Just get an EHIC if you're moving within the EU.

    Does that cover repatriation costs?

    Ya I have it already.

Has anyone actually rang their insurer to see what's what at the moment? :p

I haven’t bought insurance in over 10 years for EU travel. Can’t see any advantage to it.

I was the same to be honest.

Little one came along and I just thought I may as well.

Pre Covid we would have flown several times a year to family abroad.

We have annual multi trip cover for €50 a year for a family of 3. You could probably get it for less, I think our cover is the middle of the road option.

I wouldn’t travel without insurance. It covers things other than medical costs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭Feria40

Per the travel insurance website multitrip.com:

"The policy will not cover any claims if you travel to an area the Department of Foreign Affairs is advising against 'all' or 'all but essential' travel"

Per the DFA website if I type in Spain:

    "Exercise High Degree of Caution"

    Different no?

Edit: Never mind, the main page says "There is a Government Advisory in operation against all non-essential international travel"

Pity they wouldn't update it at country level in order to avoid confusion (mine at least!)

So the fine could fall away but the above advisory could stay in place :(

    Just like Summer 2020

    Just like Summer 2020

But with the exception of Covid related illness travel insurance was valid last summer. As of now that is not the case

Well you’d want to make sure your best Calvin Klein jocks are covered incase your suitcase gets lost :pac:

I agree 100%. Travel insurance is a no brainer. You're taking a huge chance travelling without it. The EHIC relates only to medical needs -and not repatriation if you're unfortunate enough to require try that. Cannot believe that people would not buy insurance- it's so cheap.

If your suitcase gets lost, it's the responsibility of the airline, so you don't need travel insurance for that!

So as of tomorrow no 2000 euro fine for non essential travel to any place that will accept you. For example if visiting UK you can fly there and.then return via Belfast without compulsory quaratine. Just to get that straight.

Genuine question. Why is there no 2000 euro fine from tomorrow?

Of course Id buy it in normal situations but if its not gonna cover me this summer because of the travel advisory whats the point?

So realistically I’ll be covered for anything C19 related (incl repatriation, God forbid) by the Canaries and other medical conditions in public capacity due to EHIC. Thats not bad cover considering no Insurance company here will cover me due to travel advisory.

Because the law that brought it in only lasted till 10th May

We don't know yet but the original law is lapsing and there has been no mention of it in the media/by government.

That's not to say Donnelly won't renew it in the morning.

The last renewal was for 6 days which you might consider unusual except it coincides with the opening of inter county travel

But that is covered by the insurance on your rental car!
Travel insurance for Europe in particular, may be something that you really don't need.

Not necessarily, some people might not opt in for the extra insurance that covers your belongings as in the case i just mentioned. Try again. Anyway i never bother with insurance unless I’m travelling to the states.

I suppose it’s for 2 things really in the EU:

    1) your accommodation is burgled

    2) Most countries wont pick up the full tab of public cover with your EHIC so travel insurance may cover the balance.

Thanks, that makes things interesting. Probably not something they're going to advertise.

Yes they will- to at least the level of what the HSE offers. If you have vhi etc., they may also cover treatment.

But as a previous poster said it’s dirt cheap so no harm in having it. But I don’t go buying special insurance when I go to Donegal, so can’t see why I need it when in Spain.

Not true. We were on holidays a couple of years ago and had a family emergency and had to fly home straightaway. If we didn't have travel insurance the whole episode would have had us out of pocket to the sum of about €2000. The insurance we had cost €20.

For some people it’s the cost of MHQ which some policies will cover so long as not travelling against advice.

I’m guessing that you have never had your suitcase damaged or lost? There’s a fixed payout irrespective of the value of the actual items.
