    Don’t know if people know this (I’m sure at least some do) but Homicide was sort of a forerunner of the Wire. It came from a book by David Simon and Ed Burns, who wrote the Wire, based on Burns experiences as a Baltimore detective. Probably the reason the Wire feels so authentic.

    I can’t think of a series that describes the toll drugs have taken on Black America more thoroughly than The Wire. Simon obviously has a left-wing viewpoint but the characters are so well drawn they escape any didactic intent. The unlikely redemption of Bubbles becomes a central story in the show and one of its sunnier themes. I thought the depiction of Baltimore schools in Season 4 was over the top until I saw a documentary on the subject that was at least as alarming.

    So, yes, well worth a watch. I did have the subtitles on. Some of the lingo is hard to catch.

    It's funny, mid-season three is the point at which the payoff begins, in my opinion. By that stage the universe of characters and the connections between them start to really become apparent. I would heartily recommend continuing if you have time.

    Anyone who loved The Wire (which I did), David Simon did a earlier mini series called "The Corner". Its on youtube. Its about life on the street corner in late 90's Baltimore with alot of same actors (who are much younger) but are playing completely different roles. Real tough and harrowing but well worth a watch. This series came from his book as seen here

    Reading it now. Excellent. A lot of the same issues are seen in the Wire but are expanded further in the wire though.

    The Wire

    Deuce (New York Porn Industry in 70s,80s,90)
    Treme (New Orleans Post Hurricane Katrina)

    Some acting from Bunk (Wendell Pierce) and Lester (Clarke Peters) above.

    Hes also in Treme iirc.

    For anyone remotely interested in music or indeed the politics of Hurricane Katrina, Treme is a must. It also features some of the cast of the Wire, but musically some great guest performances from Spider Stacey of the Pogues, Steve Earle , Doctor John etc.

    I often reference this show (and more recently you could say Line of Duty but to a lesser extent) that they made the brave decision not to even attempt to spoon feed people exposition or slang or police terminology....... if you cant keep up well then tough ****...... I can't fully remember when I watched this but it wasn't at a time that you would go online if you missed something in an episode and catch up that way.

    For that alone I always had allot of time for it but it touches very closely to my top 5 TV shows of all time. I didn't love Season 2 and the McNulty taking the serial killer thing just came too out of left field to sit right but the remainder some of the best TV ever made. I mist go about a rewatch next winter

    Among the top American dramatic series, I’ve never seen such a contrast between Season 1 and 2 - a whole different angle on the illegal drug industry.

    Binged this show a few weeks ago on HBO Max and really enjoyed it, I did find the last season to be the weakest and probably best they ended it there. Still well worth watching

    VPN to US
    set up google account based in US
    Tied my PayPal to google play store downloaded the hbo max app onto phone and subscribed with monthly fee coming from US Google play account.
    Have HBO on my Nvidia shield android tv box and have to have vpn running on it for the app to work.
    A bit of work but worth it for HBO back catalog of shows and first run movies works out around €13.34 a month which isn't bad

    Y'all reminded me how good this is

    Some great characters including McNulty and Omar. It's a slow build and not as dramatic as Breaking Bad but the better for it, in my view. The docks season was my favourite, season 2 if I remember rightly.

    I rebought after lending the box set to someone that's how good it is.

    I remember watching Season 1 for the first time. The arc in it was unreal. You needed to concentrate on it. A lot of people couldn't get passed that/.

    Simon deliberately left The Wire with rough edges which gives it the feel of a documentary at times.
