These old vulnerable people, were bright sprightly people when it suits Joe

Correct, they were borrowing the money for home improvements, holidays, cars etc.. This is effectively the kids moaning that they've no money left from the family house. Borrowing 50 or 75k and not paying a penny back until you die basically is going to cost an absolute fortune, how could you not think otherwise?

As someone has already pointed out- "all businesses are predatory...", and exploitative on various levels.
If your "friendly" bank manager was to helpfully explain- "Just a word of warning, Bridie...If you neglect to make ANY payments for x no. of years, you're going to owe us a zillion euros..."
Compound interest, boys and girdles....no matter how "fair" that 4.3% sounds...will cripple the unsuspecting borrower.

    You said it Duffy

They didn't see it as a mortgage, they saw it as a trip to Australia.

In other words a large holiday loan that they never paid back.

    Now you've got it Joe.

RTE may supply endless free money but the banks do not.
