Yeah you're right, going down hills, it's sometimes best to use engine braking in a lower gear, but the main thing is to never allow the wheels to either lock or spin, cause when that happens, doesn't really matter what you do with the steering wheel, that car becomes a pinball. Most modern cars have ABS, so you're actually better off braking (gently) than allowing engine braking as this this reduces your control over wheelspin

Once the wheels are locked or spinning, your primary task is to figure out a way to prevent that, by either taking your foot off the brake, (extremely counter intuitive) or by taking your foot off the accelerator or holding in the clutch until the wheels regain some traction. (for manual transmission cars, not really sure what you would do in an auto cause I rarely drive them)

Whatever happened to that car, they were already going far too fast before they were picked up on film. That car definitely would have had ABS and traction control. They might have been over confident because they thought the car's safety features could break the laws of physics.

Looks like it wasn't long into its journey by the amount of snow still covering it. I'd say they just drove too fast and panicked when they realised they couldn't stop and had to enter the other lane,by which time they had locked their wheels and became passengers.

For that Merc Driver, by the time the video picks them up, they're pretty much already screwed. The poor decisions they made before cost them heavily. Luckily nobody was hurt physically.

What a morning that was, easily best snow day since 2018 although not much competition there. Also first proper Jan snow in just over a decade - 2010.
