I’ve mine coming next month and I don’t want to be regretting my order before I get it!

ha sure you're more qualified with your BMW history at this stage :D

Even though I've ran out of charge a little on both Monday & Tuesday, the petrol gauge hasn't moved.

Looks gorgeous, handing is still good despite the batteries etc, what's not to like.

    Hi carsfan2

You wont regret it, I have mine nearly 2 months now and love it far more that the 530i M. Ride, handling, and general picup is far better that the 5. The only area the 330 is inferior is the plushness (obviously), and the sound (had Harmon Kardon in the 5), both I can easily forgive both.

When the car was delivered from JD there was about 30% fuel in the tank, I put in €30 that day and as of yesterday had a petrol range of 376KM remaining. Granted all my driving is short trips at present and probably doing 95% full electric driving, and I re-charge every day, (thank god with the price of Petrol at present).

The extraboost is a cool feature, (when doing that high percentage of relaxed electric driving), engaging both motors for 6-7 seconds and using the paddles is great fun...

After driving for a few weeks you will begin to appreciate the "Energy cost", not in monetary terms but in range, if you have a full charge (about 45km range), Heated seats will immediately take 10km off that, cabin heating another 3-4 KM etc...

I sold the Tesla M3P recently as I wasn't using it due to Covid restrictions, WFH etc. But have been thinking about what I will buy to replace it near the end of the year, really keen on the X5 45e as I mentioned here before, so the repayments on it are very interesting I think. Top of the range spec model is the following, 10% deposit with 5k of that being the SEAI grant here are the figures:

    Price: 107,700
    SEAI: 5,000
    10% - SEAI: 5,770
    Finance amount: 96,930
    GMFV: 53,415
    Monthly: €1,576.
    Interest: 4.9%
What they don't show you though is the interest repayments in the PCP figures they give you, if I'm calculating it correctly it will be the:
    ((36*1576) + 53415) - 96930 = 13221.

The killer here is your always paying interest on the GMFV which for some reason I feel hard done by :)

Have been trying to convince myself that this wouldn't be the worst deal in the world given that the govt is basically discounting the car by about €25k between the VRT and SEAI grant (which will eventually go away) the at the moment and the depreciation on it shouldn't be too bad, but that 13k of interest is killing me. If this was 0% interest or even a bit lower I would buy it, BMW of course are screwing the customer on the interest rate as they have the 4.9% on EVs and only 2.9% on the diesels, so the gov give on one hand BMW take away on the other.

    was looking at the sums

assume you have no equity at the end, if you put 30% deposit in i calculate that it costs you 2,300 less in payments over the 36 months (take the deposit plus 36 payments) as you are obviously paying interest on a lower amount.

They are financing the full cost including GFMV so why would it not be included in the interest calculations?

The M3/4 reviews are coming through thick and fast.
Another car that will be a rare sight in Ireland. I seem to recall that Fitzgeme has/had one on preorder before Tesla turned his head. Wonder if they will sell into double digits even here?

how much do the ZF 8 speed gearboxes differ from car to car? seems to be in everything from Tiguans to astons to M cars?

They can differ quite significantly depending on how they're set up and coded.

Had one previously in a Jag XF and found it slow and laggy, could be quite frustrating when pulling out of junctions for example, and it was designed for economy so always hunted a higher gear even when you didn't want it to.

I've driven a good few BMWs with the same 8-speed ZF, including my wife's X3, and the difference is massive. Much more responsive and always seems to be in the right gear.

They also have different torque rates depending on the model eg the one in the 520d has much lower torque tolerance than the one in the 535d. The one in the M cars would be much higher spec again.

I’m looking forward to the tighter handling and slightly smaller size as well as improved performance. I will charge overnight but if I can get economy anything near my last 330e I will be happy.

I've been driving it hard (charging it every night) and the petrol needle hasn't moved. Got every green light and very little traffic into work this morning and I had a serious blast in it, really impressed.

Mark how does it compare with interior space compared to the current 5 series? Looking at the legroom dimensions there it looks like there is nothing in it but does it feel much tighter in reality? It has a longer wheelbase and is wider than the E39 which always felt like a 'big car'

Does the new 330e come in xdrive?

Ill jump in here, I didn't notice any significant internal size difference coming from the 5 down to the 3, obvious there is one but I didn't notice. Leg room, no issue between the two, the back seats maybe, but im never back there anyway.

The outside size difference is very noticeable on the other hand, Id constantly be stressing passing cars parked cars on a tight road, but that is just not an issue in the 3...

No I changed it for an X3 2.0d mSport to scratch my SUV itch, a fine machine but it's moving on soon...;)

I’d say the only real drawback is the boot size compared to the 5. That and if you’ve small penis syndrome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I went from a 5 Series to a 4 Series GC and don't miss the difference in size. Both are F Series cars however but I do miss the superior cabin refinement of the 5 Series. With the G Series cars the 3/4 Series are much closer to the 5 Series in terms of cabin qaulity, size and refinement. However I expect the next generation 5 Series will move the game on again.

    I see you're motoring well too :)

Surely the Beemer badge alone makes up for the small penis?

Im thinking that a 330e xDrive Touring ticks a lot of boxes

Part of the reason I’ve gone for another touring as well as preferring the looks and ease of a hatch is to overcome the smaller boot. However it never really was a problem on my last one.
Current 3 series is definitely slightly bigger inside for passengers than previous but it’s still not as spacious as a 5 though I don’t think.
