Can they be safely opened soon - probably. Hopefully.

Are they essential? Get ta ****. Pull the other one :pac:

It's obviously not food, shelter or air, but then a takeaway is hardly essential in that regard as you can get food and cook it.

Tbh, at this stage I could actually do it with a haircut just for mental reasons. Might sound sad but it would make me feel somewhat normal at least as I wouldn't look like a homeless person anymore.

I wouldn't complain for at least one week if they opened them tomorrow. It's all I want at this stage. Ye can keep your 5km, just give me a haircut.

Same and everyone I know is saying similar. Hair salons seem to be the most lusted after thing right now. Trying to get an appointment in May after they’ve been closed for over 5 months is going to be a nightmare.

    More essential than schools imo.

I feel the exact same way. It might be shallow well then call me shallow, but being able to get my hair done would really lift a weight of the mental load that this has taken on me. It’s hard to see any positivity in anything when you just look and feel like absolute shlte

I'd say you can add at least two months to that schedule and I would consider that optimistic tbh

I fear you'll be right there

Still once the most vulnerable are vaccinated by Mid May the pressure on the government to ease restrictions quicker will definitely start increasing

This fella reckons he saves 800 dollars a year cutting his own hair. Good videos to follow. I've saved loads on them. I usually get a short back and sides so not too complex but happy enough with it. Can't comment on the hairdressers etc as that probably not possible with a youtube video.

Announced the end to all Covid restrictions in the state.

    Reading it I was shocked

That Texas had any restrictions in the first place

Given that we've been much slower in having the vaccines rolled out and we'll be later in re-opening shops than the UK is, does that mean that Irish people are generally much less likely to take risks in general than people in Great Britain?

    Bloody foolish students in UL

Videos doing the rounds of 100 students having a party in college court

    Setting off fireworks as well

Unless his haircut costs about 60-70 euro every time (assuming he goes once every 4 weeks), no way he can save 800.

Also, it's really only certain haircuts you can do at home (pretty much anything with a razor). It's not the same as a proper trained barber cutting your hair at all.

The only thing I want back for my self at this stage is hairdressers, I can understand the other things I like being kept shut (travelling, cinema etc). Hairdressers are safe imo and should be allowed open and it seems to be one of the first thing that reopens in nearly every other country proving others see it as safe.

Yup seen those. No wonder Limerick still has one of their higher rates when you see that along with the funeral stuff. Hopefully their college finds who it was and hands out the punishments they were on about.

The firework vid in particular is dangerous in a normal time, absolutely brain-dead.

The only way we will be allowed a hint of a life this summer, is not so much to do with the vaccinations and getting the most vulnerable vaccinated. It will come down to the level of infections and disease in communities. We had some good numbers today and I hope it continues to go down.

I think MMs speech of 40% or 80% of the population vaccinated by June was overly optimistic and perhaps pressured from Boris Johnsons speech. I would love for it to happen but I can't see it happening. Ireland is just moving into the group of 80 to 85 age group in communities and the groups will work downwards eg. 75 to 80, 70 to 75.

Like I said, I think it was too optimistic but I hope it comes to pass. If not, many people will go into to the summer unvaccinated. What's the point in saving all the elderly from the virus, just to allow the virus to fester in the under 70s? There's no sense in that.

The key will be supressing the virus in the communities. The numbers have to come down.

I'm having difficulty thinking of another service, aside from dentists, where you spend as much time in someone else's breathing space..

    No. Governments are different.

Ours are even w@nking off stating we now amongst the lowest rates in Europe.

No sh!t with the strictest level of restrictions in the EU.

They actually think that the EU give a monkeys.

Germany actually started reducing their levels of restrictions yesterday.

At least the one I went to (I can't speak for all), they were well ventilated, had good ppe, you were wearing a mask, and social distancing amongst customers. They're also in a habit even pre covid of cleaning regularly and making sure them and their equipment is spotless. I'm sure there are hairdressers who don't do that or course, but I'd imagine the vast majority are.

Northern Ireland haven't even committed to any dates for reopening yet. They are as vague as here.

Germany did announce the rest of the restrictions will remain till the end of March. I know hair dressers are reopening.

UK like us are starting with schools reopening.

So up until the end of March, early April, there's very little difference with reopening between the UK and Ireland. But of course point to us and complain despite not knowing what position we'll be in by the start of April.

Found this interesting - NY Times shows a breakdown of restrictions by State across the USA. A quick look suggests that we are suffering over here to a far greater extent, even though numbers in the USA are seemingly dropping quickly too. Rather than our 5km, nobody is restricted in crossing state to state. But I guess their figures are still worse.

    New York:

    6034073

Colorado have a somewhat more believable plan than ourselves - which appears to give people clear ideas of what needs to happen to loosen restrictions (notwithstanding they don't have that many compared to us):

I think Michael Mairtíns speech was too optimistic. He said 80% of the population vaccinated by June. I think that's what he said. The over 80s in the communities are the current group for vaccinations. I find it hard to see how there will be 80% vaccinated by June. I hope it happens.

The vaccinations are so slow. I can see us going into the summer with a lot of people not vaccinated. The key for a successful reopening will be low virus transmissions in communities.

The US are only beginning to see the impact of new variants, and they have had a huge spread (estimated at 40% infected by some). It's not comparable to us. The CDC are warning about a fourth wave, which realistically isn't something we are worried about just now.

Vaccine number are meant to be ramped up when supply does

We should be getting 1m doses per month over April - June

God help us if Martins speech was too optimistic

There was very little in the speech to be optimistic about

Think it's season 1 before they got the animation style we associate The Simpsons with. Season 1 Homer looks odd in comparison.

Been on a DIY haircut since this all began, the bald bits were outweighing the hairy bits already and it became easy to switch to a "short all over" option

One Premiership footballer is reputed to pay something like 5 grand a time to get his done
