On a lighter note. Today was Day 14 of isolation for me. I was like a hare out of the trap and went for a lovely long country walk. I was double masked + face screened. On a very narrow boreen, 4 x 15/16 year old lads approached me, walking the width of the boreen. I waited til the last minute, when they weren't moving single file and I said " Lads, will you move over there, I'm a close contact. The 4 of them nearly jumped into the bushes :).

No offence or anything but if this story is a ‘lighter note’ we are indeed in dark times.
Teenagers out Innocently walking confronted and threatened with Potential infection in the wide open air of the countryside.

and it's not till day 15 that isolation ends and ok to go for a walk.

    Was thinking the same

    Nothing "light" about that post

Had I been one of the people to have met this poster, I would have gone home and worried about the encounter

The hive mind on Twitter suggests that "going for burgers" was a cover in case they were stopped. They drove 80km to pick up drugs.

That makes a lot more sense, especially given that Donnybrook is not known for especially tasty burgers.

Lol I feel so naive. Couldn't get my head around somebody driving that far for a takeaway

I’d be more concerned about the risk the four 15-16 year olds posed to each other than the risk from someone who was alone, outside, has been self-isolating and was double masked and face screened.

I would meet that ‘close contact’ on day 14 outside in that situation before I’d meet the four teenagers!

How is Belmullet so bad? It's in the middle of nowhere?

I think because it's in the middle of nowhere people may have felt an even stronger desire to travel home to there for Christmas.

Anecdotally, I've heard of people making extra effort to get back there for the All Ireland.

I've driven further for kanum Thai, although this does sound like a terrible cover story.

    HSE operations report 14/1.

Covid cases hospitalised as of 8pm 1785 - increase from 1733

The rate of increase does seem to be slowing, thank goodness.

Family in Belmullet and Castlebar. Apparently one of the hotels had a large event for the All Ireland final which didn't have a huge amount of social distancing. Its spread like crazy since then really. 5 members of my family have been tested (one is a nurse), all came back negative thankfully and are rural Belmullet. One of the kids said 7 of her friends have it.

An event like the above before Xmas, then people meeting their families over Xmas/New years, its not really surprising to see the numbers now.

The missus was watching Operation Transformation where one of the lads was a close contact so couldn't get out to exercise. The doctor said he was fine to go out as a close contact once he maintained his 2m social distancing.

Bizarre stuff from RTE allowing that out last night

It's mad any semblance of a decent sized event is hazardous in the extreme with this thing.

f*ck sake with that type of contradictory info no wonder numbers are the way they are

Self-isolation (stay in your room) means staying indoors and completely avoiding contact with other people. This includes the people you live with. If you live with other people, stay on your own in a room with a window you can open, if possible.

I was thinking the same thing!
Also felt they were standing bit close without masks, presume it was 2m or wouldn't be on TV but with the way things are could have given a lot more distant or even Kathryn in a different room.
I was also wondering did they have trips to hairdresser too 😆

A close contact is only required to restrict their movements. Not self isolate.

No need for them to be in studio at all tbh, hardly an essential journey but I suppose people need entertainment. I genuinely would imagine RTE are playing by the rules on set after the incident at the leaving party but given the advice by the doctor last night, nothing would shock me at this stage with RTE

I think we broadly agree to be honest. One thing is for sure we seriously as a country need to make health care the number 1 priority when this is all over. Invest seriously in improved facilities and staffing instead of just management.

Haha, very funny. When this is over we're going to be so broke if anything the health service will be further diminished. And its not like throwing money at it has done anything in the past anyways.

I checked, close contacts can go out, so I retract my critics of the person who was a close contact

You can still go outside to exercise by yourself as long as you keep 2 metres away from other people.

Close contacts aren't required to self isolate. Its restricted movements. They can still go out for exercise so whatever was broadcast isn't wrong in saying the person was allowed to go out for exercise.

As a close contact you are allowed out to exercise.

Not sure what the issue is?

I was a close contact . I scoured the recommendations and read them five times
A close contact is definitely allowed excercise while staying 2 metres from other people . Its in black and white on the HSE site

There are no direct flights anyway to the UK or Ireland. So not exactly hard for anyone from S America to bypass the ban. Like if someone transits through Frankfurt and doesn’t volunteer that they started in Rio, how is anyone supposed to know

The ban is hardly worth it

Mandatory quarantine for 14 days, no ifs no buts - fcuk back to where you came from if you don't like it. Even if you're Irish.

The "lighter note" was intended as a distraction from the grim state we are in. The teens I met out walking innocently were not 4 brothers. I did not threaten them. I joked with them.

What I take as good is that they scattered when you informed them as to your status. At least they have a bit of common sense :)

That's the point I was trying to make. I isolated for 14 days, as a close contact. Luckily, I haven't picked it up from my positive close contacts. I was trying to protect myself and the youngsters I met.
