Instead they enforced a never ending lockdown on its citizens . The harshest restrictions in the world .

What country did Ireland beat into second place, and by how much on the harshnessometer ?

P.S if we are this slow getting the first batch of vaccines out why do we think we'll be quicker with the 2.0 version.

Not all vaccines have been approved yet. Various productions issues will be worked out etc over time. It takes time to ramp up production, once they do that, they can just keep churning out vaccines.

Genuine answer. The variants that are emerging have been able to evade immunity. The fact they are more adept at bridging the species barrier would say to me that it has a lot more space to evolve and incubate.

People saying that there is no evidence that AZ doesn't prevent (double negative) severe disease are right but the trial that showed it didn't work against S.A variant showed no difference in vaccinated vs unvaccinated and young people don't generally get hospitalised.

Thanks for asking and hope that helps. Apologies for the downbeat forecast but what do I know. Feel free to disregard.

    Indefinite lockdown!

We have done nothing but go along with their restrictions for as long as humanly tolerable, and now you feel berating the population is the right move here? We have done excellently as a population but you cannot sit there with a straight face and expect indefinite compliance with restrictions that have no end in sight.

People have literally lost their minds.

Looks like you are berating him not the other way round ;)

Production scale up takes time and is there from Q2. Version 2.0 will essentially be the same vaccine with tweaks which won’t require new capacity.

My father has had 2 appointments for a knee replacement cancelled because of hospitals being stressed. Then they won't reschedule them because he is vulnerable so they don't want to being him into hospital.

Sorry to hear of your recent hassles

I thought they've said hospitals are safe though?

Is it 5.1km either by walking or car ?

It's likely less if you could go directly there or as the crow flies. That's how I'm interpreting it anyway. There a walk in the mountains I go on close to me ,to get there it is further than 5km travelled but it's less than 5km in distance.

    I wouldn't be fretting over a 100m either way.

Common sense dictates it's as the crow flies ...within X km of where you live.
Some would otherwise use up distance on one way systems ,detours etc.

The mass acceptance of mediocrity from the Government says a lot about how they've managed to make a balls of things repeatedly & have stayed in power. It's always someone else's fault.

The Government have pushed the lockdown button too frequently, losing public buy-in. That is apparently the public's fault for not holding firm a little while longer.

The Government failed to address ICU capacity throughout the last 12 months, again, this just means we need to hold firm longer than every other country.

The Government have failed to communicate clearly and do everything at a snails pace, again, this is the populations fault somehow.

How people are quite happy and accepting of this perpetual bull**** is staggering.

Your posts are hilarious really , so full of hyperbole and generalisations , so thanked by all the usual antieverything posters .
Everybody on this thread is sick of restrictions at this stage , but just because people feel the need to abide by them for various reasons which you do not know, doesn't mean you can say that anyone is accepting of any government "bullxxxx" !
How do you know what others here are doing behind the scenes ?
Some may be emailing their government representatives, or maybe in unions lobbying strongly for change .
    What are you doing ?

Don't be so quick to attack and generalise please .

Fair enough. I can see the logic in your thought process all right but I don't think it shows anything beyond the fact these variants can jump the species barrier for now. No point in getting carried away and coming to conclusions beyond the scope of a study - whether it's positive or negative.

No worries. There's a bit more to the logic also. If can bind to other receptors in mice then it may be able to bind to other receptors in humans. By extension current vaccines may not work.

Apologies the parrot term was unnecessary.

It frustrates me to see people blame their fellow citizens for this.

It’s an implication that the deaths can be blamed on us, and it’s an implication used to mask failures to protect vulnerable by those in authority

Well it frustrates me when I hear that 'the people' are not culpable in the matter of spreading the virus. Logically -where else can cases come from ?

Did I dream the bit about student gatherings , house parties , shebeens, weddings , funerals etc -or were they media fabrications ?

Thanks raind. I have you on block but I love to guess your response before I click reveal. :pac:

With this one I guessed "it'll be grand" which I think is a fair paraphrase to your response.

Apologies if I'm sceptical but lets hope so.

With the increasing number of protests against restrictions being seen right across the EU, how long will it be before businesses just decide to open back up and deal with consequences?

I mean they can't shut everyone down if a large number were to decide to open all at once.

As tough as it is dealing with all of this, those who are suffering financially must be incredibly frustrated with no end in sight.

A number of businesses have already opened back up. The nonessential retail business next to my "essential" workplace has been open for weeks, you simply have to ring the store to make an appointment to be snuck in the back door and allowed go shopping.

Many other places are open in a similar fashion. I could get people out to my house tomorrow to do my brows, nails, hair, tan, lashes etc if I chose (I haven't, I used my first box dye in a decade to try fix my roots).

People will find ways around the forced closures.

    Great post, Diamonds .

I think fear of Covid and fear of dying is not totally irrational though .
It depends on each individual and their risk factors and level of tolerance for stress .

I am normally the calmest, chatty laid back person, sleep like a log , can nap at the drop of a hat .
I was afraid for much of last year that I would get it at work and die , and had to try to rationalise that fear before I went back in for a stint after a few days off .
But that fear was based on the reality I was facing , as an older nurse working with very sick Covid patients and with two underlying , at risk conditions and seeing how bad this was/ is for people like me.
I couldn't sleep through the night for months and was angry and exhausted .
I was fighting with everyone at home , at work and here as some can testify :)
In fairness also , my husband had major surgery for cancer and my son was very sick earlier so it was a bad year all round
The science was the only thing I felt helped me control the anxiety so I could function knowing that if I did x,y and z I would be ok .
    And venting here !
And then the vaccines came .
Now next step is my husbands vaccination and my children's .

I can't move beyond that yet but I can sleep now .
I know where my next point on my personal map is .

People need a plan/ map out of this , whether it is couched in language like depending on case numbers ,vaccinations or hospitalisations .
    Our government are to blame.
They should be proactively getting that message out there , and at the risk of upsetting Arghus , because I know Boris is a twat, but they need to be like Boris with that message which is a relief to so many people over in the UK ,whether they get to follow it to the letter or not
We need that . Now .

Oh it definitely isn't such an irrational fear. Statistics are in that person's favour, but still. We can be careful and manage the risk but to hide away and not actually be ok with doing so is sad. That individual aside I have a lot of compassion for anyone who is scared right now. I know a thing or two about fear and it can cripple you.

The rest of your post Golden really shows me how nobody knows the person behind the keyboard. That's obvious but you know we get all annoyed and make assumptions and that. I hope your husband and children's vaccinations come soon :)

Won't matter either way, there will be still restrictions and a decreasing number of people following them.

5, 50, 500 - doesn't seem to matter when there's no actual goal in sight. Even if there was a goal, like living with Covid (remember that plan!) they can change things at a moments notice.

When do you think this will end? I think it will end when society accepts the risks and carries on regardless, we're closer to that than any vaccine 'saving us'.

In every post you say this, thatnoone is following restrictions .

Tell me if that is the case , why are we all so damn sick of those same restrictions?
