2000€+ for quarantine seems pretty excessive, I've paid less than half for 2 weeks in all inclusive resorts lmao.

Big question that I haven't see any info on is how long these countries will be on this list for.

Was there a sunset clause put in this legislation where it will no longer be a requirement for arrivals for these countries. Do countries just get added/removed overnight?

It's a little concerning that mainstream media haven't questioned if this will be an ongoing requirement for say 6, 12, 24 months down the line.

In general this has been very concerning to me, there is very little information available on how long these emergency powers and regulations will last and what triggers a removal of them. March was extended to April May June or longer with very little information given. I find this very frightening.

Yea for example Austria is on the list, which is just bizarre, they had an issue with a variant in Tyrol around a month ago but their case level has been comparable to Ireland.

Like what are the measures for picking once country out over another? It seems very arbitrary and picking on Austria is bonkers.

As regards the legislation, there is a sunset clause of 3 months, which i guess is from today as it has been signed by the President, so it will expire on 7 June unless it is renewed.

Question for you lads. I have to head to Limerick to do a PCR randox test before I fly out from Dublin.

If I get the bus and get stopped can I just show them my booking for the test + flight details?

If my brother that lives with me can drive me there would that be an issue if I have the above information too?

Im not sure how solid that date is the OP quoted but here's a timeline. Seems the ban might be replaced with other strict measures

Hi I saw it on a live global Covid news blog on the Guardian, don't think there was a link to an entry. 1 April was also mentioned for lifting their ban - they have clearly had a lot of pressure from the EU on the basis that free travel was allowed within Belgium but not overseas. This could be significant if Ireland allows inter-country travel this summer but seeks to block foreign travel:

I have a feeling Austria will be taken off this red list before Hotel quarantine comes into force.

No way this government are going to impose this on another EU nation without good reason.

And with no direct flights from any of the other Level 2 countries (except United Arab Emirates) the hotel quarantine is a farce. There is no need to pay 2k for a locked hotel room if you're connecting flights in any other EU country first. Just get separate tickets and a new negative RT-PCR test there and then walk into Ireland.

Which is also the way it should be I believe - now that everyone needs a negative PCR test when entering the country the number of positive cases being imported is close to negligible, and more a PR stunt from the Irish government.

Myself and the Mrs are flying to Budapest this evening assuming all restrictions are lifted by 4pm. She hasn't even packed yet and she headed off to work as normal today.... I'm sure Ryanair will in touch with my refund if we don't go!

If RA cancel the flight you'll get a refund, if you decide not to travel no refund.

Yes, even if you want to be completely honest, you can spend 14 days in an Airbnb in Spain before coming back. Nicer than 14 days in Citywest. From an Irish perspective if achieves the same thing, just more fun

There is no reason why any Irish resident should find themselves stuck in hotel quarantine in Ireland. It can be easily, and legally, avoided

I would assume that a passengers recent travel history will pop up on the screen in passport control when they scan the passport? I would have thought that this is how they'd separate the quarantine passengers given that the passengers off every flight will most likely all be using the same arrivals hall?

Guys is the dentist appointment excuse still an option?

I plan to visit Mexico in April and would legit like to avail of dental treatment there. It's of course not the reason for the journey, but would proof of my appointment be enough for the Garda at the checkpoint?

I'll be going regardless but it would be nice to have a "valid reason".

Does anyone know if showing a negative PCR result from an app is sufficient on arrival into Dublin Airport? My friend is moving home from Germany and she wouldn't be able to show paperwork based on the timeframe but would have the result on her phone. Thanks, Griff

Nope! Identity is all that pops up, once it matches whats printed on the passport then off you go... They do know which flights are coming in and when, the fact that there's almost no flights arriving into Dublin with almost no passengers makes checking very easy...

I presume you're both Hungarian citizens?

Why would you get a refund?

I dont know if that amount of information is available to Irish passport control? Especially within the EU when passports are not usually scanned. So, if you went from South Africa to Dubai on one ticket, and from Dubai to Dublin on another ticket, why would Dublin be made aware of the SA leg of the flight. In flying and customs terms, they are 2 completely separate journeys

You could have stayed in Columbia from when you were there last month? Easier than coming back here and going back down to S. America?

Realistically, when will non-essential travel be permitted again (no fines) within the EU ?
    2022 ?

I'm due to travel to Mexico at end of June and have dental appointments booked. Obviously not my main reason either.

As long as the fine doesn't increase from €500 I'll be travelling anyway. It'd be great if you could let us know how it works out for you.

Many EU countries at the moment allow fine-free non-essential travel with a negative PCR test.
Or do you only mean travel from Ireland?
In which case my guess would be early May, but maybe not every EU country.

This is the big question. I have no problem if another country says no you cannot enter on non-essential travel but that is very different from 'no you cannot leave and or will be fined' It depends how much faith you put in the govt here. They already seem to be suggesting that there will be no foreign travel for Paddy in Summer 2021, regardless of what is happening in Europe. This will be highly unpopular if a combination of vaccination and lockdown result in a very low covid rate that would have enabled travel under the traffic light system.

I would think that if we maintain a travel ban and €2k fine while the rest of Europe moves around freely, Ryanair or maybe the EU will challenge the constitutionality of it. The health emergency justification would no longer stand if our numbers are low, Europe numbers are at the levels of last summer, and the rest of Europe and the UK is freeing up.

If the health emergency cannot be justified, would the travel controls not be in breach of EU rules? I’d be surprised if there is no meaningful challenge to it
