That's a really uplifting quote. Someone should tell him we aren't testing close contacts.

It does wonders for your figures though

Do other countries test close contacts? UK don't, as far as I can gather. Hard to find data on other countries. Wouldn't make much difference to the numbers anyway, as anyone symptomatic gets tested, and we are down to average of 2.3 close contacts. Only 15% (max) of close contacts test positive. So 2.3 times 30% (asymptomatic) times 15% times 3000 cases only gives three hundred missed cases.

Is the weekend not usually regarded as low for test results?

Saturday swabs (Sunday's cases) not usually low, most of the swabs processed on Saturday will be test referrals from Friday. Sunday and Monday are typically low as fewer GP referrals on Saturday and Sunday.

A seven day average of 3602 cases per day. Last Sunday it was 6539.

Also an ongoing drop in new cases in the UK and the R number in London and the south east is reported to be 0.6

This thread has become a cesspit of negativity in recent days,

really depressing to read, so many people entrenched in their extreme views and unable to consider a middle ground

    unreadable now

Unfortunately this is the reality of things when you have a government that refuses to lockdown appropriately and in parallel to that stop the virus coming in.

Positives are the vaccine is being rolled out, but that MIGHT not be the answer to all our problems either.

Nothing to worry about so Merlin. I remember the last time you said that. Seriously lads we are on wave three. Ever the optimist and fair play to you. I really hope we are not posting this time next year.

You are generally well meaning but you've done your fair share of undermining public health officials in the fair weather........ Do you still think he should apologise given the current situation? How much damage did the December policy do? Kids education and functioning hospitals should be the priority in any democracy.
Absolutely. It's pretty clear level 5 had no impact on the reproductive rate. Level 3 plus did all the work. That's what the data tells us. A shocking error by NPHET which has done a huge amount of unnecessary damage. And, not for the first time in his career, no admission of a mistake or an apology from Dr Tony.

Sooo frustrated after watching the news and telling people not to walk on a crowded beach. For god sake the HSE guidelines are15 mins face to face contact or two hours in the same room. How does it make sense to say that on one hand and the other hand oh your grand your not a close contact if it wasn't in an emclosed soacefir two hours.
    Sooo tired of it.

And just further on that, it is notable to me that the R number has dropped to that level in an environment that is much busier than that in Dublin. People here complain about the crowds in the parks and outside the coffee shops with no social distancing and big groups meeting up. Well, it’s nothing even close to London crowds and lack of social distancing right now (I’ve experience of both over the last few months).

So it’s a positive for me that the R number can still drop even with this kind of behaviours

I didn't say that there was nothing to worry about.

On the post you dug up from November, the data from October/November shows that level 5 made very little difference compared to level 3. Imposing restrictions which are severe should only be done when necessary. Doing otherwise reduces compliance and public support. The more severe the restrictions, the more the pent up desire to meet people etc when the restrictions are lifted.

By the way, I said on this thread that they shouldn't reopen eateries in December, I thought it would lead to carnage, and it did.

And I'm fully in favour of level 5 being needed now.

Here's a strange one for RTE and following guidelines. Nicola Coughlan, great actor but beside my point here, was on LLS Friday night in studio, and mentioned going home to Galway after. Not withstanding the interviewer barely asking her anything about her acting and recent success, preferring his question round of misery, what was essential about the interview and her appearance in studio? Messaging has been way too mixed here.

On the 19th Dec For the All Ireland RTE Sport were reporting fan reactions live from pubs in Dublin and Mayo. Unusual to eat dinner watching a match, but all guidelines were followed I'm sure. And someone mentioned pages back another report a week or two ago, about teenagers go-carting (elite sport) a few news reports after the Covid reports.

Messaging has been way too mixed from RTE, and fatally damaged by their own breach.

Generally I would have considered RTE good for news, but they've lost a lot of credibility in my eyes during this pandemic.

Separate thought but does anyone know whether the agriculture minister was in Dublin or Donegal when he got his positive test result before Christmas?

Poland don't test close contacts never did.
Mandatory 14 day quarantine police check at least one a day with a visual visit.
What's app contact at random times.
If you develop symptoms or become ill for what ever reason you will receive a test and any medical attention needed.

Shmoke I would agree with you about rte.

I sent in a complaint that time they sent Catriona Perry up to Derry when numbers there were high. Like wtf?

She was interviewing people indoors in church with no mask then heading back down here.

How many crew had to travel with her?

Could have been done by local rte correspondence in area.

A joke + they are total hypocrites. They take doomsday approach every day about numbers + people meeting up but do whatever they want themselves like pointless interviews in Level 5.

This is the reality for many parents.....
Someone should be held to account.
Around one third reported a deterioration in children's speech and language and communication skills

I'd just like to say I'm sorry for making people feel bad about what they said in December. I didn't know it was against the rules and I'm very happy that the posts have been deleted. Nobody should be faced with the belittling of public health figures that went on then uninterrupted . It's just not cricket.

Doesn't take away from people's anger though or what is coming down the tracks.

It’s positive that they are lower than last Sunday all over Europe. In some cases substantially. Will still take some time to lead to a fall in deaths, but clearly on the right trajectory across the continent

To be honest, I think we'd be in a better position if the government had listened less to "people's anger". That way there may have been fewer risky decisions in the hope of appeasing the loudest of the public.

I mean this against general public anger BTW, not specific issues like the child development ones you're raising.

Hope you don't mind me asking - but did the Covid cause any issues with your Asthma?

SIL had asthma and is fairly worried about catching it. Is there a higher risk with it?

For a couple of days I was a bit shorter of breath than usual/using more inhaler/medication than usual, but it passed.

Are you not allowed to get angry in a democracy. I know it's preferable not to but then your children's development is being impacted due to decisions to appease a business lobby, I think people have every right to be.

It's a disgrace. I suppose at least they are better off unlike some of their mothers being shipped off to internment camps to give birth in the name of the Holy Spirit / Catholic Church.

    The incongruity is startling.

What is it you want exactly?

fugging gym to be open, without having to book some stupid sessions. Following arrows like an idiot. Sauna working. not much to ask for.

I used sauna in Czech republic in the summer, I went swimming too without booking anything, just showed up. I feel like in prison in this country.

You poor thing. Having to adhere to a few rules and still get to go to the gym? Sure sounds like Mountjoy all right.

I'm sure there's a more suitable thread for those comments.
It's like the Cervical Check Scandal all over again on this thread, despite it being the a Covid thread.

Can you not see the similarities? I'm not talking about the majority of catholics of which I'm one. It's the irony that they were quarantined from the community based on ideology or dogma which is disgraceful for a democracy in the 20th century.

Yet we can't even countenance the possibility of there being a mandatory quarantine on inward international travel (excluding the straw man hauliers which were unaffected with the UK ban) when they pose an extreme public health risk.

We need to start getting real. The main argument for there not being quarantine is that "it's not in our nature". That's correct for infectious diseases but not so for ideological diseases like mothers and babys born out of wedlock. Freedom of movement is great but it's a once in a hundred year pandemic.

It's not too late according to some. I've my doubts though

anywaaay... I heard a story where two guys work together as surveyors. One got sick (pain in joints, basically flu). No coughing though. They spend a lot of time together in a car. So the sick guy gets tested while the other self isolates. Now the interesting part, even though he tested negative they sent the other guy to get tested as well. Strange, if the test was negative why testing the other person? Waste of time and money.

We have an option to get tested at work. I'm not getting tested, why should I? Pointless.
