Salthill Beach today, the crowd got more mental later on.

Not saying we should we be encouraging gatherings like this in a pandemic, but this is way less risky than anything indoors like house parties etc.

With vaccinations accelerating at long last, here's hoping we see plenty of mental crowds over summer, and worry less about covid each time we do!

It's now dark. There are house parties all over the city.

How do I know? Went for a walk about 10pm.

Must have been a long walk to cover the entire city. None near me.

“Gardai attended salthill beach this event, Saturday, April 24. A number of persons were gathered in the area. Gardaí engaged with them and they dispersed. Gardaí are conducting further inquiries into potential breaches of the public health regulations. Inquiries are ongoing.”
It comes just days after parking restrictions had been lifted there. Cones and barriers had been placed there earlier in the year at the request of local gardaí to limit movement in the area and discourage people from visiting places where social distancing could prove difficult.

You could hear and differentiate between 3 different houseparties? In one fixed location?

    Total BS.

Hah, cones could be put back next week at this rate.

I'm all for making the best of the easing, went to coral strand yesterday was amazing. I just hope we don't repeat December with a short-lived easing because we go mental again.

Also, a lot of over 70's are still waiting for second jab plus time after to be safe.

    Not rocket science.

    One four doors down...family gathering.
One in the house in the row behind us two doors down... student party every two to three weeks.
And one ioud one from the next estate over( we're on the edge of our estate). Couldn't pinpoint that, but could give a good guess going by local chatter

So take your BS and shove it where BS comes from.

I'm afraid that is exactly what is going to happen.
Judging by the comments in social media, and the reaction of AGS, this is acceptable and in fact - rational behavior. Therefore, I expect more of it to come, and I'm sure Galway isn't the only city in the country seeing things like this.
In addition, yesterday I also noticed majority of cars going from Garda HQ to G Hotel with plates that are not from Galway. It makes me believe there was a lot of indoor gatherings of friends and families from all over the country.
So, enjoy your time while you can, it looks like we'll have another "New Year holidays", this time in summer.

I'm sure a few cars driving down the road on a sunny day, meanwhile having over 20% of the population at least partially vaccinated and low hospital figures, is indicative of another lockdown.

The social media comments are indicative of a population at their wits end of an excessively long, dragged out lockdown.

Folks not every non-G reg is from outside Galway. I'm living in Galway with a D reg myself so I dunno why people keep using it as a measure for anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 82 ✭✭Selenophile

Look, between GMIT and G Hotel, it is not just a few cars, its more like dozens. I am well aware that many people in Galway have "non-G" plates, but I was surprised to see only one in every 5 or 6 cars to be "G" reg. There were a few UK plates as well. Please don't tell me that only 20% of cars in Galway have "G" reg. :D

Now you made me look like a scaremonger, and I'm really not one. :D I just see these events similar to having a sample in statistics, that shows attitudes of general population. We all know that we don't need 100 % of population to misbehave to have full lock down again. It really takes much less than half to have outbreaks and surge in numbers and to go back to "5 km from your couch only".

Lets hope my worries are unfounded and I misinterpreted what I saw. ;)

A bit related to the house party thing. Anyone notice throughout this, there have been people posting house party pictures and videos on Snapchat with their exact location tagged!? :pac:

Anyway, counted 9 camper vans out by us over the weekend. Some c*nts left beer cans all over the place.

Unrelated to covid but important to know as it means its especially important that covid doesn't increase in the community at the moment.

They said on the news today on rte that bed capacity in Galway city is now at 106% - not a reflection of covid issues. UCHG has released a statement that the hospital is extremely busy with a lot of people in A&E who have to remain there awaiting a bed.
They're asking people who feel a Dr can help them to attend a dr instead and to understand that you can have no companion with you in A&E.

11 days since the large gatherings in Salthill, Galway numbers holding low so far (10 today) - looking good for outdoor gatherings!

I guess but who is to say that they were mainly from Galway. Could be from Donegal?

Even if everyone on the beach that day was from Donegal, they would still have frequented shops and takeaways in Salthill. Plenty of people on Twitter seemed to be hoping for a spike in cases 2 weeks after the event, looks like they will be disappointed. Outdoor, with a good sea breeze, is safe.

Outdoor with a good breeze is probably safe enough as long as they aren't hugging and kissing but those people were mainly young and even if they got Covid they wouldn'show symptoms but could pass it on to older people that may get ill. I guess that would show up in 4 weeks or so?

Anyone go to the walk-in centre at the very very distant airport?
What was it like, queues, party atmosphere..?

Seems very car-centric for a "walk-in" test centre! Looks like a good setup they have though.

I'd guess it's very well positioned for its target audience.

If they were aiming at City centre or west, it would be in a different location.

Went Thursday evening. No queue. Very quick. Easy process. Negative result next evening.

Anyone here from outside the city get the vac yet?
I've signed up and waiting for a date but from what I can gather I'll be expected to go to the racecourse which is nearly 60 miles from me.
I don't have my own GP but there's a surgery nine doors from me and another one seventeen doors up the road.
Surely the won't expect me to get public transport to the other end of the county?

I'm facing similar. Older relatives had theirs in their GP but seems I cant? Have to bus/taxi to Ballybrit instead of walking to the GP.
