The ****ing jokers are YET AGAIN using a lockdown because they have nothing else... just a ****ed up vaccine rollout.

This is dreadful and people should take to the streets in April, it simply should not be this way longer than April.

Jeez if they had their way we'd be in lock down until every single human in the world is vaccinated.

Pretty disgraceful they won't be lifting pretty much anything come April.

Although the weather will be better again by April, so people will flood outside and so they should.

    Fcuk them.

We're now looking at no changes of note being discussed for another 11 weeks, 9 weeks into our current level 5 lockdown. That's utterly mental

they're just blaming astra delays, well good luck to them, nobody goes out in the cold dead of winter...good luck keeping people in beyond April especially if last Aprils weather comes again..

You'd be amazed at who this suits, incels, misanthropes, people who were not very attractive looking to begin with, the mask is a bonus :D:D:D

"Modest" easing of restrictions - 6km travel limit?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,699 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

UK will be allowing indoor pint sessions for groups of six the same week we propose to open shops that sell clothes, and very likely would be allowing people outside of their 5km radius but for the fact that compliance with that is dropping at such a rate that if they don't relax it on April 5th the people will do so themselves.

    Slightly misleading.

What he said was the week before 5th April they will make the decision as to what changes on the 5th and the path for the next 6 weeks would be set out, like they did a few weeks ago telling us what could be lifted on the 5th of April.

From the week before the 5th plus 6 weeks would bring you into 10th May, thats pretty much the timeline most people expected for the next set of easing.

Did people expect a quicker reopening?? Its been pretty well flagged, a few things change early April, things go well another change in May.

Don't get me wrong it's annoying but this isn't something new.

If they're using 6 weeks from Easter to Mid May you can be sure they'll use 6 weeks from Mid May to the End of June

Conveniently synching with the end of Q2

They're really giving nothing to look forward to at all
Again it's just copying the UK with their minimum of 5 weeks between phases. By mid-May they'll have lost a lot of people anyway. It is also that messaging thing that Martin just can't grasp, especially when May should signal the end of the vulnerable groups.

So that's 5th of April to 17th of May with no further easing of restrictions bar construction which should never have been closed in the first place, possibly a 5km change (we'll see what NPHET has to say about goign to countywide travel) and maybe meeting up outddors

Very hard to see teams sports being back

So very little for 5 1/2 months of restrictions

If the UK sticks to the dates they've planned I'd be shocked to be perfectly honest

Mind boggling stuff - it really is.

Last year with no vaccines and a spike in March/April, and we still managed to reopen in ~3-4 months.
This year, with a spike in January, a vaccination program, and construction closed also - and it looks like we might not be reopening for 5 months+???

Imagine what would happen if there were no vaccines - lockdown the country for 6 months out of every year for the forseeable future?
Pathetic leadership in government. Absolutely pathetic.

Yeah that was my reading of it too from previous extensions that announcement would be ahead of 5th so 6 weeks would include time up to 5th anyway.

No, not at all. Thats what they have been flagging all along but highlights the current thinking albeit consistent.

I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised. This time they were transparent on what the plan is (not on why) - in April look into opening construction, lifting the 5k limit and in the best case look into allowing some form of no contact outdoor sport (golf, tennis).

That's basically level 4+ (level 4 plus no outdoor dining) by the way. A few less limits on gatherings but that's it.

What will make it a lot more difficult for them to control is the continuing overall decline in cases and numbers in hospitals. As we stand they will be empty of COVID patients in about 4 weeks.

I agree if cases, hospitalisation etc are all really low in let's say end of April start of May then there'll be massive pressure both internally in Gov and from external for a little more wiggle room.

It's easier to say 6 weeks and open more up in say 4 if things go well & everything looks good than the reverse.

They need to set targets at this stage to give people some hope. For instance if hospitalisations go below a certain number and similarly with ICU levels and cases. All this vague stuff is driving people nuts. They say they will be guided by the data so let us know the data limits are.

It's the difference in Taoiseach. The last government did want to live with COVID, the FF part of this one doesn't really want to until COVID is not quite zero! There's also the difference in our attitude. Last year we took it all seriously, now there's building frustration and more inclination to just be more casual about restrictions.

Individual group sports such as golf and tennis will be back for sure by the 5th. Hard to know what else

If we're comparing to last year, remember that a lot of restrictions were ended earlier than planned and phase 3 and 4 were consolidated.

No reason the same thing can't happen this go round as well.

Our hospitals coped with over 2000 Covid patients . In 4 weeks our most vulnerable will be vaccinated

Even if we went straight to level 3 our hospitals could easily cope

Level 3 in the past actually brought about a decline in cases

As an aside i dont know why FF are being so cautious. Like Boris across the water getting out of Covid restrictions was the only political play they had to remain in power .

Yet unlike last year, this year they have provided no dates for lifting of each sector. And now they are actually talking about pushing the dates back, not forward!

We are in an infinitely better situation last year, but the government have actually regressed in their response! - they have less of a plan than they did first time round:confused:

The last government (up to July) was very cautious also. We were the slowest in Europe at opening up (by some distance). The only difference now is that Leo is doing a clever job of positioning FG as the party who want to open up, and FF are stopping them. I prefer to judge by actions rather than words or spin.

As an Irish person living in Switzerland, is Ireland trying to stay in lockdown at level 5 to protect the fragile health system?

Thats the only thing I can think of because otherwise its crazy, Ireland is well below the EU average per 100,000 14 day rate

Here we are much lower than Ireland and the schools have never closed, the ski resorts never closed and now all shops are open including Zoos etc

I agree with the sentiment, but if a limit for something was 200 for 7 days in a row, (whatever it may be, cases, hospitalisations etc) and we're at 202 - do we open ? If yes, then what about 210 ? 215 ? The metrics have to be seen in context rather than just in isolation I think.

600 swabs at 3.93% positivity rate.

Last Wednesday was 673 at 4.41%. Slow slow prorgess.

Regardless of what restrictions that still remain in effect, I can see them being loosely followed.

I moved house just before Christmas and we had lots of different services postponed without any rescheduled dates. And over the past 2 weeks the kitchen fitters, stove installer, painter, landscaper, flooring company, door company and blinds fitters have been on looking to out. Stove went in last week and door and blinds this week. The rest have sates starting from next week. We'll stay out of the house during the work.

Neighbors on both sides are Gardai and there had been nobody visiting at all up until recently. Now it looks like there are people there every other night. Don't know anyone who can't get hair or beauty treatments done through whatsapp and there are gyms open behind closed doors. Shops and that can't overtly open their doors. But from my experiences recently, people that can provide services without the need for people walking into their business are finding a way to do so.
