How is the role and reach of Government not being discussed.

People get caught up on such bull**** non stories that miss the point.

Whatever your view on Covid and lockdowns we all agree that the state(across the world) has shot to centre stage in all of our lives in a way we probably never imagined. When corona began, we said we would never accept this here(Ireland, Europe, the "west") Well we have and continue to do. We have seen the power of government and politicians. As someone said any illusion that we had that politics was just a game has completely vanished with Covid. Government has literally stepped in and made the decisions on our behalf. They have decided to make the risk assessment for us and decided to protect us from ourselves. This was okay in the early days of March and April. It might even be okay now. But where do we draw the line? Are people just smart and rational enough to distinguish between the immediate risk of a virus and the more indirect consequences of impending climate catastrophe. I've said it before but what is stopping governments enforcing future lockdowns on grounds of climate risk? The amount of people who face catastrophe, famine and death due to this ecological disaster will make Covid look like a picnic. What then is stopping goverenrs depriving us of future liberties for the common good? If they did it once they can do it again.

Covid is just one example though. It probably is logical that the state intervene to protect its citizens in the face of limited health resources but to what end? Individual liberty needs to be held up as the highest goal imo. It can never be thought of as selfish or greedy to pursue it. It is what our modern civilisation is predicated on. This can never be thought of us as normal and any attempts to vilify people who become a little jaded and fed up with the restrictions imposed on them must be squashed immediately.

The government represents the people and the people want restrictions and lockdowns with consequences. Pretty simple and not note worthy.

Regardless of whether its right or wrong, there is absolutely no doubt its noteworthy.

For the best part of 10/11 months there has been zero cost benefit analysis done on these lockdowns. Now the government are saying there won't be any significant opening of the economy after March 5th. It's simply insane, absurd, crazy... and it's about time the Irish people stand up and say enough to this massive government overreach.

You seem to have answered your own question.

In the case of a contagious virus, it is "probably logical that the state intervenes to protect its citizens in the face of limited health resources".

There is no evidence to suggest that the same template will be applied to non-contagious problems. Moreover, there would be no public appetite whatsoever for that to take place. And if there is no public appetite, there is little political will to do so.

In other words, calm down.
