@ Richard Tea, you know thinking about it there, if you didn't get any notification from school regarding classes beginning in the afternoon, it sounds a bit random for it to be happening. Could your child have gotten the wrong end of the stick ? We were told from the school re new timetable for this week.

Just had a look. They use Microsoft teams. Seemingly the class timetable went out the window. He has 2 subjects today. Then 4 subjects each day up until Friday.

Are you just looking at the calendar? Only live classes come up there. Work set should be visible in posts or class notes.

I’d be getting on to the school if morning classes are not happening, that’s madness.

Have a look into "assignment"s in teams, you will see work that has been assigned and when it is due. Typically, if work has been left for a class it will be put up there and will have to be submitted within class time so that the student can be marked present for that particular class.

Young lad in 2nd year. This is his home schooling lately. All last week he had 1 -3 lessons which didn't start until 2pm. Today his first class is 12:30. Teaching consists of a 25 minute zoom call. He is rarely instructed to read a passage and answer questions etc. 90% of the time he is not required to take notes etc. Shocking to think when be actually returns to school he will only have 6-7 weeks left before the summer holidays. Don't suggest getting onto the teachers or school because realistically what would be required is a minimum of 5 hrs a day actually teaching and correcting work to catch up. Is it totally at the schools discretion if a parent requests a child repeats a year?

Our eldest is in 2nd Year. What you have outlined doesn't seem right. Our lad has had 1 "late" start a week and that is 9.40am.
The School were using a Lockdown Timetable until today when it reverted to the regulat Timetable. He has been on the Laptop since 8.45am today. He is at the Dining Room table so I keep an eye on him.

I would definitely contact the school and talk to them.

"Importantly, we have found no evidence of more severe disease having occurred in children and young people during the second wave, suggesting that infection with the B.1.1.7 variant does not result in an appreciably different clinical course to the original strain. These findings are in keeping with early national data. Severe acute respiratory COVID-19 remains an uncommon occurrence in children and young people."

Schools are back, its great news. Our school were delighted this morning, teacher couldn't be happier, same with our neighbours that are teachers.
Next we need to get the kids back to sports, hopefully start of April.

And what of transmitting the virus to family in the home (many would have an underlying issue), and out to their workplaces, potentially causing our hospitals to be under pressure again and extended lockdown for us all?

Thanks all. Massive can of worms opened here. He pleads he was unaware of the assignments section. He is going to be busy catching up. I have emailed his class teacher.

    Opps.

Funny how the various class teachers or year head never contacted you to say nothing was being turned in.

I'll be properly getting him in trouble now, but he would have to be fairly oblivious to not know about assignments section, there is a notification for each assignment set (no reason for teacher to turn those off).

The other thing to note is, it is not just your son that is trying to get away with not doing work and participating in school, there are loads of them at it! The way I look at it is, I probably would have done the same at his age too! Not that they should be let away with it!

I agree. I've informed him regardless if it was a genuine mistake or not he will have to complete the assignments. The class teacher is to get back to me regarding why this wasn't flagged sooner.

Just to note, we’ve been advised by principal to tread very carefully regarding contacting parents as we are not always aware of what challenges families may be facing. So we’ve been flagging it with the child in very gentle terms before making any contact. For example I’ve given offers of help/warnings that I’m aware of no homework - to at least 5 kids since midterm and will be making contact with parents by the end of this week.

Same type of thing happening in our school. Glad you got to bottom of it anyway Richardtea.

So, give us your anecdotes then, how was collection/drop off for you all today? Were parents being mindful not to congregate? Or was it business as normal?

Was in Lidl this morning and a couple of people not wearing masks, first time I've seen it in ages, think some are definitely feeling emboldened by the events of the weekend to flout the guidelines. Desperately hope the reopening works, but I think it'll be a miracle if case numbers don't skyrocket again...

I guess we'll see in the next 2-3 weeks just how much Schools are responsible for spread as practically everything else (apart from "essential" retail) is closed and numbers are currently, slowly dropping

It's a bizarre virus as it apparently doesn't spread anywhere
    • Pub owners say it doesn't spread in their buildings
    • The "government" say it's not spreading in the schools (absolute nonsense)
    • Hairdressers say they're not responsible for outbreaks either

    Covid is apparently miraculous

We have a 'drop and go' system at my kids school so there is no need for any parent to get out of their car which meant nobody could congregate. Collection we have to park and go to allocated door to collect kids - usual few parents chatting at the door and at their cars. Some people just dont listen or do what is right. Everyone else kept their distance and didnt hang around.

Bigger concern for me is the noticeable difference in the amount of people that are out and about today. Construction traffic seems to be back on the road - trucks, machinary etc. I had to go to our local town today to collect something work related and found it hard to get parked. You definately wouldnt think we are still in level 5. I think many see the return of schools as a sign that things are getting back to normal. This is the attidude that could ruin our chances of everything reopening in the summer.

Im a SNA with LCAs and they all take off their masks if they have any distance between them.
One of them took someones mask that was resting on the table and made out they were going to spit in it only to move the mask at the last minute and spit on the floor. These are mates btw who had a good laugh about it.

    A controlled environment my a**.

Jesus did they get sent home. That's mad behaviour, I'd be sending them home, calling home and actually I'm not sure what else, no one has done anything like that in our place

First day done. All kids bar one had a mask on this morning. They kept them on in the classroom for most of the day. Yes they fiddled with them but mostly didn't cause any problem. We spent a lot of the day outside playing and doing some maths activities. Everyone enjoyed themselves including myself. I only went to the staff room to get a cup of tea and left once I had it made! Will be having my lunch in my room again until Easter and see how things are once we return after the holidays. There was no parents hanging around before or after school. So hopefully that'll continue now for another while.

Had your school requested mask wearing or had this happened by chance?

Advised wearing of masks. All seem to have taken it on board. I plan to spend as much time outside as we can now the weather is so nice to encourage them to wear them and also have some mask breaks during the day.

tbf that is a behavioural issue and not reflective of the general student population. It needs to be addressed via the school behavior policy. Log it , pass it on to the year head and raise an issue gia the LWR.

    Which class are they?

So respectful of those parents and children to be considerate and mindful of things like that.

Not at all. I really strained my relationship with them at the start of the year trying to enforce the rules but it lead to a toxic environment.

They don't listen to me as a SNA.

I'd be in the exact same position as you being an SNA that works with lcas in large rural school, lovely lads for the most part, but couldn't give a flying fcuk about covid.

Now our lads are a torture to try and teach but want to do nothing but mess and one even said that Covid isn't real today.
Tongue in cheek but shows where the head is at.

Do they not have a tutor, LWA or YH you could go to, it's certainly not your job. I'm a YH and if an SNA told me that I'd be acting immediately m very unfair on you given your in the class all day.

    To add to this:

The head of Irish Construction was on the radio earlier defending his industry saying "only 30 cases in Ireland have been linked to Construction"

Covid in Ireland is truly a phenomenon!

Maybe it's all just a figment of our imaginations

Schools will still be asking for masks and SD for most of next yr, once they become part of H&S , removing them will be an issue. be warned.
