Jesus lads, cut the man some slack. I seem to recall Ken hosting an episode 2 or 3 years ago and was just as bad.

Murph's Blackboard Jungle segment on the TV show was one of the best things about SC Live. Don't mind them Ciaran.

Yeah to be fair to Murph, Ken is a shocking host. Just sounded flustered and confused the whole way through while trying to ask questions/give his own opinion. He's grand on the political pods though.

I enjoyed Murph hosting. He had some good moments, i.e. comparing Ken to Partridge.

I don't get the Murph bashing at all. He is spread fairly thin across all sports they cover and is informed I would say on most of them. His GAA stuff is well covered and his general contributions complement Ken and Eoin well. I wouldn't let the lauding of Ken and Eoin automatically reflect poorly on Murph. The pod is far the better for him.

Think Murph is a perfectly serviceable host when Eoin isn't there. He's nowhere near as good as Eoin but who is really? Mark Horgan is decent as well when he very occasionally steps in.

I mean Ken can't do it as he's pretty much a one sport man.

So Grealish to City is a "done deal" according to in the know Migs Delaney, lets check back in September ....

The continued disdain Ken shows for Lampard warms my heart.

Bit late on this one but great to see Ken calling out those pathetic crocodile tears from Pep after the last league game. The idiots on reddit actually bought it.

Ken went “hog wild” on the naomi osaka story, very harsh. I expect Richie will be a little more sympathetic.

I found Ken's take on Naomi Osaka to be refreshing and frank.

Using Mental Health too often as an excuse deminishes mental health illness.

She said she's been suffering with depression since 2018 though, so that seems fairly valid, no?

If one sportstar decides they dont want to do press conferences and is allowed away with it then all the big stars across sports will do the same and they will all play the mental health card.

If tennis wasn't covered by the media then Osaka wouldn't be one of the highest paid sportswomen in the world. She is biting the hand that feeds her.

Its one of the responsibilities of being a tennis player and if she doesn't want to do it that's fine but then she should get another career

It would be valid if there was meat to the bones of the statement. But it's hard to match her claim of depression with that of her achievements and her fulfillment of other sponsorship contractual obligations which brought her in €55 million in the last year.

Maybe money can't bring you happiness and steady mental health, but refusing to do standard tournament pressers because of mental health issues is a bit of a stretch for me to take seriously.

I enjoyed Ken and Murph's take on it and mostly agreed with what they had to say about Osaka.

Wasn't the podcast recorded before Osaka withdrew from the tournament and before she issued the statement about her own issues with depression? They were reacting to a more general statement she made earlier.

They should really get Caitlin on again quick

Not sure exactly what to think in this particular case, but I do know that young people throw the term Mental Health at anything they don't like these days.

Her sister didn't do her any favours with the post on Reddit. Not sure how she thought it would be helpful.

Honestly sick of hearing this "press conferences are part of being a professional tennis player" nonsense. 99.9% of press conferences are completely banal, uninspiring, insipid, media trained ****e. And tennis in particular seems to specialize in having absolute dunderheaded journalists asking some of the worst questions ever put on record. The fact there are any contractual obligations to go and attend these things is a joke.

Fair play to her I say. I hope she is genuine in her actions, and I hope she can get the help she needs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭Beersmith

Well they are part of it but should they be is another question. If she came out and said they are BS and not doing them then fair enough. Putting the mental health issue in there muddies the waters

How does it muddy waters though? Unless you don't believe her, I can't see how it muddies the water at all. If she's genuinely suffering with depression and anxiety issues then it's a valid reason for doing what she did.

Was listening to otb a while ago, and Joe pointed out that the issue was that the original statement led to open interpretation, combining mental health issues along with the consistently similar questions and her sisters post.

But knowing what she's subsequently put out, the organisers don't come out in a good light at all.

Well if she has a condition where she cannot do her job then she shouldn't be entering the competitions where it is a mandated part of the competition.

I see that as different to the other issue of should any player have to do these press conferences seeing as they are so outdated etc.

Two different scenarios IMO. That's why I say muddying the water

    Do they not?

Well in my opinion you are either fit or unfit to take part in any competition. Whether you take part in any competition physically or mentally unwell is the responsibility of you and your coaching team but as ir stands the media obligations are mandatory! So if you plan not to take part then don't sign up for said competition and make your point that way. You can't have your cake and eat it as they say

The hand that feeds her is the sports media like TV stations. They pay for the rights to show tennis from viewing figures of fans and subscriptions of fans. I wonder how many of these fans give a shít about post game interviews? I don't watch tennis, but we know in soccer they're a load of bollocks.

Ever notice what's behind an athlete when doing an interview? Sponsors of the events.
Sponsors probably put them in contracts with events so when pictures appear online/newspapers/Tv the athletes are pictured with them.
Without having to pay the athletes themselves.

It's quality pods like today's that make the subscription a bargain.

I think they did well in getting Caitlin back on as I'm sure this is a busy week!
