If you don't have an EV, is it still worth moving to night time electric?

3300 kWh approx usage per year.

Paying 13.75c with Energia for daytime units.

Probably not but you'd have to see what your night time usage is and calculate from there.

Its only worth it if you can use 30%+ of your units on the night rate.

If you are working from home it's pretty hard to hit the night rate percent to make it worth your while without an EV. As it is with 3300kWH your consumption is on the low side. So unless you are confident you can move much of your consumption to 11-8, I wouldn't bother.

  • Registered Users Posts: 65,048 ✭✭✭✭unkel

for 3300kWh per year with normal rate at 13c, but day rate at 14c, night rate at 8c and a €50 higher standing charge, the break even percentage is having 41% of your units on night rate. That's a lot if you don't have an EV, I wouldn't bother

    3300 (x * 0.08) + 3300 (1-x)*0.14 + 50 = 3300 * 0.13

    x=0.41

Thanks folks. Was assuming so. Thanks for confirming.

1/2 people working from home usually btw, so backs it up even more so.

And given that night rate is only 9 hours per day, without a serious effort running almost all of your dish washing / clothes washing and clothes drying during night rate, you'd struggle to make that 41%

Interesed in any feedback on the unit. It looks like it may suit my system.

Noticed I was producing a lot more than I could use during the last few days of sunshine and about 30% was feeding back into grid with no payback. I was turning on immmersions and caravan heaters and all sorts to use it rather than give it to the grid for free!

Last years February must have been great, my predicted total was 207.2kWh but I only managed 90% of that due to a late surge that saw 90kWh generated in the last 8 days.

March's prediction is nearly double, at 387.5kWh.

    Highest day: 28th 13.4. Lowest: 7th: 1.2.
    Self consumption: 98.6%.
    Self sufficient: 25.8%

Huge jump on January. Feb daily average of 6.7kW above January's highest day of 5.7kW. East panels not getting full sun yet due to shading.

Battery started nearing 100% in the last week so Zappi has come into play and the car now runs on sunshine. Zappi doesn't seem to turn on with Eco++ for the surplus 1.4 kW required as the inverter appears to prioritise house battery over Zappi so I've used Eco+ setting. I can get a steady charge going from panels with top up from house battery if any clouds pass by. It's a bit of a manual process as I turn on when battery starts getting to 50% to ensure I'm not exporting later when battery is full but the car won't take surplus below 1.4 kW.
