Technically it's a quarter of the "Bi-Annual" big prize but I know what you mean:D

Think it's about time to do a new guesstimate of winnings when the new rate is applied

    Should I feel more hopeful??????

Ah no ....Is it one prize of 250K four times a year i.e. €1 Million in total as opposed to €2 m? In my innocence, I thought they had split the €1m twice a year into four prizes to keep four of us happy!::eek::eek:

Had a look on the site. By Jesus, I know Ireland is often mocked for being archaic, and it’s state sites like this this that explain why. For anyone going to register for online purchases, don’t forget to bring your pen, printer, envelopes and stamps. Fcuk me they make it hard.

when i started in 2014 the rate was 1.25% now .35%,so three an a half times more chance of a win then(i think) big big difference!

Here is a list which I posted last August. I got most of my bonds in 2007 and 2010. I remember there being close to 10,000 €75 prizes every week, and that was when there were probably only half as many bonds in the draws as in recent times.

    2000 2.75%.
    2004 2.4%
    Sept 2007 3%.
    Jan 2012 2.25%
    June 2012 1.75%.
    Dec 2013 1.6%
    Nov 2014 1.25%.
    July 2016 0.85%.
    Aug 2017 0.5%.

    Feb 2021 0.35%.

That's disappointing, I'll have to seriously consider withdrawing now.

I had an old EBS book with about €16 which I decided to close. It was inactive for a few years, but not dormant. There was a small mismatch between their computer version of my address, and the address on the book. Various forms had to be completed, and new proofs of identity and address provided. It took six weeks and three visits to the branch before I eventually got my money.

Blame the lax regulations in previous times, which facilitated bogus offshore accounts and money laundering. Every financial institution is obliged to the impose the legislation which was brought in to rectify the previous failings. There was a time when a person could walk into a bank or Post Office and open an account with no documentation, not even proof of identity.

Since our discussion about the reduced number of €50 prizes this month, I have been keeping an eye on the State Savings site. In the past they introduced changes on Sundays.

Among wholesale reductions to interest rates, the notional interest rate on Prize Bonds is coming down from 0.50% to 0.35%. The two €1m prizes are gone, but there are four new €250K prizes. The rest of the prize structure stays the same. We will see in February the effect on the number of €50 prizes.

    https://www.statesavings.ie/prize-bonds

Was very surprised that this didn't happen on the October bank Holiday weekend. Long overdue, unfortunately.

I've taken a stab at the change in the number of €50 prizes, using the calculations from dub_nerd's spreadsheet on AAM, amended for the new prize structure. I have taken a baseline figure of €3,850,000,000 as the value of the total Prize Bond fund.

It looks to me as though the number of €50 prizes will reduced from 279,400 to 185,900, a reduction of 33.5%. So for every three €50 prizes you won in the recent past, you will stand to win two in the future. (These are approximations as the prize fund is based on the number of bonds outstanding and we can only guess at this number, but based on various posts by dxhound2005 I don't think it is too far from the mark).

My expected outturn in 2020 was 18.36no. €50 prizes (€900). The actually result was better at 24no. €50 prizes (€1,200). My expectation for 2021 based on the the new structure is 12.22no. €50 prizes (for €600)

Now let's sit back and await an outpouring of unasked advice on what we really should be doing with our money (precious metals, crypto currencies, various small time oil exploration companies, chocolate biscuits, the descendants of Arkle and God knows what else)

Oh oh, Prize Bond prizes being reduced in February....

    https://www.independent.ie/news/savers-to-be-hit-hard-as-interest-rates-on-a-string-of-state-saving-products-are-cut-40005177.html

"But from February the fund for Prize Bonds will be smaller for those who have them.

Instead of two €1m top prizes a year for those with Prize Bonds, there will now be four €250,000 top prizes a year. This is an effective cut of €1m in the top prize.

There will be 10 prizes of €1,000, and 10 prizes of €500. The remaining prize fund will be awarded in €50 prizes.

The new prize fund will be 0.35pc of the Prize Bonds total, which was €4.1bn at the end of last year. This works out at €143m in prizes."

I had an old EBS book with about €16 which I decided to close.

The Money Manager debit card that I have with them is non contactless. I would have thought that they would automatically replace the one I have with a contactless one when they became available.

I have re-run the numbers with the the baseline increased from €3.85m to the €4.1m stated in Charlie Weston's Independent article which vicwatson quoted. This increases the number of €50 prizes from the number I calculated previously. The revised numbers are as follows:

When compared to the .5% return previously offered, the number of €50 prizes will reduced from 304,400 to 203,400, a reduction of 33.2%. So for every three €50 prizes you won in the recent past, you will stand to win two in the future.

Well worth a listen back to this guy on the Whineline, he says we are losing 100,000 x €50 prizes per year or 2,000 prizes per week has been lost, which is effectively an extra €5,000,000.00 on top of the €1,000,000.00 they declared so it's NOT €1,000,000 as per NTMA.

But what is he claiming? That the NTMA lied or something? It is clear that the rate has gone from .5% to .35%. With about 4 billion euro worth of bonds currently, that's around 6 million euro less in prizes per annum.

Listening to that program fries my brain.

I can't find any NTMA statement or leaflet.

The statement on statesavings.ie is quite clear
What changes are being made to Prize Bonds?
There are two changes relating to Prize Bonds that take effect from February 2021. The first Prize Bond draw to reflect these changes will take place on 5th February 2021.

The interest rate applied to generate the Prize Fund is now 0.35%.
There are changes to the prize structure. See new structure below:
    Prize value Number
€250,000|Awarded in the last draw in March, June, September and December
€50,000|Awarded in each weekly draw other than when the €250,000 prizes are available
    €1,000|10 prizes each week
    €500|10 prizes each week
    €50|All other prizes*

*The number of €50 prizes will change on a monthly basis in line with the changes in the value of the Prize Fund.

He is probably quoting from third party websites which he misread, e.g. from rte.ie
Previously, the last weekly draws in June and December offer two €1m prizes - the change will see €1m wiped off the top prize fund.

    and from independent.ie
Instead of two €1m top prizes a year for those with Prize Bonds, there will now be four €250,000 top prizes a year. This is an effective cut of €1m in the top prize.

In any event, the "Top" prize "fund" decreases by €1m (although it's more correctly €1.1m) but the total prize fund decreases by €6.15m per annum. See my post in this thread where I calculate it.

Isn’t it comforting that our tv license pays for such a load of crap.
All those callers and Joe are very lucky to have nothing serious to trouble them.
Nobody forced them to buy prize bonds and they should spend a little of their free time reading the terms and conditions.

It's well worth listening back, but gosh what a crowd of whiners, one old dear complaining that the PB company doesn't tell her which bond had won, gosh they make life so complicated themselves, sign up to the Prize Tracker, login every Friday and just make life easy for yourself, €50 for me Friday 22nd and the €50euro was in my account on Monday morning, life made so much easier.

Okay I had a good feeling today that I'd win a €50 which usually doesn't happen but imagine my surprise when it wasn't a €50 but a €1000, Happy Days
    :eek::eek::eek::eek::D:D:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Congratulations, and welcome to the "K Club". I won €1,000 in Feb 2010, and again in Aug 2015. I posted about them on the thread before. Neither of those reinvestments have won anything.

Nothing for me today. Winner in Aruba, which is a first.
