I looked through the Thursday NPHET updates from May. The lowest quoted R number I could find was "between 0.4 and 0.6". It does feel like we are doing nearly as well as April/May, which is a bit surprising given the restrictions are not quite as severe and there was (supposedly) a new infectious variant at play.

Might be masks. There was minimal mask wearing in april/may.

That's my recollection as well with a caveat that it was very hard to be sure of it at those levels.

It wasn't brought in until the end of June and Level 3. Up to then masks were largely scorned by NPHET.

Preliminary stage but more crap news:
"Boris Johnson said: "In addition to spreading more quickly it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant, the variant that was first identified in London and the south east, may be associated with a higher degree of mortality."

I read 62% of cases here are of the UK variant.

I'd be skeptical of this. Their testing like ours has had really high positivity rates. It's extremely difficult to infer mortality rates in those circumstances. This is because your sample of cases are already biased towards more morbid and severe outcomes to begin with.

Also, it's Boris. He's got one eye on saving his own skin.

It's reporatge from the scientists, though I know what you mean about BJ delivering it.

Tbh Boris has made such a cack up of the covid response that I automatically distrust anything he says

Maybe this is C19 weariness setting in, I've been very careful all year and nothing will change my behaviour until I'm vaccinated. It also doesn't really seem like increased mortality is reflected in the cases and mortality figures we've seen but again, just tired of this now

The amount of overpromising and underperforming by AstraZeneca is obscene. One calamity after another.

Countries informed through the week by AZ so doesn't look like it changes anything for the 600,000 doses we were told we're getting by AZ only 48hrs ago.

Thats 600k doses by the end of March, deliveries will also be monthly

Remember in December when Boris announced the new variant and a lot on here thought he was talking sh1t to save his own skin?

Yeah guess it might affect how many people can be vaccinated at a time to ensure there's enough for people to get their 2nd dose.

Not really, if you know there's a monthly delivery coming in you can plan fairly well for that. For example they know 600k doses by end of March so can work off that

I'm not sure if the 600k is guaranteed if overall supply is affected though. Full article here on it: https://www.ft.com/content/3dbfe495-5947-4dd0-9f43-5edc5e6d6dc7?segmentid=acee4131-99c2-09d3-a635-873e61754ec6

Why has the UK government declared it a slight increase in mortality rate when the figure they accompanied with the statement implies a 30%-40% rise in deaths in the at risk groups :confused:

600k is what was said on Wednesday to have been confirmed by AstraZeneca to Ireland, can't see that changing majorly in 48hrs.

Delivery details and quantities are agreed between each country and supplier

Austria seem to be saying they're also getting 600k, perhaps this might be the inital delivery much like Pfizer was the same across all countries.

Feels like the mood music from Europe has changed over the last couple of days. Talk of travel restrictions between states and the phrase "zero Covid" has been flown around a bit in the media. Even over here there's talk of a "two island solution"

    The plates are shifting lads.

    BBC explains it here,
1,000 60-year-olds infected with the old variant, 10 of them might be expected to die. But this rises to around 13 with the new variant.

It’s outside my 5km radius but I doubt that matters to the regular customers!

(My post wasn’t intended to poke holes in the credibility of your claim. It was meant to convey that some people might be delighted to hear that there is somewhere ‘open for business’ and be trying to find it. )

Might some of the increased mortality be due to the state of the NHS at the moment. If only those who are severely ill are been accepted for hospitalisation and care resources depleted, outcomes would suffer. A consequence of hitting capacity in the health settings at anytime, regardless of variant ?

10 out of 1000 for old variant. 13 - 14 out of 1000 for new. That is a big increase. he says he is unsure. Perhaps he should not say such a thing until he is fairly sure..

They know that they have ****ed up the vaccine order and there isnt a snowballs of everyone in the EU getting it by next winter. That's why there has been a big shift.

more likely their health service has collapsed and people are dying from lack of treatment.

Well, if he is then so is NPHET and many other countries who believe it exists!
