Picked up a €60 Redbreast 12 in O Briens, missed it last time it was that price so happy to get it this time. Will have a few sips later on

Tommy Tiernan fell down his stairs and hurt himself the other day. His anecdote reminded me of myself and a few others on this thread.

I was wearing socks and carrying whiskey, and I had a book in me hand, a book about God. And I was gone, I went all the way down from the second step. I was delivered then out onto the floor, helpless like a baba, roaring.”

He said he hurt his leg “all the way from the kneecap up to the top of my thigh. I broke nothing but muscle has come off bone or tendons are stretched, something like that. The ribs are done in as well. The ribs weren’t from being hit, the ribs were from some weird stretch that I did in the fall.

He joked: “As I was falling I was just focused entirely on the whiskey.”

I love their podcast. Funnily enough, when I heard him telling the story, my first thought was “I wonder what whiskey he was drinking”.

Second thought was “I wonder did he spill much”

Third thought was “I hope he wasn’t too badly hurt”.

    It’s all about priorities!

Update on the the Starward Australian whiskey for anybody who’s interested... I’ve had a few more glasses (actually most of the bottle at this stage). It’s quite drinkable with ice. I wouldn’t rush out to buy it again, but it has definitely grown on me over time.

Out there somewhere the Kilbeggan Single Grain NAS screams... One day, one day...

Just picked up a Púca there in Aldi Ballyfermot. Two left behind me.

Is that the 8 year old Kilbeggan from Aldi you're talking about?

No, the current NAS that replaced the 8yo. I keep going on about buying a bottle almost every week and inevitably pick up something else.

    Waterford Ballycilcavan 1.1 tonight.

I wasn’t sure I would enjoy, but I readily did! It’s young stuff, and it has strong new make flavours to it. But I love a lot about this... even the choice for 50% abv is up my street.

I could see myself buying a bottle of Waterford.

Nice present! My favourite whiskey. Had a glass this evening. I’ve less than half a bottle left, so need to get another one soon

    Enjoy!

    Tonight's little mix

Powers 3 swallows: Good drop for the 30 paid. Nothing mind blowing but at this kind of price very good to say the least. Really is good, maybe my powers dislike has me twisted a bit

Writers Tears Mizurno cask: Interesting tipple, not very smooth, complexity, smoothness to taste not as good as I'd hoped after reading some reviews.

Writers Tears XO Cognac cask finish: well this is a very nice drop, typing as I drink. Lovely on the nose, very smooth with a bit of the writers tears after taste. All in all a very nice drop

If I had to pick price excluded powers 3 swallows wins this one.

I know when Jameson Crested, Black Barrel and Caskmates come up on offer in Tesco for €25-€30 they are snapped up.

I never hear much about the more expensive Blender's Dog, Distiller's Safe, sale price €55!

Anyone tried them? How do they compare?

I got a 50ml taster of Glen Scotia Victoriana 54.2% from a friend a while back, just opened it up now

Very pleasant on the nose anyway, I'm going to let it breathe a bit then sip some, and then maybe add some water.

Having a drop of green spot Leoville Barton tonight.Enjoying it more than the Chateau Montelena.

Probably 'cos the Montelena was being consumed while watching Munster's loss.Down with that sort of thing.

Last night, while watching Line of Duty, had my 50ml of the Drumshambo single pot still inaugural release.

I had read reviews that the nose was a bit 'off', and there were strong vegetal notes. I would be inclined to agree with that but what comes through in tasting is the sherry cask finish, which I really didn't expect.

There was also a creamy mouthfeel that I liked, maybe down to the unmalted barley and oats, as the marketing suggests, but I don't know.

I've had a bottle of Powers Gold Label in the cabinet for yonks. I've only ever used it in cocktails. I drank it straight with ice last night for the first time and really enjoyed it. I think I was expecting to be harsh, but it was actually quite smooth. I'd happily have it as a regular tipple.

I bet I'd be rubbish at blind tasting, but after "exhaustive":D testing / sampling during lockdown over the past year, I've come to the conclusion that paying more for a whiskey doesn't always mean I'll prefer it to a less expensive one.

I think I'll stock up on a few more of the standard Jameson, Powers, Paddy and Bushmills. Be interesting to see how they compare to the more expensive bottles.

Mate of mine dropped me over a sample of The Liberator Double Port - intense dark fruit flavour, fantastic stuff.

Powers has the highest pot still content of all the bottom shelf Irish, and is apparently the most expensive to make. I think you’ll be disappointed with the others, especially the Paddy and Bush White. I love a drop of Powers myself.

Powers Gold Label is grand to drink neat, as is Jameson, although of the two it's Powers all the way for me. It's funny in some ways that we've been marketed to believe that whiskies like this are only suitable for mixing, not true.

Personal view, I think Gold Label is as good as Three Swallows for far less.

Now, the discontinued Powers 12 year old special reserve... That was a step up.

Definitely.... and it makes perfect business sense for the likes of Irish Distillers to adopt that strategy in order to convince customers to part with more cash for their more expensive brands.

New 50ml sample service launching Wednesday. Whiskey, Rum, Cognac, Gin etc. Called Tiny Tipple and based in Ireland. Fella behind it is sound and should have some decent spirits. Will update when it's live.

I love Powers Gold Label, and use it both for mixing and for an everyday sipper, neat.

It's by far and away the best of the entry level Irish whiskeys, and at the price it can be got at when on special in the multiples there's no reason everyone shouldn't have a bottle in the house.

I have a bottle of Three Swallows here too, and consider it superior, but I prefer Gold Label to Johns Lane.

Some good bargains in the O'Briens whiskey sale

    Green Spot €50
    Irishman Founder's Reserve €30
    Jameson Caskmates €28
    Black Bush €25

    Lots of others

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Does anyone else think the flavour of Power's in the new design bottle (with the orange label) isn't the same?

Or have I just been spoilt by drinking John's Lane?

I'd been waiting to see if anyone else thought the same. I even did side by sides and find there's a very noticeable difference.

Did you pick up a bottle of the "Old Fashioned Mix" which an orange label?

Gold Label is Red and White.

Rust coloured I would call it. I haven't tried the mixed version.
