Is this REALLY the mess the Steam reviews are suggesting it is?

No a lot of people were expecting something FDev was never capable of making.

Does have some issues, wait till morrow Patch and "Roadmap"

Roadmap imo means it wasnt ready, a 200 fixes patch a week after release kinda shows that.

    Update 3 – Thursday 10th June
    Many improvements and fixes, including
    Loadout UI flow changes
Adding earned ARX for on-foot gameplay
    Update 4 – Thursday 17th June
    Many improvements and fixes, including
    Suit Livery UI flow changes
    Codex CMDR stats
    Update 5 – Thursday 24th June
    Many improvements and fixes, including
    Shared missions
Galaxy & system map UI updates
    Outfitting UI updates

The roadmap is basically timelines for patches, i reckon by end of June there will be close to a 1000 fixes done.

I have levelled up my DMR and Heist suit by doing 2 types of missions, restore power and loot the entire settlement with your SRV and Massacre doing a lot of those will get you most of the materials to level up some stuff but for the mods there is a different set of stupidly hard to get materials.

One thing which is quite brilliant and probably unintended is to do a Massacre or restore mission(with bad guys) and get your crew mate to rain fire (incendiary MCs or dumb missiles work best) poor bastards dont stand a chance :D

Just the 160 odd fixes this week.

My unoffical count is 564 fixes since release.

I'm new and didn't pick up the new DLC. Vets approached me in the game, switched back to standard mode to coop with me and said they don't like the fps drops the new one causes. Doesn't inspire confidence. Think I should pick it up later down the road.

This vid was shocking. How could the devs be so out of touch to think that wandering around and enjoying the ship's interiors is not a desired feature? It's where you spend 99% of your time. It's one of the most hype things about some of their competitors like SC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,415 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

SC isn't a competitor for Elite. SC isn't something even approximating a game yet, it's a glorified tech demo. Elite has been out for six, seven years and for all it's problems is very entertaining if you're into the genre.

But yes. Introducing a FPS section to a game about spaceships and planets, etc was a mistake. People just wanted to be able to walk around their ship, planets and maybe space stations. They didn't want to have to do foot missions etc.

It's a sci-fi space flight video game. It absolutely is a competitor in terms of pure marketspace. Everything else is irrelevant including year of release or quality.

It's not just that it's the absolutely backwards logic. They don't want to 'waste players time'. Some dude just told me that it can take 60 real-time hours to get to some of the places in the galaxy. The game is a monstrous grind (not saying it's a bad thing though). But a few seconds of enjoying your ship is apparently precious wasted seconds that they don't want to burden their players with while also introducing yet even more grind and resources. Baffling. Either there's a lot of developers on the spectrum working there or this is investor-driven design to encourage more spending/trackable engagement.

Majority of players wanted more stuff to do, they gave us space legs with not a lot to do and what is to do gets old fast.

Problem is that the content they delivering via the "plot" is only appealing to a small minority, it is very good but its also FOMO for most players and more often than not some dont even know its going on.

I want more newer **** to kill, its a space combat game for me. Maybe a few new ships and weapons.

For the on foot stuff play any FPS in the last 10 years with an "outpost" to "attack/kill/steal" and its been 1000 times better.

Supppose I can do jump snipes in an SRV now so thats kinda cool.

Except ED exists :), you know actually was released and for the most part delivered on it's promises YEARs ago.
Versus (and speaking as a previous Chris Roberts uber-fan and someone who really wanted SC to succeed) a game that will never actually appear unless forced by law. They are so lost at this stage with so much player investment that I will bet blood that the only reason Chris has not cancelled the project is he is afraid of the lawsuits and potential criminal fraud cases.
Besides that I bought this update while also not really caring about the on-foot component (I still have not played that). To me it's superflous to the main game. But I want to support the dev and I'll probably get a few more hours of enjoyment eventually from the mode even if I don't focus on it. I'm quite happy to play Horizons mode until then when I need to, because absolutely no other game can touch this for a space sim today. If Odyssey is a failure long term it's an unfortunate withered limb of an otherwise stellar body (yes, death by pun :) ).

I guess you didn't click the link. Anyway I'm not here to defend SC because I have no interest or love for it. My only point was that it's a competitor just like any other modern title in the same genre and only brought up because it has a feature ED players a demanding. It targets the same demographic and is an immersive space flight sim. All other conversation is irrelevant so have fun hating on SC it's not exactly a brave position.

Man gimme the guardian AI making a come back, more ground vehicles rather than just the one, give me missions where its multi stage ie in ship,on ground,in ship. Atmospheric planets, more ship launched fighters. Give a bit of love to power play to make it more relevant. Make thargoids more relevant.

Just a few of the things I'd take over ship interiors any day.

Still not a lot to do tho.

Final update, game is better but again if I was new to the game, it would be mind blowing at the amount of **** on offer.

So when is the console release? I'm on PC, but I kind of shelved it after the Oddysey launch (as it wasn't what I'd hoped) but I meant to go back to it after they fix as much as they can for th econsole release.

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,394 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

Was supposed to be around now but last I heard it was pushed back with no fixed date I thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Bought Odyssey today,im sick of waiting for a console release.

Not even a shred of news so said feck it.

Expectations are pretty low but at this point I got to just play it.

Wiped my save and starting a new commander...see yall in the black o7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Did they upgrade the visuals for odyssey? Like in general not just the planets.

Don't remember it looking as good. Although maybe I've played to long on console lol

Speaking of that cross save would be nice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

lol Update 9 for Mays DLC is out this week, it has incrementally improved during each update.

Would imagine its worlds apart from console at this point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

Update out, too many fixes to note.

But its well over 1000 since Odyssey came out.

I've been waiting to get back to into ED, bought Odyssey back when it released - was very disappointed. I won't be getting into the walking/suit type grind, but I hope the planetary design / surface stuff is improved since then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Can't comment on how it looked on release and some of the planets can look a little weird from space but other than that it looks good to me.

Not sure if i have been playing on console too long but it definitely looks to have got a graphical upgrade.

Im running a 3080 and 9700k at 4.9Ghz so framerate are pretty good too

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,394 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

I'm pretty sure there was a graphical upgrade released across all versions on pc when odyssey came out.

lads im now Star Citizen for Life.

i wish you the best in your future endeavours.

Honestly didnt think I would ever hate a game as much as ED......

Fess up dreamers, how many hours played is it now? 🤣

I haven't played E:D in ages now, I keep thinking I will go back but my interest in getting Odyssey has fairly dissipated since launch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

ED 1654, Have 34 Billion or there abouts.

    Clarity:

Honestly didnt think I would ever hate a game as much as I hated ED......

Had to drop this soon after getting odyssey. Started again a few weeks ago and had worked way to an asp and had a few quid in the bank and then they announce the profile transfer fron console so I stopped playing again lol

Still no word on a date for transfers opening from frontier, typical, so hopfully by the time it does come around I still wanna get back into the game.

Starting from scratch isnt so bad if just worried about credits,it's the engineering grind I don't want to have to repeat.

    Hopefully hear something soon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

There is no grind with engineers anymore (for ships) land at a crystal forest and then head to the guardian sites, 1 day of collecting and you will get g5 everything by trading down.

Tedious reloggin at the gaurdian sites but at least the cyrstal forests can be done without relogging and with a buddy in the new SRV.

I personally waiting for ED 2 or whatever is next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jonski

That might just be enough to get me to boot this up again . The whole engineer thing just wasn't for me .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

HIP 36601 ( I am parked there now lol showing a buddy how to do it)

This system will get you the 5 you need, depending on your engineering levels you may need a 2nd trip or a slight diversion to trade (inventory limits)

Its actually kind of chill whilst collecting.

System is simple get G4 materials on planet, go to trader and trade down then up. You should only leave each planet when full of the main material

The planets are of course 250,000ls from the sun but you knew that :D Bring a DSS scan the planet and land only at the biological sites, you will get max amount of each one per planet.

Yttrium, Technetium and 3 other iums.

Pin your blueprints or use Inara to track your blueprints (Inara is grand if you have a 2nd monitor, it sees the games API and is reasonably quick at refreshing, Inara lets you track the preceding blueprint requirements so if you want g5 Multicannons with Explosive rounds, you need g1,2,3,4 etc)

It then shows as NEED on your inara page.

You still have to unlock the engineers no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

    No idea?

What transfers from console? If you do its not hard to unlock them except the mining one :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

I'm pretty sure the engineer unlocks transfer over from console.

Few of them are painful, permits, minimum distance from starter area etc.

I more meant I'll keep playing when all my stuff is transferred over. I dont mind grinding money from scratch but getting the engineers and engineering I currently have on my ships again from scracth would be painful, imo anyway

I’m a beta backer from back in the day, and still playing it. Odyssey’s launch was brutal, but in fairness to them it’s gotten much better but still wouldn’t try it with a spud PC. Runs way better than Star Citizen (which I own, but come on like, can’t get around that it’s a pyramid scheme).

Deffo lost patience with it repeatedly over the years, but playing with people in a group/squadron has made it far more enjoyable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Might mosy on over and have a look, still in an asp until the console to pc cmdr transfer but looks interesting

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,394 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

Console to PC save transfers are live now:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Just used the profile transfer there, very handy and worked pretty much straight away.

Auto-Dock now works for planetary landings😮 Now that's a QoL feature I can get behind!

Well, just binned off my squadron I started after it got infiltrated by MAGA lads, and one of them changed the discord to autoban anyone who "took the lord's name in vain" of all things. Oof.

Just joined up with the Buur lads temporarily. Any interest in starting up an Irish squadron, or are there not enough of us for that? (Apparently there used to be one called the Crimson State Group but they died out.)

Looks like there may be a big shake up coming!!

Plenty of options for players too. Can keep things as they are or , as id hope for, embrace the mayhem😁

Let us walk around our ships, you damn cowwards!!!

Overhaul actually completly redo FPS and all missions relating to it.

    Atmospheric planets.

Some new ships? Since the last one, Mamba in Dec2018 Star Citizen has released 553 ships 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Yeah not having new ships in that long is just crazy!! I've had every ship in the game, bar Cobra Mk IV, for ages now.

    Even have the guardian SLF's😁

Be interesting to see how the update pans out, with 7 more stargoids arriving soon could have a situation where the bubble gets over run🤔

Frontier giving the option to stay on an older client makes me think they may actually let that happen.

I'm currently getting credit balance into a healthier place givin gonna be fighting thargoids.

Doing mostly combat missions as I'm rusty and playing with M&KB now, mission target spawns seem to be in a much better place than last time I was doing combat missions so that helps.

Never really had a fully thargoid focused combat build so I'll work on that once I get the credit buffer.

With college and part time job time is limited but I'll just plod along.

Wonder what happens to ships stored in systems the thargoids take over?🤔

Dude how do you not have literally billions at this point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭EoinHef

    Spent it all😅

3billion in assets but had a measly 90mil in credits when I logged in the other day.

Once I got all the ships I wanted I kinda stopped caring about credits, enjoyed the guardian stuff and engineering a bit more. Didn't bother too much with the meta credit earning at that point

Oh and power play, I've about 8 prismatic shields in storage, 2 tier 7's and one tier 8. A bunch of pack hounds, imperial hammers etc for ships that they still haven't released🤣

Then there's having top tier internals in every ship I own, that **** is expensive lol

    Just looked it up:

    1.145 billion spent on ships

    2.781 billion spent on outfitting😳

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jonski

I've tried again ............. and again the thoughts of learning all the controls ..... again .... breaks me . Even with the new build and the 4k monitor I just can't muster the enthusiasm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,143 ✭✭✭ilovesmybrick

Actually yeah, I installed it on a new machine recently and was about to start it up, then realised I needed to map everything again and spend an hour trying to take off. And then remembered once I got all that I'd lose another 50+ hours to the game!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jonski

    I found a workaround ............ I bought No Man's Sky :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,415 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

I also finally got around to unlocking the Guardian FSD so I might go for an extended trip out to Colonia, Sag A* and Beagle Point. Once I've collected some mats so I can repair along the way, etc.
