If they do decide to add additional EU countries to the list on Tuesday, historically how long has it taken these countries to be on the list in practice?

Just asking as I know someone moving home from one of the 3 EU countries mentioned Sunday week. There's only flights once a week so could be a good idea to try get here this Sunday maybe?

They said within days of next Tuesday's meeting. However, like others said, reading the latest it would appear there may be some back peddling. They've only mentioned 3 EU countries, so there's plenty of scope for that person to take a train and fly from elsewhere.

Would anyone have a link to an official list of essential reasons for travel? I can't find anything on gov.ie and DFA.ie just puts up a link to gov.ie

I would err on the side caution and fly this Sunday

An environmentalist isn’t going to support aviation

You can add Deputy Sean Fleming to the list too, he was in full support of expanding the EU list of countries to MHQ. I would recommend anyone interested in getting out of here make your displeasure known to your local TD, MEP and anyone else who should be added to the list.

Is the principle of Freeom of Movement in the EU enshrined in law or just a principle that isn’t legally binding?

Apologies if this has been already answered but is there set criteria for adding Countries to the MHQ List ?

And also for removing them ?

Just the word ‘variant’ is the criteria.

Is there anything to stop someone getting a train or connecting flight to a non MHQ country and then flying on to Dublin ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭Ray Donovan

    Travel abroad
You must only travel abroad if it is essential to do so. The permitted reasons for travelling abroad are set out in Statutory Instrument 29 of 2021 (pdf).

You can receive a fixed payment notice for €2,000 for unnecessary travel abroad or be at risk of court prosecution.

Must literally have been updated yesterday as I checked the site and it was still €500 at the time.

Do you have any source for this? It is still €500 on the citizens information website.

Nothing to stop you doing that at all. It is a massive loophole.

A train in theory is no different to us going to Belfast. So a French person wants to avoid MHQ so gets a train from France to, say, Luxembourg then on to Ireland with no MHQ? Only way they can stop that is banning all French passport holders irregardless of origin country? (Maybe that'll be their next brain wave?! )

On the connecting flight not sure, would your passport/other electronic data flag you had made a connecting flight and detail your country of origin ?

I think it's determined by Stephen Donnelly throwing darts at a map while blindfolded.

No, however outside the EU there may be an stamp in your passport showing you were in a MHQ country in the last 14 days. Plus you would need a PCR test from the non-MHQ country, otherwise the document stating the negative result would indicate you were in the MHQ country within the last 72 hours.

They are not allowed to do that. In EU, you cannot discriminate when closing your borders. If you close your borders because of an health emergency, then it has to apply to everyone crossing your border, irish and other passport holders.

Germany tried to build a system where german residents could come back to Germany with less restrictions than foreigners, and the European Comission came to them to stop this system as it is illegal.

Nope. They cannot see your travel history.

To save €2,000 or more if you are a family i'd travel for a few days to another country with less restrictions, do the pcr test there and then onto Dublin. Even if the middle country has stay at home quarantine I'd rent a nice Air B'nB and make a holiday out of it.

I didnt think he was allowed to have sharp objects - either way he must have a really **** aim - hitting those tiny islands in the Pacific and Caribbean when he was aiming for the US and EU.

Then how is Donnelly going to implement his EU country additions without incurring the EU commission stopping him ?

Because the idiot is on a solo run. He either knows hes on the way out and is trying to leave a legacy or else hes just completely and utterly the most stupid person in government.

    I think its the latter.

Austria is already on it. Germany closed the border to Austria. Germany also closed border with France.

    They are all at it.

According to virgin media news earlier eamon Ryan and mehole have backed this clown Donnelly with his EU country crackpot idea.

I hope FG grow a pair and start throwing punches before this crowd of loonies totally destroy our economic and tourist (and aviation) industries.

    It’s like a bad dream
Where / when the f@%k is this going to end ??

    Yeah true
    But
Germany will remove Austria in weeks , our crowd will leave EU countries on the mhq for months if not years . Schhhh “variants”

I hope FG pull out of the coalition and end this fiasco. Polls are showing the people are loosing confidence in this government. Whatever about any politician doing the "right" thing - they`ll always act when the polls show their popularity declining.

But the borders are not closed.
you need a negative test to cross the land borders now, causes delay of around 6 hours though.

Because the criteria is going to be "by origin country"on the hypothesis that this country is a threat for Irelans. As long as everybody coming from the same country are treated equally, they are covered by the emergency blanket.

If you and I go to France together for a week and come back, they can't let you in with no restrictions and lock me in an hotel because I have a French passport. Which is fair enough, because the risk is not associated to our nationality.

    Especially Twitter fan boy Leo.

At this point I gotta say the likelihood of a government collapse is close.
I placed a small bet with the lads on Easter Sunday after the Dubai 2 had their legal issue with mhq.

All was / is not quite on the western front.

Simon coveney and Donnelly at obvious logger heads over EU additions.
FG Regina Doherty and some FF goon on RTÉ one radio yesterday arguing about mhq.

Biggest problem though is who to vote for in the event of a GE occurring considering the puppet mob in opposition.
