Well Ted, if it didn’t pass you and arrived on your doorstep then it was for you, if it passed you then obviously it wasn’t for you. It’s actually basic logic Ted.

Unless it was left by DPD in which case it hasn't passed you but it probably wasn't meant for you either.

Something more than a meaningless platitude. Although I think the worst is, "cheer up it could be worse". :D

    Then you expect too much.

No offense but if someone's motive is to 'cheer' you up, that's kind. The motive should at least be appreciated. It's not anyone elses DUTY to cheer you up.

But it can still be for you, even if it wasn’t intended for you.

Read half the thread but omg ffs.

It's a saying. Imo it's not meant too be picked apart literally. Its not a saying I use myself, but it means '**** it, pull yourself together, there's more out there for you'

It is a comfort thing but not necessarily in the superior crap shyte you hear on here like 'humans are inferior flawed beings that need to be fooled by themselves' and no its not self deceiving. It's actually straight upl saying 'face up, **** it what's next'

The value in the message is that of the person saying it to you. The comfort is not self deceit but that someone takes the time to say 'hey it's not a big deal, etc' people are not fools, that is the comfort in it. That your pal or even yourself is telling you '**** it, move on to the next'

They are trying to comfort the other person by saying 'its no big deal' and that is the value!!! It's not what they are saying literally!!! It's that they took the time to comfort you, to say 'hey there's more out there for you'. Even when people say it to themself, it's just good selftalk.

You need better pep talk skillz. Maybe attend the next Ted talk by the OP.

    MIND BLOWN!!!

    There’s more, plenty more.

Common question often asked, which already has a presumption, “if a tree falls in the woods does it then make a sound”?

The answer is no, do you know why the answer is no?

I’ll tell you what I think feckers stole a router from me once. I ordered a router which was supposed to come in a box, as you would expect. The box came but not the router. All I had was a box with a picture of the router.

(Which wasn’t nothing, as it was a nice looking router and a decent enough box, but wasn’t very useful for the old WiFi.)

So did the router pass me by because it wasn’t for me, and did the empty box not pass me by because it was for me? Is that what people are saying?

    Screw em.

I just think it gives great comfort, especially for those of us who aren’t religious in the catholic sense. I believe in karma and multiple lifetimes.

I think the answer is yes unless we decide that sound is something that has to be heard.

But we can’t just “decide”, it is what it is.

A tree hitting the ground does not make a sound, it gives off vibrations, the purpose of ears is to turn vibrations into sound, no ear no sound. Therefore the answer is no.

    Here’s the definition of sound.

vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person's or animal's ear.

It’s a stupid question anyway, fit to amaze 5 year olds.

Yes, so you need a vibration and an ear to produce sound, no ear then no sound, so a tree falling in the woods with nobody around to hear it merely produces vibrations.

I was hoping to hear from someone who believes in this phrase actually.. I think it would be interesting to hear their point of view.

I understand it in this way, that if something is for you, it comes easily to you.

And I find it true. Whenever I had to make a huge effort to get something, I usually didn't get it or came to a conclusion that it would be bad for me. But sometimes, when time is ripe everything miraculously falls into places. So I believe that it was meant to be then.

I actually experience it quite often, when I have a clear vision what I would like and make proper preparations, I come across it, so I can get it.

So whenever I come across obstacles I just check, if it is what I really want or maybe my approach is wrong and I should find a proper way for me to succeed.

I read in few interviews, when writers have a writing block, they later realised that they were going the wrong way, so when they choose another way writing run smoothly for them then.

Don’t wait for opportunity or people to give you anything. You’ll be left waiting in many cases.

Create opportunities and give to yourself..take ownership of your life, take and value everything and everyone positive that comes your way.

Generosity is all good, however selflessness is a crock of bôllocks...

Selflessness.. ”concern more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own.”

    BS...

This simply isn't true on any level.

You could work hard for a certain something all of your life and it may elude you.

Likewise, someone could sit on their arse and do nothing and something they want could arrive to them by sheer dumb luck.

The idea that by simply working "hard" you'll get what you want is nonsense.

For me it's not. If you work hard you are prepared for opportunities coming your way, so you can grab them.

The ear definitely doesn’t produce sound. I think sounds are just sound waves, you need some animal there to hear the sounds. Just a problem of definition, not a philosophical problem.

It's not altogether an incorrect saying. I think there is a certain element of happenstance and being in the right place at the right time in life, but, to a very considerable degree, you make your own luck. As Michael Jordan said, 'you miss 100% off the shots you don't take'. It has become an overused cliche, but there is a morsel of truth in it.

you miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky - Michael Scott..

Seriously though let's take a job interview for example. You come out and realise you had a terrible interview. You don't get the job. Not because it wasn't for you. But because you had a terrible interview. I find it hard, as I if I had put in a better effort, learned a broader range of info, practised earlier, or could control my nerves the hypothetical interview could have gone a lot better.. You know?
