Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Thanks for organising this, I’ve had a rough few weeks and definitely wouldn’t have attempted a 5k TT without this initiative.

The body has been in a heap for weeks and I’ve had low grade constant pain (that peculiarly doesn’t get much worse while running). I’d the physio twice this week and only decided last night I’d try it and if I was doing it I was going all out!

First mile was too fast at 6.03 but despite a struggle at the end I was happy with the way I hung in.

Garmin says 3.12 miles in 19.02

Strava says 3.11 miles and 5k PB of 18.58.

Either will do :)

So it turns out that the source of my so' ass is my psoas :-)

Had a good loosen out last night (Achilles had gone a bit tight as well) so will take it handy today, light run tomorrow evening maybe and then have a crack at the 5K TT on Sunday at some stage.

I should possibly recalibrate my goal but I'll leave as is for now I think

It’s going to be a DNS for me I’m afraid

Popped out for a mid paced 9K last night to see how I was shaping up and while the run itself was fine there was a disconcerting grumble from my hip a couple of times.

I probably need to rehab the psoas properly while continuing with low intensity low mileage. As tempting as it is, I don’t think hammering out a full effort 5K today is a good idea in the long term.

Good luck to all - hopefully the virtual run era is coming to an end soon :D:D:pac:

Take 2 - 32:42

I hope I was allowed to do it again - feel like I've cheated a little bit giving it another go!! Feeling I could do it again made me wonder could I pushed a bit more and perhaps drop those 7 seconds from yesterday and get 32:xx  - but bearing in mind Womble Hill and OBM were in the 2nd and 3rd miles. The whole way round I tried to balance between trying to make up for the time I was going to lose on OBM and not go too hard too soon to make it tougher than it had to be. As it turned out when I got to it I didn't feel so bad, so rather than sacrificing time to it unnecessarily and leaving myself with more work to do for the last stretch I kept the pace up! Get me!! :D

I stuck to yesterday's plan of pushing to the Whitestown Roundabout and then give it everything until you get passed the bottle bank (no stopping before it! ;) ) The last part was a complete and utter mind game - from if you're thinking of anything else other than surviving you're not going hard enough to damn it I've gone too soon I'll never make it - the bottle bank is moving further away!! So I remembered Swashbuckler's 'yes it hurts but its for a good cause' and I brought everything back down, focused on what I doing and fupping ran!!! :D. Must have checked the watch a gazillion times to make sure it was the correct distance :D.

Thanks so much to the organisers. If a second go counts thanks even more :D. I'm flamin delighted with me life either way :D.

34:05being the first 5k as part of a longer a hill run. I'm only including this as I've completed the other monthly challenges, and there's bound to be Brucie Bonus points at the end of the year if you've completed all 12:D

Kurt, if completing the twelve monthly challenges is your main motivation, then you might want to have another go at this. The first 5k of this run is neither a looped course, nor an out-and-back run, so I’m not sure it qualifies as a legitimate attempt. I won’t make the final call on this, but better be safe than sorry.

So after a hectic month of sleep deprivation due to little baby C's arrival, I put on the singlet for the TT today.

The routine started early this morning as I took C from 6 to allow my wife get some kip.

Handed him over and woke the toddler at 8. Breakfast for all, then pumped up the tyres as hard as they'd go (probably the only TT participant who had this in their prep!)

Jogged to marlay with buggy and plan was to 3 x DBR mile loop.

Got frozen soundtrack playing for E and started the 5k workout on my watch. Started hard on downhill, and plan was to maintain the pace as best I could on the second half of loop which is into breeze and uphill. Wash rinse repeated this strategy for 3 laps.

Splits ended up as 3:45, 3:49, 3:46, 3:51, 3:48 and a total time of 19:00 which was bang on prediction and it hurt in all the right places. No idea how.

Really enjoyed and so wouldn't have done it if not for this TT.

Also passed it on to my college buddy WhatsApp group where we did a team event, which i think my team won by 2 secs across teams of 4!

I had no plan B for a route worked out. I was up and out early and Marlay Park gates were not opened yet. So my morning started off with hopping a wall and breaking into the park to do the parkrun loop as I had planned.

I'm not sure if it was the big hill in the 1st kilometre, the head cold I'm nursing or the lack of any sessions in the last 3 months but my 5k "Effort" of 19.28 felt harder than I expected. I'm not sure I would have gone that much faster, if I had gone flat out today. Either way, I'm happy to be on the comeback trail and back to easy fitness building runs for me now. Thanks for organising.

+1 this will count towards the monthly challenges so rules be rules.

On that, thank you to everyone who took part. Still a few to go. The Challenges had approx max of 20pts on offer. So, we'll do results like last year for starters.

I'm thinking for the challenge
10pts for everyone who completed (+ReeReeG)
5pts if it was a DNF as having a go is having a go

To make up an additional 10pts
+2 if you equal or beat last year's time
+3 if you got within 5 secs of prediction
+2 if you got within 10 secs of prediction
-2 if you were 60 secs faster than prediction!
+5, +3, +1 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd per category

Any objections? :)
Also PM me or post ideas for June Challenge, thanks

Well done!! Multiple attempts aloud of course but only the brave will attempt more than one 5k

Great reading all the excuses reports coming in, that's what I love about this place - thanks to the organisers for making us all feel like we're racing together!

Boards 5k Anniversary TT 25th April 2021

After a fairly consistent bank of training earlier in the year, I've been grounded recently for a number of reasons only do the very odd jog here and there or walking/jogging combo. Not the best prep this week with two longish bike rides on Wednesday and Friday and yesterday was spent sitting in a car for 3+ hours on day trip to the beach (1.5 hours each way). I was determined to run this as best I could but not to overthink it, or worry about any of it in the way I normally do. I found a 'pro pacing' thing on my watch which allows you to set up distance and desired time and it calculates the pace for you, quite handy! Saved that in my watch last night. Woke just before 7am this morning, had coffee and porridge with berries for brekkie and stole downloaded Shotgunmcos's easy run playlist onto my watch thinking it would probably be perfect for my race pace :D. Did some warm up high knees, jogging and hamstring stretches in the back garden. Faffing complete, I set off for an easy warm up jog to the park. I'm getting quite good at running easy, the nose breathing is helping hugely to keep the pace and HR low as it should be. Reached the park but had forgotten to check the start of the parkrun loop, having never done one in this park! Decided not to worry about it did a few more quick drills before pulling up the Pace Pro workout and off I went.

Mile 1 9:20. Straight away the pace was hot, I was aiming for 3 x 10 min miles, my watch was showing me 7:15 :rolleyes: I had told myself earlier not to go out too fast as per usual but.... slowed dramatically trying to find 10 min mile pace but still too fast, mile 1 came in at 9:20. It felt okay but I knew I'd pay for this toward the end and there went my aim of a sprint finish!

Mile 2 9:43. Still trying to slow the pace I was starting to feel the heat and wondering why I hadn't worn my singlet instead of a black t-shirt. Tried to bring the breathing under control with deep long breaths through the nose as well as the mouth (not at the point where I can nose breath while running fast - yet!!). I focused on fast cadence and narrow stride, also trying to bring the arms in to do a bit of the work, remembering to smile and trick the body into thinking it was having a ton of fun! The park was starting to get a little busier but people seemed to notice I was 'racing' and kindly moved aside so I didn't have to. Looked at the watch a few times to see how much further before this second, never ending mile would end.

Mile 3 9:57. Had to give myself a good talking too now, thoughts of stopping and quitting were strong but I slowed again and just tried to maintain a pace that was hard but not going to break me. A few heart palpitations that I sometimes get when running in the heat reared their head and again I focused on controlling the breathing, the watch was now on distance display and I probably did more harm than good glancing at it every few seconds to see it stubbornly staying put . So happy to hear the beep for mile 3 and finally, the pace was almost the target of 10 min miles...

Last bit How far is .11 of a mile anyway, the watch will beep any second now, aaaaannnnyyyy second now...... still running, WTF? The screen was still on distance for fear my Pace Pro wouldn't actually stop the watch (it didn't) so as soon as I saw 3.11 the watch beeped to say I'd completed the distance but the workout hadn't stopped. Paused on 3.12 for 30:15, faster than the 31 I predicted and straight away I was thinking FFS I could have done sub 30 if I'd paced it properly!

Walked the 1.69 miles home browsing in some shop windows along the way enjoying the lovely sunshine, what a beautiful day!

Analysis How to run a race on zero training and in fact, zero running!!!! Have to say I'm happy with that, it was hard (very hard) but I'm buzzing now. The new runners (Reebok Floatride Energy 3 Shoes) were lovely to run in, nice and springy. The foot was a bit niggly when I got home but it's okay now.

Thanks so much to the organisers and participants who make this place such a fab community to be part of! This gives me an incentive to get back training sooner rather than later.

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/6667599669?share_unique_id=11

Very nervous running this, after basically a lot of base training i wasn't really sure where I was! Had all my gear laid out last night & felt that happy nervousness that almost compared to the night before a race! Set of to the PP and parked on the Furze road. Did my warm up, had decided to wear the 4% flyknits as they still have miles on them, felt really good. Got my mind into the zone and set off. Really happy to keep this consistent & not kill myself as I didn't know mentally if I'd be strong enough to hold on like a lot of others can. The 1st 3k went by really quickly & I was feeling comfortable. The next k a little harder but nothing like i've experienced previously! The last k got tough & I pushed on, I was afraid it would be short so ran slightly over the distance. Thrilled to see 20:28 for the 5k which is an unofficial PB for me. The main aim of todays run was to feel the race pain again, to see where I am at. Everything clicked today, my pace, my form, my breathing & my mind. Going away from this with some confidence. I have about 4 weeks left of my new 5k running structure so I am confident that I can attempt a sub 20, not guaranteed but happy to give it a shot!

Well done to all who ran & thanks a mill to the organisers:D

I'm thinking for the challenge 10pts for everyone who completed (+ReeReeG) 5pts if it was a DNF as having a go is having a go

I hope this isn't suggesting freebie points for me! My pride won't let me take them :)

Take them. No event can happen without the volunteers.

Beat my 30 year old self by 20 seconds today

17:55
Get in!!
Check out my activity on Strava: https://strava.app.link/4OJceXsoKfb

The 4th km was grim central. Every step into a headwind. I was fading physically and mentally. Lost 10 seconds on previous split. Got it back by the end! Progressing nicely, happy days :)

Well done, everybody. I know there’s still a few hours left. But I’ve begun tabulating the results already. So far this is what I’ve got. Please let me know if I’ve missed anyone, or if there are any mistakes with your actual time. Also, there’s a few people in the table who have only stated their results without providing a link to their run, or a screenshot. The disciplinary committee are meeting tomorrow and don’t look favourably on such behaviour.

Zico Think you’ve missed DubhG?

If we could just keep the table as it is and not sort it into any order that would be great :pac:

Bit late with the report here. Just opened a beer so I can finally reflect a little.

Quick background. I just completed a 30 MPW training block focused on 800 m and had my TT for that on Monday just passed. The rest of this week so was only easy running.

I ran a 5k on a whim one November night last year. One of those occasions where I decided just before I went out the door that I'd have a go. I was just feeling pretty good so though why not. This morning wasn't quite that feeling. In November I ran 17:17 and so this became my minimum of what would be acceptable. Surely I'd have built up more of a base coming off a solid training block, albeit for a different distance.

I posted my plan already which on reflection wasn't the best approach for today given the wind. i.e. 3:24 for each km.

No nerves today really. I'd nothing to lose after my main run earlier in the week but did want to beat my PR. Really didn't know how the body would respond to the effort. I ran the reverse of the course I ran last year. A 2.1 km loop through a business park. As it turned out I'd a 750 m straight of the wind in my face and only a 600 m equivalent with it at my back. I should have accounted for it more in my planning for splitting.

1st km: On the windy straight to start but only for 100 m. I set off nice and comfortable. Watching my watch closely. Running another 300 m or so before the good 600. My first mistake was not making the most of the boost here splitting 3:23 for the first km. Perfect I thought, but it wasn't really.
2nd km: Up a slight incline before turning into the bad 750 m. Feeling like I was working harder but not too bad. Still watching the watch I felt I was on pace. Just coming up to the end of the lap. Split - 3:26. That's good again I thought. I've averaged around target pace for the first 2 kms.
3rd km: Confusion reigns here. I'd the wind on my back for most of this km. I was working alright but maybe could have worked a little harder. I let the pace probably hit 3:30 a bit too often and definitely could have kicked a little more. I was definitely trying to conserve my energy for the next straight into the wind. My worst km split - 3:31. The alarm bells didn't ring here though I still thought I could make it back. Just work the legs.
4th km: And the legs did work as I motored up the slight incline again before facing the wind. Problem was, as always my lungs started letting me know I should probably take a breather. Feic off lungs. Digging in into the wind, I'm glancing more regularly at the watch as I try to make up the lost time. It's definitely hurting now. I think my arms were feeling it more than my legs if someone can explain that to me. Split 3:26.
5th km: Genuinely too shagged to calculate how fast I'd need to run the last k. I made a complete stab in the dark here and a decided a 3:10 might get me there. Could I really pull that off? I definitely ran the 4th at a harder effort than was ideal as I was struggling to pick up the pace any more here. Onto the home straight with the wind at my back for the last long 400 m I finally managed to wind it up reaching a decent pace. My watch was now set to just distance and time as I didn't want to overrun the 5 km mark. One check of it and I think I see 16:34 for 4.8 km. Jesus, how did I manage that I actually might make it. Not realising I was talking about a 26 second last 200  So there I was flailing for all I could when, as sure as reality follows dreams, it soon ticked past 17 minutes. Oh, I must have been mistaking. Silly me thinking I was Sebastian Coe. I gave up a little at this point and started slowing for the last few metres. Stopping the watch for 17:13. Last split - 3:26.

A little quicker than November but my first instinct was disappointment. I'd no reason to believe I'd go under 17 but now I will have to obviously. I feel I messed up the first km and the 3 km. Both had the wind on my back predominantly so I should have made myself run them a little quicker. Did I leave 13 seconds out there today though? Probably not and then if I ran a little quicker I might have been more annoyed to have been even closer and just missed it. It's a double edged sword but one I won't stop swinging around any time soon. Garmin gave me 17:12 but I'll use the Strava time as it's in the TT group.

I forgot to mention 17:13 is a PR so it has been a good week all told. Also Strava tells me there was a 3:16 km split in there somewhere too. I guess between km 4-5 so there's another bit of encouragement there.

Enjoyed all the reports again thanks everyone that took part. And thanks for organising.

So it was a DNF for me :(

Had planned to go out today although it was later than expected having had to drop a little to the park to meet her friend.

The training has been inconsistent and only easy miles for the last 2 weeks so was going out to try and see where I was at.

Getting up to the top of the Tolka Valley park the wind was much more blustery than I expected so I thought I'd take it behind me for the first k, work nto it for the next 2 and then behind again for home. Started steady and didn't tear off, which was nice for a change, got into a rhythm and then turned into the headwind. At 1.7k I looked at the watch, not for pace but just out of suffering, headed up the hill and at 2.5k I just stopped it. Comfortably uncomfortable was just uncomfortable.

There was only 500meters to go until I turned the corner and had the wind behind me but I just couldn't do it. It's a really strange feeling to quit but I think I just wasn't ready for it.

Thanks for organising, it was great to see all the reports, cracking times and the chatter.

Had a go, knocked time off last years effort. :D
Not training for speed but delighted to knock over a minute off last year

Cursed my decision to use Tramore Valley park with it's hills. (Had to compare like with like, having done the last one there...)
Cursed Rob Heffernan for putting his name to a trail with so much hill in it.
Cursed my decision to switch to a different loop on the second lap.
Cursed that lap for having an even steeper uphill drag that took what little good was left in me.
Cursed every brain cell I had for not realising that the second lap plus the first lap didn't equal finishing at my starting point, meaning;
Cursed my poor calves & lungs as I finished up hill
Cursed the intense pain these piddly distances inflict - there's nothing like to long slow burn of a proper distance :P

Subsequently:
Laughed at Lambay Island breaking into a bloody deserted park in Dublin to do his TT
Daydreamed that with a little practice and a level course, I might break 20, someday, somehow ...

Fair play! You're doing some great training. That sub 20 won't be too far away once you stop running laps with hills

Absolutely gutted here, I done my weekly runs Monday / Wednesday / Friday and felt great - my Friday night run was propably the most enjoyable run I've done since I started my C25K plan in February so I had high expectations of beating my time Saturday morning. Ran 7.3kms and loved it.

(Now for the petty excuses :( )Got up at 8am Saturday morning and straight away I was feeling off, runny nose and aches in my left leg up near my hip / groin area. Thought I had just slept funny. Had breakfast and thought I would be able to walk it off, it felt a little better after an hour or that so I decided to put on my running gear and head out for the TT. I always warm up with a brisk 5 minute walk and I started to get sore after about 2 minutes - kept going to the 5, set the watch and headed off running - I got about 300m and had it didn't feel right so I decided to stop, I was barely able to walk. My first running injury.
I walked slowly back to my house and relaxed for the day and it fely better by that afternoon, so much so I done a spin on the bicycle. Got up yesterday morning and said I'd do it today but walking down the stairs it got sore again so I said no running for me for a few days, I went for a spin on the bicycle instead (doesn't cause any pain at all) Ironically I'm feeling fine today but am still not going to chance running for a few days. A good friend of mine is a physio so if i'm still sore wendesday, I'll go see him.

Very disappointed here as I was looking forward to it and was hoping to beat the 32 mins for only the second time. Looking at my friday times if i take out the first kilometer (which includes my warm up walk) I done the next 5k in 34:13 and that was at a leisurely pace so I know i wold have been near or better than my target time of 32:20.

Next time.

Final Results! :)

Some amount of work to transition from google docs to a table :( Plus the usual tracking links through Strava etc.. Big thank you to both ReeReeG and Zico10 for supporting this month. You really helped and its so much appreciated!

Final results, judges decisions applied. Unless there is a glaring mistake, we move on :)

Well done to all who participated, and particularly those who scored PRs, came close, beat last year or just had a great story to tell.

The Results are sorted by the Monthly Challenge points. If you have not been taking part in those, its a series of monthly running challenges and this month your points will count towards the overall total. Well done to LaineyFrecks who topped the lot in this months challenge with a maximum 20 points :)

The "AG" column is your percentage vs the world record for your age group, if thats something of interest. Podium results are below and a breakdown of how points were applied is below too.

I stand over my 5k, on a parkrun course with known start and finish points. And there was no 'watch 5k rule'. :D

But I'll accept the judges' decision and take the deduction in my stride. (Boo, hiss!)

Thanks to the organisers. :)

Hi All

Updated Monthly Running Challenge Table after the TT. Plenty of moves this month.

So, we have at least one idea to go ahead for the May Running Challenge and that will kick off very soon. It is VERY different to any we have done so far :D:confused: However, if you have any ideas for the series please let me know. It would be cool to keep it going all year and there might just be something at the end of it :)

I too will take the deduction with my customary good grace -
(in other words the organisers are all now dead to me :pac:)
.

I've about 30 "matched runs" on that route and it's a bit eye opening in regards to the variability of GPS results. Over a 5K there could be plus or minus 20 seconds which is significant enough. On the upside some results look a lot better in hindsight if I go by actual distance and not GPS distance. Anyway all that is probably for another thread.

Hopefully next year I'll be finishing a 5K training block when this comes around again. Thanks to the organisers for their time and effort. :)
