Why don't 3rd-6th class teachers have to return to school also when SNAs/SET for them classes have to? Or are they to support JI-2nd class also in school? Why not all staff back then? There doesn't seem to be any talk at all about this ridiculous decision on the news or online?

I have a feeling - it’s to either reduce numbers in a class so take a spill or be a stand in if a teacher is out. So frustrating.

i assumed we where all remote learning so that the unions and department could get better measures into place as part of an actual plan to return to schools, turned out, as usual nothing was done.
Separately I see that the UK Government has approved a £700m fund to ensure students can catch up on lost learning. This includes summer classes/lessons for secondary schools, language development, additional funding for disadvantaged schools, tutorials, etc.

It's been described as inadequate but at least it's being considered. https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-extra-cash-pledged-for-pupil-catch-up-programme-and-summer-schools-12227107

And the fact that some members of NPHET have business dealings in the procurement of PCR tests.
    WTF!!

Really?? If this is true well then that's nuts, total conflict of interest.

I thought the rapid tests would be handy for around Xmas for the likes of restaurants etc, I know they aren't that accurate but better than nothing.

So I don't engage with my own students online I usually take out throughout the school day?

Oh please, the only "fringe groups" who have been "protesting" in the middle of this GLOBAL PANDEMIC are anti-vaxxing, COVID denying, Bill Gates blaming, "New World Order" spouting idiots.

Well in fairness, the words of Bill are a little worrying,

Sure, they won't be in school so presumably you'll just have to do your teaching from home in the school building. This makes no sense to me, but none of this plan makes any sense. Numbers are several times higher than what they were in September, with more contagious variants present in the community and no further safety precautions are in place. They even had the cheek to mention ventilation as if it was some new piece of advice.

I think this idea comes from the suggestion that Cillian de Gascun is the director of the NVRL, who have a contract with the government for testing. Now, this suggestion assumes that the NVRL are some sort of private, for profit outfit, when in fact is is part of the UCD department of Medicine, and the vast bulk of testing is not actually done by the NVRL. In other words, its nothing.

All this comparison with the Uk and Ireland is pointless....
The Irish Government will not invest in education
and to be honest with the way the vaccination programme is progressing here...we most likely will be in another lockdown.....

Why would that be the case when 80% of the adult population will have had a highly effective vaccine?

The cases in HCW are already showing the impact

Society certainly will not be closed all summer WTF.

Summer will be worlds apart from where we are now - some people don't seem to understand vaccination as well as weather/seasonal impacts.

Once over 60s and anyone under that with health conditions get their vaccination by April/May that will fix 98% of hospital admissions.

So it's a nothingburger, they're just totally unwilling to consider more robust safety measures because of ineptitude? Not sure what explanation is left.

Do you really and honestly think we will have 80% of the population vaccinated before summer

Yes I do. 5m people, 1m are kids leaves 4m to vaccinate with at least first shot.

we will be getting 1m doses per month from April onwards.

Leo said end of June not summer - so 1m per month in April, May and June plus whatever is done in Jan-Mar.

So yes 4m or 80% is well achievable.

Nothing is guaranteed but that's based on best estimates of supply including likely approval of J&J.

You do realise shortly after michael martin announced his statement last night ...It was announced that Astra zenica told the eu that it expects to deliver less than half the doses of covid 19 it was contracted to deliver to the eu in the second quarter..... j& j vaccine not approved yet..
I wouldn't read much into what this government promises....

Tonight there are 56 dead and 574 new cases .....the only thing this government is doing is bringing children back to schools with a virus that is highly transmissible in children.....great job

My 3rd class child is back on monday the school just sent me an email.

Because 2nd and 3rd share the classroom they are all coming in on Monday.

    Surely this isnt right.

Our principal just finished up with the INTO principals' zoom meeting and confirmed all SET and SNAs back in the building on Monday.

'Computer says No' comes to mind here.

That is correct. Anyone in the same room as one of the classes going back is also back.

Funnily enough we've been providing this for many a year, it's called July provision.

Isn’t July provision only for children with additional needs?

You do realise that Astra Zeneca refuted that claim and have said they will deliver all contracted vaccine supply in Q2

To me, it appears that without proper masks provided, no improvement of ventilation in school buildings (corridors are a disaster), no mention of improved close contact tracing, no on the ground measures have been taken to make schools any safer.

Despite the new variant becoming the dominant strain, despite children being far more likely to pass it on now.

Feels like the Gov. called unions bluff. Has anyone contacted their union rep? I emaied today but no reply, seems we're just taking this one lying down despite no improvement in on the ground safety and no I don't believe it when Des says school environment is safe - 30 people in one poorly ventilated room, nope.
