I could see it being the UK alright - James sounds a bit ropey on that clip on the official Youtube channel

The song is a very specific type of British pop too. I heard a lot of music like that in London but I haven't really seen it travel beyond the UK

Few thoughts on the running order, some perflexing decisions. Malta being put on 6th is the biggest surprise. Could mean either that it didn't do as well as expected in the semi's, or perhaps they're tying to bury it for some reason.

Cyprus opening to me says that they didn't exactly light up the first semi final, I'm thinking they finished 7th-8th. Some are a bit pissed Albania got lumped in 2nd place, but someone has to get it, so may as well give it to someone who hasn't a hope in hell of winning :p

Baffling as to why Spain got the pimp slot of the first half, I think we all thought that was going to Malta.

There's some strange decisions in the second half too, a lot of quality songs clustered together, and Norway and f*cking Sweden given great slots. If I could make just one change it'd be swapping Lithuania and Norway's places, think the whole half would flow much better then. As it stands now, three of the last five songs are very poor. At least we're ending with the San Marino song though.

Ukraine following Lithuania is a strange one too, if anything I think it probably hurts Lithuania the most.

They should just do a random draw for the running order, this picking and choosing the order is stupid

I remember the year the Louis Walsh protégée went, Brendan Murray - singing a very bland song. He was a good singer but the song / staging, etc., just weren’t up to scratch.
Ryan Tubridy played another contender on his morning show that had been submitted after the song was picked. It was like something from Broadway or the West End - seriously catchy and far better than what we sent. Beginning to wonder is the selection process the problem.
There could be a National Final allowing for both jury votes (50%) from all 4 provinces / regions - plus public vote (50%). To make sure we don’t send a Donna & Joe or a Turkey again...
Also get it away from the Late Late. Wrong audience & show to be associated with the Eurovision.

Someone else earlier mentioned if we were to revert to a proper selection process we should have Irish public votes and non-Irish juries and I completely agree. It makes sense, see what appeals to the foreigners ears!

If we had Irish juries, well guess what old and young dinosaurs be on those little insider panels...
Now that I think about it, I'd even be very nervous of having Irish public votes as anything and everything here is turned into a 'my county' thing no matter how crap!

I think the running order is done on multiple factors now.
After each semi, the qualifiers are randomly pikced for each half - not position but which half
Then I think the automatic ones are drawn but 23rd place is reserved for one of them which is drawn randomly as well.
They take into account staging (eg Spain with it's massive moon picked for before the break so they can dismantle the yoke), type of song etc

They don't want it random as the second half or any section of the night could end up with all the dross together and lose audience I'm guessing.

Any performers just wearing lingerie would need less time to get ready, That could influence running order

Yep, the random draws often resulted in very uneven draws. Iirc 2011 one of the worst examples of this, a load of busy, energetic songs together in the first half and a much slower second half.

Running order isn't based on results, EBU has those, producers don't have access so Malta's position is due to it's genre, staging etc.

Did we have a national qualifier or did RTE just select Leslie?

I thought it was a well known fact at this stage the producers have the results, and try and balance the final running order based on them? Otherwise it wouldn't make sense to put the highly fancied Malta in 6th place. When a perceived contender draws 1st half they will almost always land somewhere in the 10-13 range.

They just select. Apparently it's a panel of music experts who select the artist.

I'm convinced that both juries and the public will vote for it. Good chance imo.

I think they do that in Sweden (non Swedish juries).
I think bringing back the national final would be the best move, not some corner of a random late late episode, a proper stand alone programme.

One person qualifying for the final in eight years isn't good enough, RTE are making a hash of selecting the song and singer

The Melodifestivalen format is the best to do imo. It works for Sweden, clearly. We need something like that, especially with foreign juries.

I don't think we would have the depth of entrants, but something like that on a smaller scale would be great.

    That’s a shocking statistic.

They don't even have to be Irish. We could get Flogging Molly to enter.

They are more Irish than Flo Rida is San Marina

what time and what station is it on tonight please?

I'm havin a bit of food now for soakage :) before the nuptials
I think 2 songs are absolute standouts, no surprise from me them being Italy and Ukraine.
I'd be very happy if one of those win and wouldn't be annoyed at all if Malta or Portugal (both more traditional eurovision entries) did it either.
Switzerland would annoy me in a 'is that it' kind of way and I have to say I don't want Iceland to win even though I felt really badly for them in 2020, it's just a poor attempt at recreating their classic from last year (same as Lithuania have done) :(

Looking forward to all the sarcasm and funnies on this thread throughout it :D

Italy long overdue for a win and judging by the buzz I think Måneskin can pull it off.

Can't wait for tonight. Even with ireland not competing it's one of the best ones in a while. Can't see any outright winner, although I put down a couple of quid for Switzerland because I have a feeling too.

They look and play like a real band with chemistry. Very stylish 70s look to them too.

Bulgaria drifted out to 50/1. But I maintain they are a good each way bet, should get a good jury vote and pick up plenty of eastern European votes too.
