So the Brits left Europe, left a bad smell all over Europe (the variant) and then managed to get a good chunk or vaccines out of Europe.

Suggest you read up on how the UK detected the variant and the level of testing they conducted to spot it.
Come back to us when you can show comparable testing across Europe.

No, the UK left the European Union.

The UK variant is no more English than the original virus has a Chinese nationality. These are needlessly racially charged comments, regardless of the country in question. For instance, there is no reason not to assume that the so-called Kent variant was seeded by a traveler from Greece.

No, the UK didn't get a "good chunk of vaccines out of Europe", they organized contracts far earlier - and got those vaccines delivered. Arguing that the UK is trying to get vaccines out of the European Union is laughable; the EU, through its jungle of bureaucracy, simply could not organize it.

In contrast, the EU failed spectacularly on the vaccine question - and looks to blame the UK in some kind of petulant outburst, unwilling to admit their outstanding failures.

COVID recoveries will reach over 100 million in the coming week, if WHO estimates of a few months ago are still accurate, it could be well over a billion people recovered from COVID by next week . It's so mad to think that just over the last year, despite all the global efforts to contain it, that 1 in 7 people everywhere on earth could have had COVID by now!

I think you are either using the wrong value for a billion or grossly overestimating the number of unrecorded cases. It's more like 1 in 70.

What is the story with all the virologists around the world that say Covid doesn't exist?

They signed their AZ contract the day after the EU did, and yet ...

Yes, I've been a big believer in Maths in all of this from the start

And it doesn't add up at all that 1 in 7 worldwide have had it

I dont think he is estimating but going with the WHO estimate of factor 10.

I don't believe it's that high. Especially as nearly a dozen countries would have had herd immunity by now!

are we expecting a massive increase of vaccines with J&J and sputnik? cause without something drastic we are looking at lockdowns for the next year at least at this rate of vaccinations.

In that case 300 million of the 320 million in the USA have had it - wonder why they're vaccinating so.

Surely, there are antibody tests that can be broadly performed and compared with reported cases to come up with a reasonably accurate figure?

I'm sure they have. I'm replying to an assertion that 1 in 7 worldwide have had Covid.

Wouldn't be surprised if the turn to Sputnik 5, with or without EMA approval.

    I laid out this hypothetical in the AZ thread;
Let's say AZ doesn't come back into our roll-out at all

By May, can we still expect at least 100,000 people getting a jab? Surely with J&J coming this is the minimum we should be putting into arms weekly by then?

    That's 400,000 a month and 1.6 Million in 4 months

Last I checked, at least 500,000 have been vaccinated

So - very worst case scenario - I have that as (at the very least) 2.1 Million Irish people with at least one jab by September 1st

All of these metrics are with the lowest expectations possible. I think/hope we'll be at 3 Million with at least one jab by then

That leaves 1.9 Million people, of which ??? are under 18 and/or pregnant women?

    Long story short:

An array of things need to go balls up for us not to have 2 Million with at least one jab by September 1st*

And I think/hope it could be closer to 3 Million

(*Based on the EU's shocking performance so far, that's entirely possible too)

you would fear for the stability of the EU after this.

    Ivor the engineer tweeted today:

"Zero people died with positive Pcr today - out of FIVE MILLION people in the country. But the CCP-Lockdown ransacking and wanton destruction of our society continues."

While I do think that the lockdown is too strict, he seems to think that because there are no deaths today, there's no reason for lockdown. Simplistic. Seems to be anti mask and anti vaccine too.

He retweeted below too - that majority of covid deaths in Ireland are in the last 2 months. Does seem stark.

    Absolute Conspiratorial nonsense

We had our late December/early January surge because:
    • The Kent variant
    • Christmas
    • Martin and Leo said we "deserved" a Christmas
    • Open airports at Christmas and thousands arriving from the UK

    And more

It had absolutely fcuk all to do with vaccines

So what are you and he insinuating, that the vaccine is actually causing most of these deaths?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,232 ✭✭✭prunudo

There were no 'reported' deaths on the island today. Given that they have 3 months to record a death, we will never know for sure whether there actually were deaths or not.
Don't get me wrong, its still good news and it continues to go the right direction but lets not get carried away with it meaning everything is hunky dory.

    So do we think:

    1) the UK is covering up problems with AZ, given that they have the most data of anyone on possible side effects.
    Or
    2) Europe is being overly cautious with respect to a small correlation, to the detriment of those who might get sick and die who might otherwise have been vaccinated (and possibly politics coming into it as well, as countries feel they can’t press on when their peers have paused)

It has to be one or the other. My bet is on the 2nd.

I'm no expert but surely any idiot could figure the large number of deaths were down to the daily multiple thousand cases being recorded from Jan through Feb.......we 're back now with roughly the same numbers for the whole of last year (apart from mid Summer when there were daily single digit cases)

Ah I wouldn't go so far as to say politics are coming into play.
Overly cautious maybe, but we're starting to vaccinate the high risk underline conditions cohort with AZ, so maybe it makes sense to pause briefly to see.
Last think you want is medically vulnerable people prone to clotting getting a vaccine which may or may not increase that risk.

And they did not tell people about it for weeks and they have had one of the highest death rates worldwide.
