They like to spread the misery even more.
Funny the only things I've heard on the radio at work the last two days is that we are moving in the right direction and HSE hopes to get care home visits sorted.

Most of my friends that range in the 28 to 35 age are completely done with restrictions and attending house parties tonight.

Talking to a work colleague as well and said he can't take it anymore that he's done with restrictions and going to his friends in another county now for beers tonight. A lot of people agitated now on zoom calls as well throughout the day in work.

People are fed up and rightfully so.

There biggest qualm is if they can't control the airports what's the fecking point.

If the government don't end this 5KM limit soon where people can go to the beach, nature walks, scenic drives etc and just allow people to travel within their own county we are done.

There is only one subject worth discussing - vaccination. We MUST get on a war footing on this. Where is the national effort? This is the greatest emergency in the history of this state. Nothing is more important. Yet we are dawdling along with our usual mix of incompetence, infighting and vested interests...
Jesus, what a basket case this country can be.
My Mother in Law (lung cancer recoverer aged 83) was phoned by St Vincents to come in (from Bray) for her vaccine. She was thrilled and really grateful (as that generation tend to be). My brother in law took the day off work to bring her. When they got there they were told they only had Astra Zeneca and they 'could not understand' why she had been phoned.
She was so upset. Now she has no idea when (or if) she will be vaccinated.
    What a crowd of amateurs.

Break it down for us so.

Cases have been going down for weeks now, vaccinations are going up.

    Easy enough for you?

You're having a tantrum due to a micro level problem. On the macro level things are more positive than your reaction would suggest.

Nice story about vaccinated Spanish pensioners going to the theatre.

Thanks for your 'macro level' response. Must be great to be all 'big picture'. Have a chat with my 83 year old Mother in Law - she is very worried about dying.

No, I'd agree that hopefully the chances of mutations rendering the vaccine ineffective is low. My issue was with the suggestion that it's more likely that an (actual) new problematic virus will arise than for covid to mutate problematically, given that covid currently has 20+ million hosts with oodles of multiplication in each one to potentially mutate in, and it has already made the important jump to being transmissible between humans.
So I was just wondering at the calculations being used for that.
There are no calculations. It was an off the cuff remark that a single mutation which renders the current vaccines ineffective has a very low probability of happening, as does the emergence of a brand new virus (which existing vaccines would be ineffective against). I thought the fact I said "probably" hinted that this was a casual statement rather than a quantified theory. Though if you count SARS (1) and MERS, they are starting to appear at a reasonable rate.

In any case I'm sticking with the view that it wasn't accurate or a good idea to say that one of the new variants is "equivalent" to a new virus.

    Wouldn't disagree with that.

Would disagree with the suggestion that other as of yet unknown viruses are more likely to become problematic in the near future than a covid variant. (Hopefully for the next pandemic they'll be better organised, but I wouldn't hold my breath.)

If everyone did this it will likely lead to a rise in cases and is the very reason why we are in lockdown with restrictions.

Currently the plan is to get the schools back and review the situation in early April and hopefully we will see a slight easing at that stage and see some retail open up. The very actions of your friends are selfish and will contribute to the virus spreading more and will keep us in lockdown further to control the spread.

Fu(k our government and the lack of action on controlling our borders. Fu(k them but protesting and defying restrictions isn't going help you if you contract the virus and become ill. No one knows how the or body is going to handle an infection but it's best avoided of at all possible. I'm fed up of lockdown too but I don't want to risk and infection and risk spreading it to others. That's not going to help anyone.

Selfish selfish selfish carry on. I know it's hard we are a yesr into this but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it's near. We knew last March this virus wasn't going to disappear over night. Why fu(King Irelands progress up now?

This sounds terrible. I was listening to Joe Duffy and loads of people with similar stories. Not for the first time I had to turn it off. Too sad. I hope someone with real authority can make changes so that crap doesn't happen. Managing expectations is a big part of this.

There is complaining and there is complaining just for the sake of it. We all know what to expect or at least have a good idea of what is going to be reported, but then moan or complain day in and day out is pretty sad.

Can someone remind me of the 5km logic? In the US, with dropping numbers, you can travel from State to State, but here it's a police checkpoint situation. What exactly is the big risk here? Is it really that everyone will descend on the same beach? Don't think so.

Quoting myself from earlier. What gives with this 5km? Why are all other countries not doing it? Or are they?
I had to get something in not the nearest B&Q yesterday, and while it was probably fine under essential retail, I wondered what the issue was with anyone driving any distance once they don't congregate.

Maybe the macro isn't so great. This is the opposite of the exponential increase we saw in late December early Jan. It's exponential decay. It's not great. Haven't been arse looking at it but macro / micro sounded interesting.

To me looks like it's reaching a steady state. That's not good. As it looks to be levelling off at a high level just as everyone is pure fed up. For that reason I think Deusexmachina may be right on a macro level.

The 5km fiasco is tied to legislation preventing landlords evicting tenants nothing at all to do with health issues complete farce by an incompetent government

The poster was talking about defying restrictions because of the governments handling of the borders.
Think about it for a minute - are you realistically going to be dreaming of the government and the governments handling of the virus if you were to fall ill and bedridden from an infectious disease?

Not sure about the person you quoted but I know quite a few people who are finished with the 5km travel restrictions including myself.
