People also claimed that they'd never get away with another lockdown last May.

Here we are months later doing the same thing again. Well not quite as strict as back then, we've still spent 10 of the last 14 weeks at level 5 with all the indications we've another 6 weeks to go before anything is relaxed.

Kid yourself all you want but they'll decide what they decide and the vast majority will go along with it because there's no other option really.

The vast majority will not go along with it, we will never get down to the numbers we had the first lockdown because people are burnt out from it.

You keep saying that but it doesn't tally with how I find people reacting at the moment. If anything there seems to be, since Christmas, more of a realisation that we have to hold on until the job is done this time.

Yes big buy in right now but come march or April do you think people will still feel the same.

Amazing how much higher ICU capacity is in some countries compared to here. Czechia and Israel only have double Ireland's population but have had well over 1000 in ICU for weeks straight now without healthcare systems suffering deaths from lack of ICU treatment as far as I know. Lebanon 700 in ICU population 6.8 million. Israel 1150 COVID patients in ICU with a population of 9.2 million. Seriously impressive capacity

Okay I take it back looks like some of those ICU capacities are not great :pac:

I think there is a reasonably good appetite for another 4 - 6 weeks of heavy restrictions.

I am nearly 5 weeks since my last close contact outside immediate family unit. I am feeling it but can see a light at the end of the tunnel. We don’t like it but many people are living with it. For those who are struggling I can fully understand.

But the Govt. will need to work the narrative which gives measured hope. Talk about the big risks again, collective effort, point to vaccinations, protecting the vulnerable, one last push. Hearts and minds stuff.

The Media should be responsible as they are chasing every single vaccination story with venom and reporting ****e. This stuff has the risk of putting vulnerable people over the edge.

I've no idea how feasible it would be to get regularisation with Northern Ireland in order to pursue a zero covid strategy, but every day I pray it is because I'm not sure I have lockdown 4 in me in May.

I have good news and I have bad news.

Good news: We won't have lockdown 4 in May
Bad news: lockdown 3 will have only just ended.

It all depends on the numbers. People seem more in tune with the numbers now. We'll have to see what hospital, ICU, and Death figures are like.

Nobody can claim to know what the public's appetite will be like in a month because we don't know what the impact of the virus will be then.

I think that massively depends on the vaccination program. If people can see us getting to a place where we can start getting on top of this, i.e vaccines of a few hundred thousand a month at least, I think they will dig in. If we are still vaccinating relatively low numbers it's a different story.

We've all been fed up with it for months but it's not going to change anything. Whatever restrictions NPHET decide are required the government will go along with.

You can talk about buy in all you want but if places are closed and Gardai are still doing checkpoints then there's not a whole lot any of us can do.

It's a terrible time right now but it's better to make peace with the fact that most of this year will probably play out similarly to last year but hopefully won't be reimposing restrictions again come September.

We need a sustainable plan, most people realise this now. 2 to 3 weeks of normality if we open with a new strain and basically back to severe restrictions. Countries will eventually follow the NZ and Australia model. Vaccination hopefully makes it easier

What you mean make peace with it, your job is gone, your business is gone, just make peace with it, get over it. People locked away from the world for months but sure just get over it, stick on some Netflix there.

It's not about another option, I'm saying people will start to socialise again, parties will start again and numbers will go up.

Not his biggest fan but seeing as he's chastised in this thread a lot. George Lee actually had positives with today's figures. Pointing out lowest hospitalisation in fifteen days, case numbers and community referrals are dropping, HSE may be able to resume testing of close contacts.

Given that he was led into the commentary by a remark by the news anchor on the deaths. George acknowledged the grim situation but also pointed to the positives.

If my maths is correct that would mean that 1% are no longer alive.

You'd go up on a plane if you had a 1% chance of being splattered along the ground would you?
