Were the Life Loans discussed again?

No, much more pressing: Prize bonds.

    No. I'm not joking.

Way better than mother & baby homes.

    That wouldn't be difficult though.

Actually petrified of needles so to speak believe it or not so to speak as they say.........

I remember trying to pierce a guy's ears (consensually ;) ) and it didn't end well.

I assisted twice holding firm de wrists of my friend in ICU and my mother after getting blood gases taken from wrist artery. Clamped down my own wrist after same procedure too. It was never questioned whether I might be squeamish. Younger doctors can be a little timid puncturing arteries.

I caught the end of today's show while doing a few jobs around the house.

The Cork fella married to the farmer must have been a p1ss take.

Surely, not even in Livelineland, would somebody have come on the National Airways and exposure their idiocy to such a degree.

This is the reply I got regarding my complaint about yesterday's programme and Joe's disgraceful handling of the 'discussion' for want of a better word.
I wish to acknowledge your email and thank you for taking the trouble to write to us.

Your email has been forwarded to RTÉ Feedback (cc’ed above) and will be noted in the weekly diary of comment from viewers and listeners which is circulated to all senior editorial and managerial executives including the Director-General and the Director of News and Current Affairs.

Could have saved them a lot of typing if they just said PFO

Good few 'jabs' on the 6:01 news there! Even after the sport with a few seconds to go they went back to fit one more in!

Yup. And after sending you the cut & paste generic email they filed your complaint here:

    Folks

When I heard the programme on Wednesday, I was seriously alarmed that such misinformation would have a number of disastrous consequences:

    1) It would frighten people who already have this product - who are now 10 to 20 years older and in the cohort that tends to worry.
    2) It would frighten people who should be considering this product now , from taking out this product.
    3) It would deter any other provider from competing with the existing product and bringing prices down.

You have nothing at all to lose by complaining to RTE in the same way as Yosser Hughes has done. If it's just Yosser's complaint, he will be regarded as a crank and it will be dismissed. But if there are a few complaints, the Complaints Committee will probably review the show.

And if they throw them all into the bin, you can go to the BAI. They will definitely reject your complaints, but it will force the senior management of RTE to respond to the complaint.

    Thanks Brendan.

Some of us have been complaining about Mr. Duffy and his interviewing “style” for years, with no effect. I’m absolutely not trying to deter anyone from writing a complaint - quite the opposite! I hope many do.

What you were subjected to the other day is a frequent occurrence on the show. The host takes a position that to most logical people is at odds with the facts and unreasonable, and then backs up this position by allowing a slew of callers to tell similar tales that are shall we say “loose”on facts. When someone calls in to offer a differing opinion they are rounded on by the host, laughed at (as he dissing you) and dismissed. Mr. Duffy allowed all of the callers to speak without interruption the other day, whilst he continually interrupted you before losing his temper (also a frequent occurrence) with his “guff” comment. He was polite to those who agreed with his position and incredibly rude to you. His tone was also unnecessarily aggressive and confrontational with you. Sadly, you’re not the first to be subjected to this behaviour. I hope you complain yourself btw.

Thanks again for standing up to him, I wish more would.

Did you formally complain to RTE? Did any of you go to the BAI?

I found the discussion here very, very funny. And I felt that it would have been great if some of those viewpoints were heard on the programme itself. It would have been funny, rather than the laughable items on Friday such as the "knock knock" "Who is here?" stuff.

I will complain. I will also ask if there were other callers to the show on the Thursday who disagreed with Joe and, if so, why were they not put through.

But if there were no other callers challenging the prevailing viewpoint, then the programme can't be criticised for lack of balance. But if there were callers waiting who were not put through, then they have a case to answer.

I would suspect I’m top of the “crank” list in RTÉ (well Lahv Lahn at least), tbh I’ve complained so often about Mr. Duffy over the years.

I have complained to the BAI more than once too, and had my complaints upheld.

I haven’t written a complaint re. the show you appeared on yet, but it’s on my “to do” list for today.

As for balance, seasoned listeners will tell you there isn’t even an attempt at balance on the show most days - it’s Mr. Duffy’s opinion and viewpoint or you get the “bad line” treatment. The biggest surprise for me and I assume most of us here is that you got on air at all as you clearly had a differing view to that which the host was trying to spin. It’s likely you were only let on as Mr. Duffy arrogantly assumed he’d be well able for you and to put you in your place, so to speak. He thinks he can outwit anyone such is his arrogance and ignorance.

As for the funny comments and humour, it’s why most of us here listen. The man is a buffoon, promoted and remunerated way beyond his talent or intellectual ability and we tune in to laugh at his incompetence as much as anything. It’s unintentionally hilarious.

Sometimes when a topic like this is aired on Liveline, it becomes clear that the calls are being orchestrated by a group of people who want to use Liveline to push their agenda. The objective here was to try and pressure BOI into offering a deal to the disappointed offspring who didn’t get the inheritance they were expecting.
My own mother took out one of those life loans in 2002. She got new windows for her house which were badly needed. She told us, (her children), what she was doing and we were all OK with it.
She was fully aware that interest was being charged but she didn’t care a jot. She was happy in the knowledge that she would never have to repay a cent in her lifetime. She died in 2012 . Her house was sold, as it had to be; her estate was to be divided equally between her children. The loan was paid off and nobody thought they had been ‘robbed’ or hard-done-by.
This why I got so annoyed at those callers complaining about being ‘done’ out of their rightful inheritance as they saw it.

    Roger

That would be a great contribution to make if they cover it again. You should email the programme.

It's one thing for me to speak about the theory that people were well informed, that the brochure was clear, that it fulfilled a great need in most cases, and that the house was sold and the loan repaid.

It's much more persuasive if it's actually someone who has used the product who says something like "If my mother had not taken out a Life Loan, I would have got a bigger inheritance, but she would have been living in a cold and drafty house for the last 10 years of her life."

I have emailed RTÉ before complaining about the imbalance in the treatment of topics on Liveline. The only time I got a reply was on the famous Versatis topic where Joe Duffy relentlessly and shamelessly promoted a particular pharmaceutical product by its brand name and ignored or dismissed any medical opinion that disagreed with his view.
I got a reply from Aengus stating that they were fully entitled to treat the topic as they did “due to the number of calls they received”.
I don’t intend to send any more emails. It would be a waste of time. Social media is the way to go these days, apparently.

The same very senior producer, Aonghus McAnally, joined the subsequently disbanded Facebook group "Patch Us Up", showing how very partial the staff in Liveline have been. This alone was material for complaint to BAI, but for some reason I didn't proceed with that.
