Thinking about it a bit more - the problem is RTE.

They want to 'own' the Eurovision entry.

But again, they are so fuppin dislocated from music culture in Ireland.

FYI above - the Dervish song was written by John Waters........how in Gods name do you decide, given the amount of great song writers we have, that we'll get John Waters to write a song.

From memory he wrote the song and submitted it to the competition , as was his right as a member of the public

:D Nice to see she's kept her sense of humour amidst the disappointment.

they sent dervish a few years ago and gave them a song which didnt suit their style at all, so made a mess of that as well

Completely agree, though they should have know to rearrange it to suit themselves, I was watch TG4 a few weeks ago and they came on and were much better than what they did for eurovision. Nice song and good band but not good together.

I think Switzerland have the best song this year.

Why would any artist that has been nominated for a Choice music award ever want to be involved in the eurovision? Come on, we all know it's a cheesefest. Would be the end of their career.

    It’s made some careers.

Billie Ellish is mostly of Irish descent right? She could give it a go.

We sent 2 sparkly camp lads singing a catchy song about putting on your makeup. If that didn't work nothing will so mabye it's time to stop trying desperately to win

It's at least 25 years since we made any sort of attempt at winning, let alone a desperate one. We barely attempt to get out of the semis.

I don't think the singer needs to have any connection to the country they represent

Yeah, when Billie Ellish wins then we could have The Script the following year followed by Snow Patrol. I'm sure we could talk Bono and the lads into giving it a shot too.

You might get The Script at this stage.

We actually try really hard to follow the winning trends we just fail.

Bono and SP wouldn’t be cool enough.

Naw stick with Billie. She could easily write a Eurovision type winner. We’d give her freedom of Dublin in response.

Jesas, I just watched what we sent to the Eurovision.... she can’t sing!!!!absolutely dreadful ....and then the stupid tacky paper bits beside her... pure crap.... u can’t blame anyone but ourselves for funding and allowing the deciding board to send such a mediocre (at best) artist to represent us

Ooof, just announced there on Facebook that Duncan Laurence (2019 winner) has tested positive for Covid. Wonder will the presenter who handed him the award on Tuesday will be affected :/

    Why?

Its a chance to perform in front of millions.

What performer would not want that.

Say what you want about Lesley Roy - here song has 3 million hits on YouTube.

Some brilliant Irish songs in the past year - Anseo by Denise Chaila for example - have a small fraction of that.

Different audience. Would take up a lot of your time and effort to play a gig that would not get you where you want to go.

Most performers straight into obscurity almost immediately after.

I wouldn't call Anseo a brilliant song. I don't get the whole Denise Chaila thing at all. Could be my age. Also I have pretty much zero interest in Rap or songs with mostly spoken word. I don't consider it music.

No wonder you don't get it if you hate rap and spoken word

A different audience that is bigger.

    The numbers dont lie.

Devils advocate - what would be the harm in it.

The upside is that at least we could have a song that represents us.

Her song has 3 million hits on youtube and she'll be forgotten about in 6 months time. What is the long term benefit for her? She's not going to grow an audience through it.

People on this thread have been posting that singer/songwriter Molly Sterling's entry in 2015 was a very good song (I honestly can't remember it). That was 6 years ago, how is Molly Sterling's career going?

There is a very significant rap and spoken word scene here.

Whether you like it or not, it represents the type of contemporary music found in Ireland in 2021.

    Unlike Lesley Roy's song.

Yes I know there is a scene. I don't classify it as music.

Christy Moore would be brilliant if he could be convinced to do it

Imagine him on stage with Declan Sinnott and maybe Steve cooney

    Dramatic ballad ....

and then have the curtain fall and Kila absolutely belting into a trad session

    Technicolour lasers and digital background

It would be a show stopper

May or may not be a showstopper but at least people in Ireland could get behind it......

Colm Wilkinson regretted Eurovision. He stopped what he was doing to represent Ireland in it. Says he was very lucky to get back into Broadway. Very old interview somewhere in the archives. Pre internet.

I think one of the rules of EV is you can only have 6 people on stage.

A giant snake gyrating across the stage and at the end a cloud of confetti shamrocks!
