Feels like the mood music from Europe has changed over the last couple of days. Talk of travel restrictions between states and the phrase "zero Covid" has been flown around a bit in the media. Even over here there's talk of a "two island solution"

    The plates are shifting lads.

Seem to be settling on PCR testing prior to travel and potentially a ban on non EU travellers/mandatory quarantine for those who arrive without a negative test. Level heads prevailing although I do agree with this somewhat increased level of restrictions for the next few months to give some breathing space to get the vaccine rolled out.

Preliminary stage but more crap news:
"Boris Johnson said: "In addition to spreading more quickly it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant, the variant that was first identified in London and the south east, may be associated with a higher degree of mortality."

I read 62% of cases here are of the UK variant.

I wonder if they have suspected this for a while, hence the unprecedented vaccination campaign in the UK amongst the most vulnerable groups.

    Virgin Media News so far....

    1. UK variant causing higher mortality rate
    2. Vaccine possibly not effective against new variants
    3. Gardai have stepped up their 5km fines complete with regional map of fine numbers.

Jesus Christ....how about starting the bulletin with some vaccine rollout numbers to help boost morale?!!

Because the vaccine numbers are equally as depressing.

10 out of 1000 for old variant. 13 - 14 out of 1000 for new. That is a big increase. he says he is unsure. Perhaps he should not say such a thing until he is fairly sure..

I can't get my head around this cavalier attitude towards such allegedly serious news, like it changes everything if it's true. He says a proportional increase in death risk for all age groups, well a 30-40% increase upon the existing risk for people over 80 means a very large risk of death now for that age group. Existing IFR over 80 has varied but all estimates put it at at least 5% but up to 15%.So from a 5-15% IFR for over 80 to 6.5/7% - 20/21% IFR for those age groups.

Think there's an incentive to alright with variants and trying to get cases down to vaccinate people.

World governments have been briefed. The death rate for the new strain is higher in the EU as well. It came from a mink farm in Denmark.

They are also slowly leaking us the news that the vaccine arent as effective as we thought.

    Watch this space I think.

The shift in tone from European leaders over the last few days has been pretty abrupt, by the relatively glacial standards of a pan European response to anything. There seems to a bit of momentum for something to occur.

We'll see how it pans out, but I suspect you might be underestimating the measures that could end up being part of a response.

If they're not sure of their data re variant mortality why are they announcing it? It'll be an enormously difficult to backtrack now if it isn't the case.

It's a very significant difference so I can't understand why they didn't dot the i's a little more first.

Also : Meanwhile, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said "there is evidence in the public domain" that the South African coronavirus variant "reduces by about 50%" vaccine efficacy.

Virgin media news just there was probably the most depressing news segment I’ve seen to date. I feel like sinking myself into a vat of wine and not coming up for air until August

I'd see that as a positive somewhat.

If the member states (collectively) start getting more restrictive on travel issues due to concerns about current or possible future mutations to the virus, we will likely try and follow + grasp the nettle no matter what "thorns/stings" are on it (NI, UK etc).

They (Irish government) do listen to the EU & watch what others in the EU are doing generally.

They know that they have ****ed up the vaccine order and there isnt a snowballs of everyone in the EU getting it by next winter. That's why there has been a big shift.

Better they say what they think now, the major problem with this pandemic is that every government has been too reactive rather than proactive. If we aren't sharing this kind of information early enough then we are in deep crap.

Slowly leaking the news that vaccines dont work.

That's Hancock being irresponsible. He's referring to papers in the public domain that suggest there may be vaccine efficacy issues with the SA variant. There may not be. We just don't know yet. Preliminary impressions aren't great though. He made it sound though like there's a definite problem. We. Do. Not. Know. Yet.

Edit. Looking into this further Hancock made the remarks in private the Daily Mail leaked them. Can't really blame him too much here.
