As said buying something that new go to a main dealer and get VW finance on it as they are generally cheaper than the banks. I have had a few VW finance HP loans all on used cars and highest I ever paid was 4% interest. Op as for HP finance the main thing to look at is how much interest you are paying on it over the life of the loan the less the better. The things that effect this are how much you are borrowing, for how long and at what interest rate.

If you don’t need the money from the sale of your car you would be better of putting it down as a deposit and then taking out the loan over a shorter period to minimise the amount of interest you pay.

I don’t personally look at the monthly repayment cost as an indication of whether the loan is good or bad I would purely look at how much interest you are going to be paying over the life of the loan.

Term wise 5 years is an awful long time to be paying a car loan and I’d try avoid that term unless you are the type that keeps cars for 10 years an even then. Ultimatey I would try aim for 3 years or less.

Looks like the 440i is sold already. Gone from Morrisons stock anyway.

It wasn't me anyway. Funny how Bolands did everything possible not to try and sell it last year.

55k including trade in, where would you go...loads of space, diesel, good to drive, plenty of power...and would you pay to go sideways with year as in pay to stay in the same year reg but move to a more expensive 4x4 when new.

    X5
    Q7
    Cayenne
    Velar
    Range Rover sport
    Something else?

The models you list, budget puts you in 162/171 stuff in Range Rover sport & Cayenne etc

181 in 25d X5s (fnck all power) and Q7s and 2.0 Velars (fnck all power)

That's presuming your trade in is worth what you hope/expect.

After 12 months a 162 Range Rover Sport will be 6 and out of warranty......... grim use of €55k unless you are really comfortable with the idea.

Cupra Formentor, one of the PHEV versions. They’re 204 and 245bhp and should fit in that price range

Yea that's what would worry me about the Range Rover, it needs to be rock solid reliable, there's only one on that list that doesn't worry me out of warranty. The one missing off the list is what we currently have we've pretty much decided to change only the other half thinks it's nuts not to go up a few years when changing.

personally I'd go for a strong-engined 3L X5 in black with oyster black interior, piano black trim if possible with msport+ pack.

Velar looks brilliant but its all about spec.
Dont know if it would be wise though.

Do X5's not have the potential to be complete money pits out of warranty?

Had a look around a new Tarraco FR DSG lately, its a seriously spacious car.

A Tarraco isn't in the segment he's looking for at all though to be fair.....

True I suppose. They are a nice machine in FR spec and in the right colour though I must say.

This used to belong to a family member. Spec is insane and it was babied. Mileage is a wee bit high but it would have been up and down the M20 and M7 mainly.

I looked at them 3yrs ago, I've had a good few BMW's and like them, I just found the interior build quality rubbish for the price, probably the one I looked at but scrapes all over the interior, plastics falling off, was very disappointed as I went with the intention of buying. I drove to see it in a 530 which was older but seemed a lot better put together. It wasn't that spacious either
Maybe it's just me but I think they dropped the ball for a few years the newer ones seem a lot better.

Had a lend of a new Tiguan from VW for a couple of weeks recently which I assume is pretty similar engine wise, it was well specifed, leather, moon roof etc. It's was a TDi now sure what power but it wouldn't pull your socks up.

Clean looking but boots too small. This car is going to be the load lugger. It's replacing an xc90.

What about the bigger Touareg, same running gear as the Q7?

New shape here just outside of your budget:

and the cayenne, would you take a fully loaded 171 cayenne over a 191 Touareg if your current car was 161?

Very nice. It was replaced with the new model. Surprisingly chuckable in the corners.

It's not as small as you think. The last time I drove it was to Dublin Airport and we had it loaded to the gills with suitcases. It has a huge storage compartment under the boot floor as well.

I know they are the same on paper but what about running costs? The Cayenne would probably have the wow factor having the Porsche badge but its 2 years older so would need a very good warranty. The same risk as the other ones you listed I suppose, if something goes wrong with any of those SUVs outside of warranty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,106 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

From what I read I've read the're very reliable. Probably keep it 3yrs, so would be covered for 2yrs warranty from the dealer.

Probably a bit left field as it’s not diesel but if your wife does a lot of urban driving maybe consider Lexus RX450h.
I have a pal with one and it is very quick and super smooth. Loads of space and spec too and never goes wrong, but rock solid warranty if it does. Only downside is on long trips if you enjoy the 6 cylinder petrol engine it gallops through fuel. If you’re doing a mix of urban driving though it’s easily as fuel efficient as a big diesel. There are plenty of loaded examples in budget.

Cheers carfan it's those ones I never thought of I'd like to see, keep them coming. I won't show her the Lexus as she'd probably want it, I'm not gone on the interior or the looks, something about the Lexus jeeps, I do like the cars and used to have an is220.
I was reading up on that RX450 and it seemingly does 40mpg @70mph that's respectable considering the engine size.
