Yeah MM in particular knows he ain't surviving the next election, but what does he care? He's secure, his gold-plated pension is sorted, same for every other government minister and those advisors in NPHET too. While the rest of us - many of us working in industries that have been utterly ravaged by the State's Covid response - will be left to foot the bill.

I can't help but think we're going to see another generation of young people in Oz and it really depresses me :(

Difficult situation. It's likely once the SA variant takes hold in the country later in the year (unavoidable really) we'll be back to full lockdown again. The vaccines don't work against that variant so next winter will be just like this winter as they will have to start the vaccination program again almost from scratch.

The opportunity to reopen the economy, at least a little bit and for a while is this summer. Let people have a bit of a worthwhile staycation, see their family across the country, let fully vaccinated British tourists in to boost the economy for a few months, because if they don't do that this summer, that will be their only opportunity gone until at least this time next year, because next winter will be bleak again with the lockdowns.

Go home george lee you're drunk

Ridiculous scaremongering and there is no need for it.

No, just the reality of the situation. The SA variant is already widely spreading in France. The UK scientists have already publicly accepted that they can only delay its arrival, they can't keep it out forever. Once it's in the UK it will be in NI and then here. The current vaccines are only 10% to 30% effective against it, not near enough to counter it.

But it's not here yet and there's still a chance to save the summer before it arrives.

Where the hell is all this outrage coming from ? I thought people would be happy and saying fair dues to M Martin for delivering. All we have had here for the last weeks is people banging on about having a plan. If only we could have a plan. Something that would give us some hope. Give some visibility on where we are going over the next few months. Other countries have layed out the roll back of restrictions. Etc. Etc. Etc. Ad nauseam.
We just got a plan. And its the same endless moaning. So you didnt actually want a plan all along is it ?

Its no a plan. Its a vague statement of what might happen past April.

The UK has a plan. A plan with actual dates for things to reopen.

That was not a plan it's a desperation move as they are about to be hit with a wave of civil disobedience so they have to pretend to have allowed it, also there's nothing in there about what happens when we get to x vaccines or have less than x daily infections.

Also wheres the info for those who are vaccinated and want to meet up, which by the end of April should be a significant number?

They have nothing ready and are flying by the seat of their pants reacting to everything and doing nothing proactive whatsoever.

Maybe because its only a small minority who feel like you? I dunno, have you been on many yourself?

What like the "small minority" of people who voted for Sinn Fein in the last election?

How do they plan on coping with the civil unrest that will occur in Europe with another round of lockdowns after the summer and possibly into 2022?

They would be playing a dangerous game. Social cohesion is important. When you lose cohesion, you lose society.

10-30% efficacy at what? Preventing infection or serious illness?

If what you’re saying is true then how do we “save the summer?”

At some point we have to accept that this is a highly contagious airborne virus that we can’t just “hold back” with filthy nylon masks and hugely damaging lockdowns that many people are just ignoring at this stage.

This is basically the UK governments new approach from today. The new slogan is "Hands, face, space, fresh air". We're being encouraged to stay outside as much as possible, which is ironic considering we were told to stay inside for a year and they made it a criminal offence to be outside. But atleast theres some sort of attempt to move past this rather than somehow still arguing whether people should be allowed 5k from their house or not a year into this. You know things are bad when FF/FG make the Tories look competent.

Jesus. They didn't make it a criminal offense to be outside.

Hard to know, it's a very difficult situation. More "one more big push" statements or similar maybe? I get the sense that the anger levels are higher in Ireland than elsewhere for some reason, possibly because the EU vaccine failure is so visible to us with our proximity to the UK.

The good news is that historically most pandemics become less potent after two years or so, and the more advanced vaccine technologies on vaccines should allow us to get ahead of the virus at that stage. But I do think people need to be more realistic about next winter, it's going to be very tough again.

The virus is constantly mutating. Will we ever hear the announcement that current vaccines need to be drastically adjusted to suit and those already vaccinated are no longer protected meaning the whole process has to start again from 0.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility. There are now on top of the well known varieties also a California variant, a New York varient.

The Pfizer vaccine is 2 thirds less effective on the B1351 variant.
Moderna 6.4 fold less effective on same
    Johnson and Johnson:
66 percent effective in South America, where the P.1 variant is circulating
57 percent effective in South Africa, where the B.1.351 variant is circulating

Astra zenica is only 10% effective against b1351
This is the South Africa variant. 15 cases so far found in Ireland

A Nigerian variant has also been found in Ireland.

A brand new "double mutant " variant has been discovered in India

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-56507988

Another even more severe variant has also been discovered in Tanzania

How to we save the summer? We open up the economy a bit while the infection rates are low and the most vulnerable are vaccinated. Not totally, but enough for people to have some decent leisure time this summer before any new variants take hold. Because I don't think people can take the current situation continuing as is for another 12 to 15 months without getting a break at some point.

Anger levels are higher in Ireland because we have been the EUs most suppressed nation for 54 weeks now.

The greatest illusion RTE and the Irish media ever created was that Ireland was just like the rest of Europe

The rest of Europe finished its lockdown in May 2020

Ireland had lockdown 2 and 3 since

But it states in that article that there was no cases of hospitalisation or deaths in the study.

So is the vaccine really 10% efficacious? I would give it a 100% efficacy score there.

We’re looking at not opening up inter country travel before July. No sign of non essential retail or even click and collect opening not to mention hospitality.

So I think saving the summer isn’t really on the table at the moment.

It will be billed as a "booster shot" I'd expect. To make it feel like it's not starting from scratch. And to some extent it won't be starting from scratch as the current vaccines will continue to protect against the current variants. But at least one further shot will be needed to deal with variants in the short term (longer term continued vaccinations will also be needed, but hopefully we will have moved ahead of the virus at that stage and can move on with our lives).

So currently a person can exercise with another household but from mid April people can meet outdoors but not in our gardens. What has changed?

Not like 2 households can meet up and sit down for a coffee at a coffee shop. Unless they fine a wall to sit on.

The current vaccines were designed to protect against the "original " covid 19 variant. A small bit of hope was there that the vaccines would also work effectively against the at thebtime new strains. Some do very well. Others dont.
For example the astra zenica vaccine is 10% effective against the south African variant.
If that variant became dominant then those vaccinated with astra zenica will be essentially back to square one.

New variants are being discovered with more frequency.
