Because covid was almost non existent in the Czech Republic until September

Can you not see the similarities? I'm not talking about the majority of catholics of which I'm one. It's the irony that they were quarantined from the community based on ideology or dogma which is disgraceful for a democracy in the 20th century.

Yet we can't even countenance the possibility of there being a mandatory quarantine on inward international travel (excluding the straw man hauliers which were unaffected with the UK ban) when they pose an extreme public health risk.

We need to start getting real. The main argument for there not being quarantine is that "it's not in our nature". That's correct for infectious diseases but not so for ideological diseases like mothers and babys born out of wedlock. Freedom of movement is great but it's a once in a hundred year pandemic.

It's not too late according to some. I've my doubts though

Seriously, SIPTU in the middle of that? Zero COVID is a non-runner so they should stop giving any oxygen to people pushing it.

it was almost non existent here too. They introduced masks in shops in the middle of the summer, pubs still closed. I went there and enjoyed my life without ANY restrictions.. everything was open, there were no signs anywere reminding me of this. I went to museums, pubs, I went swimming.. I even saw a live band. No social distancing or anything like that. Over here it's like living in the movie Groundhog day. Disgusting.

In March (late Feb if we are really, really lucky) it will be as you were but not fully for a good long while.

anywaaay... I heard a story where two guys work together as surveyors. One got sick (pain in joints, basically flu). No coughing though. They spend a lot of time together in a car. So the sick guy gets tested while the other self isolates. Now the interesting part, even though he tested negative they sent the other guy to get tested as well. Strange, if the test was negative why testing the other person? Waste of time and money.

We have an option to get tested at work. I'm not getting tested, why should I? Pointless.

Whats the point indeed, its just a casedemic

It was only a bad decision in hindsight. How was anybody to know it would take so long for COVID to begin circulating widespread again, a conservative approach was understandable at that stage, mere months after cases from the April surge had fallen to acceptable levels.

Doctors can clinically diagnose Covid even with a negative swab. There are basically no other respiratory viruses circulating at present.

Ah yes the Czechs, threw a party to say goodbye to COVID in May and ended up with one of the worst rates.

If the hospitals get overrun and there is a large spike in deaths then we will absolutely go for zero covid. As usual we will take action after the disaster.

Any how did having everything open work out for them.

It's still not going to happen and the hospitals will survive. We'll peak in ICU within the next 1-2 weeks. With ongoing restrictions and vaccines we don't even need to consider it.

The Czech Republic is a curious example to use considering they were the only country with similar numbers to ours during our period as "worst in the world" a week ago. Their death rate also dwarfs ours.

We weren't far off it for most of the last century. Any woman who had a child out of wedlock was quickly quarantined from the community to save the shame of the family in the eyes of the community and the Catholic Church.

I guess they thought that it was contagious.
Are you not allowed to get angry in a democracy. I know it's preferable not to but then your children's development is being impacted due to decisions to appease a business lobby, I think people have every right to be.

It's a disgrace. I suppose at least they are better off unlike some of their mothers being shipped off to internment camps to give birth in the name of the Holy Spirit / Catholic Church.

    The incongruity is startling.

Have you seen the death rate since October in your idealised Czechia?

    You need a reality check.

What we have allowed to happen with this virus in Ireland is like sacrificing literal lives to vested interest.

Excess deaths are also 40% higher in Czechia than the COVID deaths. Excess deaths in all of Eastern Europe are just stunningly high compared to Western Europe

That is exactly the government’s thinking, or hope. It’s not a plan though as it is based on unknowns. That way of thinking from the government has us where we are today.

Let’s hope things work out this time.

Well, it’s happened. My dad, late 60s, went into tallaght before Christmas for what we assumed was gonna be a week or so but he’s still there. Got the call this evening to say he’s tested positive. Unfortunately he’s a big lad, lots of health issues due to anxiety and depression so has basically been at home for 10 years. He quite literally didn’t leave the house in 2020. **** sake.

Jesus, some people would want to have a word with themselves. Some extraordinary rubbish altogether.

It’s kinda worrying that there are people operating in real life with minds that think its ok to post some of the stuff I’ve seen on here the past while.

Numbers in hospitals and ICU seem to be reaching a peak now.
Or at least the rate of increase has slowed down.

Of course there's other viruses going around, what about the 1000s of symptomatic people who tested negative for covid in the last few weeks?

Most people do get over it just fine.

My dad is in his late 70s and has so far escaped, but I still worry.
