We have multiple vaccines now and there’s still no plan for going back to normal.. only more doom and gloom from the govt and the loopers in NPHET. The goalposts just keep getting moved again and again.

At what point, hypothetically, do we get to before the lockdown starts to do more damage than the Covid itself? Because I think we are well beyond the point of no return in that regard.

So you're saying were never going back to normal?

The only thing I see getting moved is the distance between reality and fantasy. And yes its probably true that Covid will hang around for a while. Currently we are still in the midst of the biggest vaccination programme in the history of the state. Until that's completed - I don't expect that everything is going to be rosey either tomorrow or even the day after that.

Long term covid will managed much the same way as any other reoccurring infectious disease

And remember the issues are not just Ireland. If there's an outbreak of a nasty strain of covid in Playa del Tontos in a couple of years - then the likleyhood is that it just might impact your annual dose of sea and sangria until an adapted vaccine is available.

Though you just may be lucky and decide to holiday somewhere else....

The average age of death from covid is 83. Average life expectancy about 83. And as others have pointed out , it's not a guaranteed 83 it's the age you get on average if other things dont kill you first.Having "10 years stolen" is not correct.
Sorry to quote you Fintan, I have the lad you quoted on my ignore list so cant quote him (but unfortunately have to see his posts when others do)

Well M_Murphy. I'll add you to mine as well. But
firstly not everyone who dies from covid is 83 years of age.

Secondly " the 10 years" is an average figure. The study provides further detail.

Thirdly the study was based on actual people who died. As patiently explained- those having already having died of covid - kinda precludes them from dying of anything else.
With 146,000 deaths due to COVID-19 in the UK, up to 1.5 million potential years of life have been lost, with those who died losing up to 10 years of life on average. Almost three quarters of those who died were aged over 75, with people in this age group losing an average 6.5 years of life.

If you're arguing that if people have survived covid - they could have got hit by a bus and its therefore irrelevant - then thats certainly enters into the realms of speculation or similar

utter shambles, follow the science, but only the science that continues to enable us to lock everyone down :(

Absolute jokers, we should be well on the way to opening most outdoor activities by now instead of gingerly dipping our toe in the water next month.

Article says for over 75s, 6.5 average number of years lost due to Covid positive death, and for 2018 flu season 5.75 average years of life lost due to death from flu or pneumonia.

Mishmash of stats in that article.

You've completely misunderstood what life expectancy means. If you are born now, life expectancy is 83. If you are 83 now, you should expect to live for another 'x' number of years.

That analogy doesn't work. It's been tried a few times on this thread. Roads have improved and vehicle safety systems have been improved over the years. They'll continue to be improved. Will it stop all road deaths? No. The mitigation measures are there though.

    Exactly.

If you are 83 now it’s important to remember nobody dies at 84 or 85

    It’s science guys

Yes and it's also not a guarantee you'll die at or before 83 either, roughly half will live beyond 83. The other will die before 83, as you say, if other things get them first. That's why the average is 83, because many die before 83, and many die after 83.

For example, in USA life expectancy is 79. 79 years ago was 1941. 61% of Americans born in 1941 are still alive today, even though 'life expectancy' expects them to be dead today on average..Even though a majority are still alive.
    https://247wallst.com/special-report/2018/06/08/how-many-people-are-left-from-the-year-you-were-born-3/2/
COVID is estimated to have caused a 1 year reduction in life expectancy nationally in the USA in 2020. Most estimates put infection rates in the population at roughly 1 /3rd of the national population. So if everyone in USA had gotten COVID, you'd expect a 3 year dip in life expectancy.
So, COVID would on average take about 3 years of life from each victim, I think. Not completely sure if it's as simple as that, somebody tell me if it is wrong. But sounds about right considering the age of the victims, and impact on excess deaths.

Is that what I said? No. It's not. You're great at misrepresentation.

I don't imagine the European tourists would appreciate being accosted by some swivel eyed loon pointing their phone at them demanding to know why they're doing here and if they know there's a pandemic on
