My dad was gone to bed early so he's missing out, but I'm sharing a drop of this with my mother (now to be known as Nana!) tonight. It is spectacular.

    Congratulations!

So tonight, I'll be on the Irish coffees. Now, if we use Powers as the quintessential Irish coffee baseline whiskey, what should I use of the following for a bit of a change up:

Powers Gold- the OG as far as I'm concerned for the job at hand.

RB12- have the end of a bottle there that I'm willing to use, but unsure of what it will be like when lathered with cream and sugar.

Púca- haven't opened my bottle yet and haven't tasted it at all so unsure of what to expect.

Roe+Co- think it could do a job but again haven't before, but I reckon it could work.

Jameson Black Barrel- I think this is gonna be a winner.

Also open on the shelf is some Ratheadon 1.2, Bowmore 12, Talisker 10 and Lot 40 Canadian Rye, but I think they'll be a stretch.

Anyway, any opinions on my 'predicament' are of course welcome.

Had more Weisenhoer Pils than I had intended earlier today so I only managed the first coffee now and I have to say, Black Barrel suits it down to the ground.

    Absolutely gorgeous.

How did you make yours? I could be tempted to try something similar tomorrow evening.

I'm an eyeballer when it comes to recipes. Try around 3 parts coffee to whiskey. That's the height of it really.

As I had leftover coffee from earlier and then topped up with some fresh brew I ended up with just over 250ml of coffee to 80ml Whiskey. I like mine with a bit of bite though. 1-1.5tsp of brown sugar of taste.

Mix all that in a jug and then fill the cup with that and water down as required if using espresso strength joe, then top with squeezy cream because I can be ****ed whipping stuff at this hour.

I would ordinarily make it per cup, but I have found the jug method better when you plan on having a more than a couple.

That said, it also helps if you're using nice coffee from Art of Coffee in Carrick. Their Nina blend in this case.

Cracked open the Ardbeg 10 (after a spicy dinner), it's not bad at all.

Less immediately overpowering than Laphroaig, it even looks a bit watery (I deviated from the usual icecubes) but it has that oily mouthfeel with long afternotes of coffee and oak. Plenty more sipping to be done before the final verdict.

Had some of Aldi’s Highland Black 8yo last night. Altogether it’s thin with an agreeable sweetness without being in any way remarkable..

It is as good as any other lower shelf Scotch blend. It cost me €19. That makes it cheaper than JW Red, JW Black, Famous Grouse, Grant’s Family Reserve, Teachers Highland Cream, and Black & White. In my opinion it is slightly better than all those listed, but I'm not going to replace the bottle.

Thats natural colour, unlike the Laphroaig which has colouring added to give it a richer more aged look. Another reason why I love ardbeg.

I also have a little drop of honey poitín in store ;)

What's the honey poitin like, and how's it made?

Half way through the Writers Tears Red Head and I realise I don’t like it as much as the standard Tears.

So I opened a bottle of Three Swallow and it really is my thing.

How would you rank it to the 12?

So I am far from a whiskey expert, I really like whiskey and drink it a lot but don't really go for the more technical details on it.

I would say the 12 is very nice indeed and the 15 is a very noticeable step up on it. But then the price steps up too.

That's absolutely fine. I'm very much a novice myself. Like you, I just enjoy drinking whiskey without knowing a whole lot about it.

Bought a bottle of 12 last week in favour of the 15 so was wondering.

Sounds like it would be worth getting a bottle anyway. Thanks.

I would say the 12 I would happily buy regularly and drink fairly regularly.

The 15 if I bought a bottle would be kept for more special occasions.

I was drinking whiskey for more than 30 years before I tasted the Redbreast 15. Relax. Taste a lot of whiskey. Then try it.

Yes, I'm drinking a drop of 12 now as it happens but that's what I was thinking about the 15. Have it on the shelf for an occasion.

That's fair, and I get it. But i have a problem that when I get something in my head, I have to have it :pac:

I have the 12yo, 15yo & 12yo cask strength all open, I pick and choose depending on my mood
The cask strength is probably the best to my mind, but the 15yo is very smooth & a beautiful drop

I'll definitely have to build up to the CS. While I have a bottle of Aberlour Abundah and have enjoyed a small drop a couple of times, I havent enjoyed CS in general. They're a bit too strong for me at the moment. Whereas the Aberlour is quite sweet despite the high %

CS is the next on my list. Have 50ml of it in the cupboard looking at me.

    Maybe tomorrow...

Last day of the O’Briens sale. Thinking of getting Ratheadon 1.2 for €65. Worth it?

It’s not a huge saving on that one, but it’s a lovely drop.

I got the kilbeggan single pot still in the sale myself.

Was talking to a neighbour a few days ago, and he mentioned he is in the Aviators Whiskey Club (Originally set up by people in Dublin airport).

I had a look online and it seems they do distillery visits, tastings etc. He was saying it worked out at very good value to join.

Is anyone a member, any thoughts? Do you pay your membership and then a price for the tastings, is there much of a saving compared to L Mulligan or CWS ones?

    I hadn't heard of it.
It looks similar to the Irish Whiskey Society.

What the hell does Single Grain AND Single Malt mean? I’ve never seen that before.
