Irish Backpacker bailed after stabbing in Australia

An Irish backpacker who was allegedly involved in a gruesome stabbing of a house guest after a night out has had her bail conditions eased so her mum no longer has to chaperone her to school.
Katie Eileen Murtagh, 26, had been ordered not to leave her house at all without her mum but those provisions were eased in Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday so she could attend tourism and travel classes three days a week alone.

But if she wants to go out anywhere other than college, she must be accompanied by her mother at all times, the court ordered.

The 26-year-old and her boyfriend Patrick Earle were arrested on August 29, 2020 after Oliver Solan was found bleeding out in the foyer of their Randwick apartment in Sydney's east.

The alleged victim's ear was partially severed, he had several other stab wounds and his punctured spleen was later removed in surgery.

She was silly to get involved with her previous boyfriend. She obviously wants to study and improve her life. She has removed any references to him on Facebook and Instagram and has posted powerful, inspirational quotes. She doesn't look like a bad person. I hope that she learns a lesson from this incident.

not much of a 'backpacker' with her mother over there is she ? Almost if the dailymail needed an excuse to put pictures of a reasonably attractive young lady in bikinis on their website, for the vermin that frequent it to ogle over then attack in the comments section

They were mentally ill, its a disgrace that they were put through the legal system instead of recieving counselling and hugs. And so on, and so forth

The Dog Hotel was my local over there for years. A backpacker can't bring their mother over there with them. DM has some wrong information there.

Always find it mad when people involved in such serious crime plaster pictures of themselves all over social media with not a care in the world in the aftermath.

    Different Gravy.

Weird journalism. She’s clearly not a backpacker anymore if she ever was. Clearly she’s living permanently enough in Australia. Not that we know her situation exactly because the daily mail hasn’t bothered to find out exactly. She’s in Australia so she must be a backpacker.

    There's bikini pics?

/looks at article before some adblocking popup

Meh. Pure Barbie head on her, I feel like I need to get a tetanus just from looking at her. And no decent person has the ability to randomly stab someone during a dispute.

If there is an altercation and accusation made, a media outlet can't just say who is the victim and who is guilty. Only after a court passes judgement can they call them a victim.

This is especially noticeable in rape case coverage.

Anyone know if Ozzy sentencing is much different than most western countries? Over here women get half the jail time for similar crimes as males do, and are jailed in "rooms" as opposed to cells.

Reading up on the psychology of it lately, it's very interesting and its not all biological either. In some jurisdictions prosecutors wouldn't bother taking cases to court because juries wouldn't convict them; even in cases where guilt was not in question because "women don't do those kinds of things".

    Are you serious ?

Those "powerful" quotes with a photo of someone that is supposed to have said it (most of the time they haven't, but that doesn't matter to the idiots that post them) - for me are a sign of an absolute f*cking lobotomized moron.

Her fella didnt kill anyone in Ireland. The lad who killed a fella here was a friend of her or her partner.

I think that Irish people get very harshly treated in Australia. Basically the Australians are always keen to blame foreigners for everything.

The difference is they'll deport them out after jail unlike here , I know two lads that got deported , one had over stayed his visa , he got into a fight , the cops found out he'd over stayed his visa , he was sent to a detention centre and deported back to Ireland all in the space of 3 weeks unlike here where cases can go on for years , where solictors milk the taxpayers all the way along .

It seems that the Australian media shorthand is to refer to Irish immigrants as backpackers regardless of whether they are or aren't, and Irish media copy this.

I actually knew an Irish guy who was murdered by stabbing in Australia (he intervened in a row between two junkies, one produced a knife and stabbed him), media reports at the time referred to the case as "Irish backpacker stabbed in Australia". This wasn't today or yesterday, it was 25 years ago.

My impression is similar, Australian media and society is somewhat prejudiced against the Irish but the prejudice didn't come from nowhere, a certain % of the Irish act like scum and give the rest a bad name.
