Crookhaven the Charleville takes 3 hours and you haven't even left Cork!

I had a car like that once.

3 hours will get you from Dundalk to Charleville.

    County restrictions favour large counties.

They do Jim. They'd be unfair. As are the current restrictions to certain areas.

Those poor divils in Carlow would be driving around in circles while those in Cork could go on holiday to the furthest point away

Kildare and Meath featuring in the top counties for daily cases again.

Questions need to be asked at the next press conference regarding outbreaks in these counties. Something is clearly happening
I’m pretty sure Kildare has been one of the highest in terms of numbers throughout the pandemic. It has one of the highest populations in the country and half its workforce works in Dublin. So if Dublin is high, Kildare/Meath will most likely be high too.

Kildare last four days 232 cases, previous 4 days they had 94 cases.

Well UK gov really ****ed themselves over with the aggressive treatment of peaceful protestors at the vigil, probably populated by some of the most ardent supporters of lockdowns. Say it'll cause a turn in the tide there. I'm in favour of anyone being allowed to protest peacefully but we all know how some kind of anti lockdown protest would have been dealt with by the Met in UK, so at least there aren't glaring double standards being allowed, which wouldn't have been surprising though.

Would be interesting to see how similar protest would have gone down here, would we have gardai turning young women around at checkpoints to go home as happened in Cork and Dublin a few weeks ago, hard to call. BLM was allowed slide here and in UKbut the low cases across Europe meant an exception was made in that case, maybe not the same at the moment.

What case numbers do you have for 2nd of March?

It was reported as 359 but 369 is on Covid-19 geohive site.

The situation appears pretty grim now in mainland Europe. Could be quite bad in a few weeks.

Exponential growth is mitigated against via Lv. 3 restrictions / social distancing and the rest - as it was proven to be in October; and as it proved to be in many European countries over the past year. Yes, at some points, additional more severe measures are needed. But not to the extent that Ireland has imposed over the past year.

I'd never argue for some free for all.

The issue now is, at level 5* restrictions our r rate now appears to be approaching 1. The next week or so will see if that is the case. We release the valve and the r rate goes over 1, as happened at Christmas. We have so little margin for error. If there was 100% compliance with hand cleaning, distancing, mask wearing, this might keep us at or below 1, but to be honest with an Airborne virus that has mutated to become more transmissible I have my doubts. Certainly for activities like indoor dining, I don't see any scope for that right now.

Part of the problem is everything has just gotten lax, 20% of people still don't wear a mask properly, lots of shops aren't limiting numbers, people are no longer keeping their distance, businesses have stopped keeping the sanitizer full, too many workplaces have people in that could be at home. The good sensible measures are dying by a thousand cuts.

I'm hoping the changing seasons will somehow ease the r rate naturally like it appeared to do last year but that's probably wishful thinking on my part.

Seems to be another wave, Italy going back to a more severe Easter lockdown etc

Italy and France look like they are heading fo a lockdown. ICU nearly full and they had about 30,00 cases today

Is this going to make out Government even more cautious reopening?
I've a feeling as we're weeks behind vaccinations compared to the UK, they will wait and see how the UK numbers look after opening back up.
We've been matching there curve very closely this year, so it could be a good comparison, especially with the same variant being 95%+.

I have lost count tbh, it’s only the start Spain, Greece etc will be on their knees again by summer.

Until this lockdown in Italy they had regional restrictions for the last 4 months. Areas with the least incidence had bars and restaurants open until 6pm daily.

It definitely will imo. Glynn has mentioned Europe in some of his press conferences. I hadnt really followed it and am a little shocked now at how bad it appears to be in many countries.

    Sad to hear.

Guess we will have to take a cautious approach to opening back up. By we, I mean Ireland. Aren't you in Australia? How's life over there?

No. Most of Europe did not have lockdowns in October so what for us was wave 2 and 3, was all wave 2 for Europe. Strictly speaking I would suggest what we call wave 3 was in fact a delayed continuation of wave 2 following the autumn level 5

Yeah life is great here, been fairly normal (Sydney) for about 7-8 months and but since mid Feb we are now probably back pre-Covid life. 31C yesterday but raining today hopefully it’s dry next Sunday for the St Patrick’s day parade.

It's really a disgrace to see most of Europe going into lockdown again just because they completely ****ed up their vaccine rollout. What waste of everybody's time. I know it's **** here too but it's nearly better that our hopes weren't up for return to normality only to be dashed yet again as in europe..

Sad that Australia gets a St Patrick's parade but ourselves can't for a second year. Always a nice day out.

47million vaccines have been injected so far in the EU, out of a global total of 345million.

If a 4th wave hits Europe and cases increase in Ireland, we may be about to teach the world a very important lesson in how useless lockdowns actually are.

Almost half a year of severe lockdown and cases spiking wouldn’t be a good look for lockdown.

While I certainly don’t want cases to increase, it would be great for people to understand that the illness peaks when it peaks regardless of restrictions.

We can stop blaming Christmas if cases increase while in severe lockdown.

We are not in lockdown and never were.

If you were out today you would know that.

That's impressive but not nearly enough.
