    BBC:

Actor Danny Masterson, best known for his role on the hit series That '70s Show, has been charged with raping three women in the early 2000s.

He is charged with raping the women, who were all in their 20s, between 2001 and 2003.

Mr Masterson, 44, denies the charges and has argued that his membership of the Church of Scientology was leading to his persecution.

Sheesh. Heard his name getting mentioned during the whole #metoo / Weinstein thing. Sickening to hear.

He's trying to blame it on being a scientologist as well. People are only after him cause he is a member, Yadda Yadda blah blah. Yeah sure Danny.

Really breaks your heart if you were a fan of That 70's Show. You know his brother is Christopher Masterson who played Francis in Malcolm in the Middle.

Ah, like anything else, I'll just wait until it's been investigated by the appropriate authorities.

Might be true, might not be true. You can't believe anything just because there's been an accusation.

    I didn't know that.

These rumours have been around for a while. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, I guess. So weird that he thinks he’s being targeted for being a Scientologist though.

I would wait to hear the evidence first and then judge. Remember William Roche and Michael LeVel and George Takei?

Real nasty stuff coming out about the Scientologists in relation to this case.

At the time of the assaults, Masterson and all three of his accusers were Scientologists. Several of the women said it took them years to come forward because Church of Scientology officials discouraged them from reporting the rape to police.

Instead, they were forced to rely on the Church's "internal justice system", prosecutors said.

Scientology officials told one survivor she would be kicked out of the Church unless she signed a non-disclosure agreement and accepted a payment of $400,000 (£320,000), according to prosecutors.

Judge Charlaine Olmedo allowed both sides to discuss the dogma and practices of Scientology.

But Deputy District Attorney Ariel Anson told jurors during the trial: "The Church taught his victims, 'Rape isn't rape, you caused this, and above all, you are never allowed to go to law enforcement.'"

Hmmm - internal "justice" procedures, swearing victims to silence, compo conditional on NDAs, and avoiding referral to law enforcement at all costs. Sounds very familiar...

    Scrap the cap!

Wasn't he also accused of stalking the wife of one of the guys from the Mars Volta (band)?

Sounds like a real mess of a case. I wonder what evidence they had to convict after 20 years, particularly when the previous jury had not been convinced. But maybe more details will come out post sentencing.

Thats some proper sentencing right there....

You wouldnt get that for murder in Ireland...

Sure Martin Nolan would have given him a suspended sentence....

Yeah and they convicted this time 8-4 in favour. Not exactly a landslide. Something seems very off about the sentence when it seemingly not a clear cut case.

Next Man City manager: You lot may all be internationals and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Pep. But as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is to chuck all your medals and all your caps and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest **** dustbin you can find, because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by bloody cheating.

It was never my cuppa. Useless fact, there was a British remake called Days Like These, an anomaly in that its usually the Yanks who remake UK sitcoms rather than the other way around. Anyway it was terrible.

Won't somebody please think of the rapists.

That was bad. But Matthew Broderick killed two people in Northern Ireland and got a £100 fine...

The 8-4 split was on the third charge, where they failed to reach a verdict.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,555 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Also, one of the telling aspects is the failure to report at the time was due to scientology policy. Scientology has since done their usual smears and attacks of the women.

He's 47 and got sentenced to 30 years (to life?) and I heard something about only being eligible for parole after 25 years. So he'll be 72 years old to get freedom if he's lucky. That's his life fuc*ed. He might not live that long sure. But hey, he raped two women so a scumbag gets what he deserves.

That was an accident though and both are in touch with the families to this day as far as I know

That is a hell of a sentence alright. Good to see. As many have said, that would be a 5 year sentence here with 3 suspended. Seems oddly long though. Must be other mitigating factors we don't know about. Or maybe it's a shot over the bow of Scientology group.

I actually quite liked what I saw of The 70's Show (Admittedly, not much). I'd catch it every now and again and enjoyed what I saw but never actually made an effort to record it or anything. I was going to say it is a shame for the other cast members that this happened because I'm assuming it's on some streaming platform somewhere and it's likely now to be pulled. But, since the streamers don't pay royalties anyway, it's moot.

Him being 47 now and 30 years in prison? There's gotta be an off-colour "That 70's Show" joke there

Matthew Broderick was in a car accident. He didn't shoot them or attack them with a knife. What he did wasn't murder.

Just looking at the wiki page on this

There was loads of harassment of witnesses by Scientologists ans then this.

On June 7, 2023, the judge sanctioned Masterson's previous legal team of Tom Mesereau and Sharon Appelbaum for leaking confidential discovery material to Vicki Podberesky, an attorney defending the Church of Scientology in a related civil lawsuit, in direct violation of "repeated directives and orders to refrain from providing criminal discovery to litigants and attorneys in the civil case." The files contained confidential information of the victims including addresses and other personal information. Podberesky then used the information to file complaints against the lead prosecutors in Masterson's rape trial, requested the police department start criminal inquiries into the two detectives who testified in the trial, and alleged that the Masterson victims filed false police reports.

My personal view is 30 years is not harsh enough, should be life without chance for parole at a minimum, but honestly the gallows would be more fitting for anyone who commits rape.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,153 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

Ah. Definitely sounding more and more like a warning shot at scientologists alright so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,325 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

In this case he's 47 and it's a minimum 30 year sentence. So he won't be out till he's 77 at the very earliest. And to be eligible for parole you have to admit your past crimes and say you're sorry. Wonder if in 30 years he'll be able to do that

First trial was a mistrial with the jury leaning to acquittal on all charges, the DA has to be seen to be hard on scientologists so goes at it again. Two ways of looking at it. Either you can't "hide" from justice or you keep bringing him to trial until that no turns into a yes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85,171 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Do you know why it was a mistrial. I don’t think you do.

  • Registered Users Posts: 968 ✭✭✭Str8outtaWuhan

1st jury was deadlocked on all three charges, with the foreman from the first reporting afterwards they were leaning towards acquittal due to serious inconsistencies in the stories of the women. Took about 3 seconds to find that online. Well reported at the time.
