i could never ever understand the popularity of The Simpsons? found it mildly amusing at best

At the time it was very original.

An animation about a family and a town that appealed to kids but also had jokes for adults.

There was nothing like it on TV when it launched and it's first seasons were top drawer and funny.
    The show was very popular.

Of course a decline came but that should not take away from what it originally achieved.

Sort of like the Jetsons which was sort of like the Flintstones which itself was a rip off of the Honeymooners.

I think if you don’t find early Simpsons really funny, you should see a doctor, something wrong there.

Some fans call it Zombie Simpsons after it turned to ****. 2 very different shows.

All panel shows to me are just awful, except HIGNFY, the original. I think it's still worth keeping that but the rest of them make me panic to find the remote.

Cats does countdown is tiresome. Was never really that good really. Trever Horne is bad. Although I hate comedy music whoever it is. Richardson is just not very funny. They all seem kinda bored a lot of the time.
The Dara O Brian one was good years ago when Frankie Boyle was on it. Rubbish now.
Would I lie to you is still decent I think. Harmless fun. Mitchell is hilarious.

The Simpsons is a funny one.

I’d be a big Simpsons fan and like many could not care less about anything from the last ten years.

So many shows get sullied for carrying on but the Simpsons has held its legacy. The recent crap hasn’t done harm. I think fans of the show have just ignored or totally written a line though anything past the glory years.

Operation Transformation is completely played out at this stage. Pure exploitative television where everyone has a unique sob story. Plus the panel really needs replacing by now. That nutritionist is a right cow.

The people aren’t even that fat. Just stop having kebabs for dinner and an entire cake for dessert, you’ll be ‘transformed’ in no time.
    Next.

What I don't get about Cats does countdown is that it's always the same guests. I know Sean Lock and Jon Richardson are permanent but it's always the same

    Roisin Conaty
    Aisling Bea
    Alan Carr
    Richard Ayoade
    The German comedian, Hans something
    James Acaster
    Sarah Millican

I'm sure the Jimmy Carr is even sick of the same people all the time.

No, the humour in early season was more topical and risqué. Also had very famous guest stars that got slagged as well.

    It was definitely original,

If you think the people on that show are not fat than you should realise that's why the show is still on.

I was watching a fat blaming programme on BBc/C4 the other day & they said if you drank half a bottle of wine every night for six weeks that was the equivalent of eating 735 sausage rolls - gave me a bit of a fright!

All RTE ‘news’ programmes - focusing almost exclusively on pandering to Irish based politicans and giving them an uncontested platform to spout their rehearsed lines on and never challenge them. EU politicians and political bloc voting structure that we are prt of is totally ignored. MEP’s Ming & Mick Wallaces socialist hardworking GF forgotten & left ignored while representing MILLIONS in the country. unbelievably really.

Bring back Charlie Bird and his political doorstopping & sharp cutting investigations.

Operation Transformation...RTE so blind to how this program doesn't work, they even tried to give us Operation Covid Nation, before the nation cried 'enough' so they just changed the title, just can't watch any of this.

The Late, Late Misery Show on a Friday night.
I think they intentionally have people on with some disease or issue to make sure if people were enjoying their evening, they can go to bed feeling miserable.
I expect many like me do watch something else because life is hard enough for everyone right now, and this show just wants to remind people of the pandemic or of death non stop.

I used to like 'Countdown' now, however, I suspect it's about to go down the pan with last years Mulled wine.

What TV programmes do you reckon have gone stale or tired after being on the air for a good amount of time?

The voice, strictly come dancing, Xfactor. Britain's got talent.

    Really annoying shows.

Well with that cow Anne Robinson coming on it can only get worse.

    thats a weird choice.
if she acts the way she did on the weakest link then the show is doomed. not sure it would last a full season with that type of host.
maybe i wrong and she has a normal side

I'd say they were gutted this year they couldn't bring them to do the army course and for some army fella to yell at them.

My point is, they aren’t Cook Islands or Qatar fat (just to not mention USA as usual) needing stapled stomachs, and when that fails, needing cranes lowering them to their final resting place.

These blubby idiots just need to stop being idiots. They don’t need drastic interventions.

From a quick check on RTEs site, some are 13 stone, though I thought we used the metric system. They don’t need a team of fitness people and doctors, just relax on the rubbish. Easy.

For weight and height a lot of people still use the imperial system.

Depending on your height you might not even be overweight at 13 stone. If you want to loose a few pounds just step away from the plate

I don't watch them at all so no idea how good they are but are the big 3 soaps still doing any kind of quality television?
I'm asking about Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale?

My wife still watches them, it's pure shyte a child could write the scripts especially that eastenders such a depressing shower of cunce.

    Especially “Sammy Sausages”

An extremely annoying man tries his best to be serious but is woeful.

So what are the bells then?

Why does a state broadcaster need to get people to reflect?

You don't have to watch it.

Isn't there also a Mass broadcast on Sundays? Or has that been scrapped?

Still done on the radio as well.

It's not about the duration. It's about the fact that the state broadcaster still rams religion down people's throat and that's not their job.

And please don't say it's reflective and not religion as it's called the Angelus and has church bells.

People would find TV in muslim countries strange with a call to prayer on thm but this is no different.

They're not ramming religion down people's throats anymore then they are ramming sport down people's throats by broadcasting a match or comedy by broadcasting a funny programme.

I think the BBC also have religious programs on tv like songs of praise or whatnot.

    murpho999 wrote: »
I'm not offended at all. I don't get offended by TV nor do I hardly ever see The Angelus as I generally don't watch TV at that time but telling people to change the channel is a rude and invalid argument as I'm still entitled to have an opinion on it and I just disagree that RTE should be doing this.

As for the census, people often throw this out but I would argue that people just select Catholic for cultural reasons, just like they still get their kids to have communions and confirmations but it is changing and the delcine in numbers identifying as such in last 2 census has been huge as people start to let religion go as evidenced by huge growth in "no religion" category.

Regardless of the census Ireland is supposed to be a secular Republic and the state broadcaster should not be pushing religion on people.

They aren't pushing religion on people. If they were truly pushing religion on people then they would be rounding people up and forcing them into churches to pray.

I know it's about 40 years old but Fawlty Towers was a bit stale even after only 12 episodes but at least they didn't drag it out. (I looked it up to get the number of episodes and Basil is based on real-life hotelier Donald Sinclair who sounds even more entertaining).
