But then...the whole premise of this thread is a lie... It's almost as if.....

Oh man, we are through the looking glass.

Not a lie. Listen to them talking about George Soros. They come to same consensus after awhile and will agree with other theories from that.

Stuff like "Qanon" demonstrates that someone on the internet can make up the most ridiculous absurd conspiracy - as long as it feeds into people's biases and prejudice and skewed world views it can gain traction

Who exactly are you talking about?

We've established that not all conspiracy theories hold the same weight, we've established that some conspiracy theories end up proven facts, we've established that even the most outlandish theorists differ when it comes to the same theories

Is the whole premise of your post that some people believe mad stuff and you think they are all right wing homophobes?

    Hardly radical thinking.

The Bible is a better one.

Not proven false by the conspiracy theorists. And they will defend that. That is my argument. Go to a house party post Covid and listen to them.

A lot of conspiracy theories are weak and fantastical.

However if not trusting currency speculators and tech monopolists is the standard by which someone's pov is considered unsound then you might as well just say 'There are no bad people' and leave it at that.

Everyone knows how Soros made his money. Even some of his old business partners like Jim Rogers hate and mistrust him. Why the average person is expected to take him at face value is anyone's guess.

But does he pump money to undermine systems? Where can I sign up?

Look at the funding of nearly any "foundation" or NGO trying to affect some kind of societal "change" in Ireland and you will see The Open Foundation listed amongst the donors. It is a fair question to ask why we should take a convicted inside trader and currency speculator who caused hardship to millions at his word.

A normal rational person applies healthy skepticism to any situation.

Irrational people with extreme world views filter information according to their biases and confuse that with skepticism.

Would the Chinese lab leak be considered a conspiracy theory?

If you believe the virus was man made then yes...

But that the lab was doing work on the virus, and it escaped is highly likely what happened...might explain why early on that outdoor transmission was apparently non existent, as the virus probably evolved with in a lab setting, and thus had no need to protect itself from UV rays

As University of Newcastle? Can you give examples?

Conspiracy theorists and those with extreme beliefs love to "ask questions" to create innuendo. They often have little interest in solid details/facts, which they seem allergic to.

This is the wrong way to think about it.

It can't be ruled out that it escaped from a lab, but there is no direct evidence for that theory. So logically it's wrong to say that it's "highly likely".

I think most modern conspiracy sites are fronts for the far right.

The Covid pandemic was a real “boon” for this lot.

George Soros' speculative activities on the GBP and Asian currencies in the 90s caused huge economic and societal damage. This is a fact. He has been convicted of insider trading in France. This is a fact.

    We know.

I am referring to all the silly conspiracy theories about him that blame him for virtually everything. He's now superseded by Bill Gates who the conspiracy community have decided is the new "villain".

    Are the Rothschilds insignificant now?

They're not. They never give references. Just the banal phrase 'research it'

Rothschilds are so early 2000's, even Gates is getting old, Fauci is the new hotness. The latest is that he created Covid, not kidding.

Conspiracy theorists do this. Conspiracy theorists do that. Sinister right-wing forces. And even, Lord Help Us, religious types! GASP Where's me pearls?

It's all a bit conspiratorial from the anti-conspiracy crowd.

Which is what happens when you stare into the abyss.

Sure some people, even ones on this very site, believe that Dr Tony Holohan has some sort of “vendetta” against the drinking class of this country.

It’s truly bizarre the levels of “fetishising” this has received. Desperate lads taking all their impotent rage out on a medical professional doing his best to get us through this crisis.
