I honestly cant handle anymore of this fcuking nonsense. Its one bad piece of news after another and all we are told to do is be patient and wait and we cant even get our fcuking hair cut. Making predictions for one winter when we aren't even out of this one yet. Yeah good luck

Funny that when asked about what sort of summer we will see in terms of restrictions they kept saying we cannot predict what will happen and we cannot say.
But yet they are already talking about restrictions for next winter..ridiculous.

So the goal posts have moved from death’s, to hospitalisation’s to R number?

If the vulnerable are vaccinated in the UK, of which 18 million have received first dose, it’s going to reduce the hospital numbers and deaths drastically.

Why would R number still be relevant?

I'm going on what I'm reading from the UK. Their government is stating they will be using that as their guide regarding the removal of restrictions. If you genuinely want to know more about their reasoning, I'm sure the information is available.

And no 'alarmism" or "hysteria". The article linked references current research on the likleyhood of seasonality and the experts currently say that is unproven.

So unless you are saying you personally know better than those researching this issue - then your ideas are your own. Nothing else.

I'm not going through this with you again....its draining and pointless

Please just ignore each other from now on.

Tomas Ryan on prime time and a RESTAURATEUR as the alternative voice?!

A zero covid extremist who’s been accused of criminally misleading the population...I have no words

Whatever about an emergency health dept. discussing such issues why the actual f@$K are these discussions being released into the public domain and broadcast on the prime time news! This on the evening we have been told our nation is to remain in lockdown without firm commitment to dates to reopen our country?

Spring/Summer: "There's no proof that this is seasonal"

Autumn/Winter: "We need restrictions to protect against the seasonal Winter surge"

Seriously though, they really need to start increasing capacity in our hospitals and particularly ICU before Winter, there's no way the country will accept restrictions at Christmas to protect a pathetic health service.

The first 3 are already happening. Their scientists have repeatedly said variants are not a massive worry right now and even thrown shade at the media for how they report it and there’s already an adapted vaccine being put into production for the South African one I believe.

It’s very strange to me how many people are desperately trying to find an angle to downplay the UKs road map and vaccination efforts while simultaneously saying they care about the vulnerable and equally hope restrictions come to an end sooner rather than later.

Nope. That's simply the caveats from the gov.uk website - so no one is 'desperately trying to find an angle to downplay' anything. It's simply fact.

    Read the full transcript here:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-statement-to-the-house-of-commons-on-roadmap-for-easing-lockdown-restrictions-in-england-22-february-2021

    As for the first three
    First, that the vaccine deployment programme continues successfully;

THE UK are presently only distributing the first vaccine jab. People will have to wait 3 months on average to get the second shot. Thats a future which at this point is unknown.
    second, that evidence shows vaccines are sufficiently effective in reducing hospitalisations and deaths;

UK Hospitalisations and deaths remain high. Not only must deaths and hospitalisations decrease- it must stay that way in the 3 months to the second part of their vaccination programme.
    third, that infection rates do not risk a surge in hospitalisations which would put unsustainable pressure on the NHS;

The pandemic is dynamic- this remains a real risk.

    As does this.
and fourth, that our assessment of the risks is not fundamentally changed by new variants of Covid that cause concern.

Personally I hope it goes well for them.

I think we should stay locked down until next winter so we don't have to go into lockdown next winter.

Sure we may as well stay locked in until the winter after next just to be sure that the virus doesn't kill all of us

I have no sympathy for people like this. They are the reason we are in this hole.

Waiting for the man on the telly to tell them what to do and what to think.

In some ways, at the level of theory, it's such a pity your way of doing things (inasmuch as anything constructive can gleaned from your posts) will never be tried in the real world.

Wonder why that is. How can it all be so obvious and yet no one will do what you want them to do in any significant numbers.

Do you think it's the message or the messenger that's holding you back?

Sinn Féin want mandatory quarantine for ALL arrivals into the state including vaccinated uk and EU residents?! Meanwhile in the North, they’ll be able to go on foreign holidays in the summer where they’re also in power. What an absolute sh** show

Nothing of note will happen on 5th April. MM already told us 9 more weeks of severe lockdown.

5th April is just a random date thrown in to try and keep compliance going as they know now that public opinion is against them.

Bitter that they will have to admit Boris played a blinder on vaccines.

They said Boris was dreaming with his vaccine timeline.

They said Boris was wrong to space vaccines.

They said Boris was wrong to go it alone to source vaccines.

    Etc.

    I agree with Windmill here.

From the sounds of it, the UK plan is quite ambiguous with regards to progressing through the premarked stages.

Boris Johnson is extremely labile and even if he uses the word 'irreversible' that's meaningless because he is a habitual liar.

I'm not being pessimistic for the sake of it. I will believe they won't lock down this winter when they don't lock down this winter.

It might cause a backlash and a political crisis in the UK or it might be accepted due to its being accompanied with sophisticated propaganda.

(In fact the rationale for future lockdowns - vaccine-resistant new variants - has already been widely disseminated through the media.)

Yep. Wasn’t he spouting the end of April last week? So he has likely altered that to the beginning of the month because the end of April is two months anyway and balls to that. Not that anything “meaningful” will happen then anyway. Sure they’ve said as much today

They are softening people up for the next Autumn/Winter lockdown. Getting people used to it in their thoughts. There was even talk last month of Christmas 2021 restrictions.

Someone needs to have a word with all those dopes in the Dail. The EU are already starting to clamp down on these travel restrictions for European citizens within the EU.

It won't go over, people will have had their fill of this tedious sh1tshow. Seasonal flu every winter, deal with it. We're not going to be compliant little sheep anymore for a malfunctioning health service.

Johnson has been very careful and rightly so.

Saying the lockdown is over there is wishful thinking. The government there will be scrutinising everything going forward. While it's definitely something for people to be excited and hopeful about it's not as if they will definitely never see things close again.

I hope this doesn't happen because it will have a knock one effect here. If all goes well there I would imagine it will have a significant impact on things here.

    Article here worth a look

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/coronavirus-news-covid-lockdown-roadmap-vaccine-uk-reopen-school/amp/

The Prime Minister said that while he is "very optimistic" measures will be lifted come summer, "obviously, nothing can be guaranteed".

Totally agree, all the hype about protecting the vulnerable BS.
Little mentioned about the hundreds of thousands of cancer screenings (truly vulnerable and scared people) postpone for a year now, in many cases cancelled.

Fear the death toll from this farce will be many magnitudes higher from genuine illnesses going undiagnosed and treated.

This is the type of falsehood that characterises this thread. The cancer screening are cancelled because of Covid and because it is especially dangerous to ill people. Measures to control Covid will allow cancer services return to normal, yet many people here are opposing those measures, which shows that they don't give damn about cancer patients.

The sheer immaturity of many comments here is mind boggling. The government does not want the country closed, they want an end to this thing and when they achieve that then they will open things. A reasonable plan at Christmas was totally derailed by people taking the piss and by the introduction of the new variant which behaves differently. Consequently, the government does not give hard and fast information about what will happen in 6 months time as they do not know. They cannot know, as they cannot fully predict whether people will act responsibly, they cannot predict the evolution of a new virus and the virus manufacturers have already shown that they will renege on their commitments. By all means criticise the government for not having the legislation to control quarantine, or something else that they can control, but the pointless ranting about things they cannot control is both an insult to the many ill and bereaved people and it makes eejits out of the posters who post it.

I remember feeling a glimmer of hope yesterday with the release of the uk plans.
Anyone feeling hopeful across Ireland tonight? We have a whole new virus, closing down travel, and doom and gloom about next winter. Is there any reason to get up tomorrow? Or the next 60 days?

Wel I dunno know about you - I've yet to criticise the actual vaccination programme or indeed where the UK sourced them. I think its great their vaccination is going apace. And I wish the UK well.

So If you check the caveats I listed are the ones that Borises own government have placed on the gov.uk website.

Let's see how they get on before throwing stones at anyone

Aside from putting makey uppy dates on their plans, I don't get the excitement over the UK announcement.
It is glaringly obvious the plan is full of get outs and cavaets.
It also references variants, which seems to be something that is not an acceptable risk on this thread.
My personal opinion is if the UK plan works we won't be far behind them in easing restrictions anyway and if it doesn't work we are all in the same boat anyway.
The main difference at the minute is the communication methods. I think Boris Johnson is trying to take the initiative and show some leadership. He is taking a huge gamble however in not managing the expectations of the population a little more responsibly.
In contrast Michael Martin is utterly failing to show any semblance of leadership.
I think the Irish government are correct in being cautious, the UK are also being cautious they are just selling that cautious approach very differently.
As I said if the UK plan works out for them that's very good news for us so fingers crossed.

Maybe the government are hoping people stop adhering to restrictions en masse. Saves them making the big calls and leaves them clear of blame if things go tits up again.
