging out with others...Pretty sure many others came home from England in November and December...
This was weeks before pubs opened...It was spread in these locations through people meeting for coffees, hanging out, going for drives, going shopping together.

All that had to be done was to stop people coming into the country, as they had knowledge and data of the UK strain. Do that and what happened at Christmas doesn't happen!

It was building well before Christmas Day and even before pubs reopened. Even if pubs had stayed closed, it would have been the same scenario!

In fairness, I'd want him driving around, tweeting and shaming people who use the toilet and don't wash their hands.

Pandemic or no pandemic, it's absolutely vile!

I'm struggling to see what relevance that has to my post. I'm not complaining about people drinking and socialising. I'm saying that people are, and have been, doing this for months on end. Myself included, and I'd be what some people sneeringly refer to as a Covideer or lockdown merchant.

Your original point was that it would be great to see people out and about this weekend drinking pints and having picnics. My counterpoint is that it has been possible to see people out and about doing those things for every weekend for months now.

That's something that needs to be remembered. Seems to be the default of some people just to shout about what happened at Christmas.

The Government asked NPHET for possible scenario's. Projections if they allowed nothing, if they allowed house visits or indoor dining or if they allowed both. What resulted was multiple times worse than NPHET's own worst case scenario projection. The Government asked for the numbers, and decided that the worst case scenario numbers were still a risk worth taking.

It was NPHET that made a complete balls of those projections and were multiples times wrong. They're as much to blame for Christmas as anyone. Even more perhaps when you consider the unnecessary October full lockdown that led to the Christmas powder keg
