Checked my avant card and it shows location Ireland for the transaction.

Same for me, transaction has been posted as Ireland. Hope that means that a) there will be no additional taxes or charges applied and b) I get my order, ie it doesn't get cancelled for having stacked multiple discount codes.

If all goes well, I'll be delighted with my bargain, thanks Mr_edge!

ETA customer service told me that there would be a delay on shipping, c. 12 days as they have had a deep clean in their warehouse.

Rang Cross talked to a gentleman named Steve he said same thing warehouse had a covid outbreak hence the delay , orders being processed and they use DHL for delivery and as regards vat dutys etc he said price you see is price you pay :-)

Out for delivery today. €56 order

Your DHL Express shipment with waybill number 539****** from AT CROSS LTD has arrived in the country and cleared customs. There is import duty/tax and an advance payment fee due on your shipment. The amount is EUR 14.84.

Cross better refund UK VAT then. My order is for a similar amount. Did you stack discount codes?

I'm getting nothing when I try and check order status. https://www.cross.com/cr_en_ie/order-status

Money hasn't been refunded to paypal though.

I paid online via DHL link sent by sms and email

Did you get a breakdown of how the amount was calculated?

Was it VAT at the rate in Ireland and did they add any additional "processing" charge or fee?

    Thanks for the info.

The payment deferment risk charge is a bit steep at €5 to put it mildly!!

I'm going to reroute my order of €66 to my sister who lives in County Antrim and I'll pick it up after the end of the current lockdown.

Yeah I'm surprised at that. For DHL it is normally €14.50 or 2.5%, whichever is the larger value.

I used 4 discount codes stacked. Got a tracking number today due for delivery on Monday. Order was for about 33. No mention of customs charges yet, I assume that will happen when it arrives in Ireland.

Also just checked PayPal and money taken, no sign of a refund so seems to be still coming.

For those that received delivery info, when did you order?

I received order confirmation on Jan 5th but zero Comms since. I can't log in either and the password reset doesn't seem to work so I can't view any updates via the site.

    Thanks.

Just received email saying that my other orders from cross are with DHL and due to be delivered Monday. Nothing showing on my credit card yet. A bit weird as I definitely put in the right details.
As already mentioned I was not charged any extra when first order was delivered today. Will wait and see if charges are processed over the weekend.
    All orders for under €22.

    Looks like it was cancelled.

Bit of a joke of a company, my order appears to be cancelled, I've received no notification if it has or not, the confirmation number is not being recognised, I didn't create an account. It's one of those things you remember when a company goes under for being run in to the ground, good riddance.

The order lookup function has never worked for me..

Also spoke to a guy called Steve in their CS dept. He couldn't check my order due to an IT issue so not sure what the status is.

Also mentioned the Covid outbreak causing warehouse delays of up to a week.

Ordered on 01/01. For those who have received shipping confirmation, when did you order?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,160 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

Those who've gotten delivery confirms, did you buy engraved pens? Hardly worth cancelling those orders.

My order is due to be delivered on Monday. Just got a text saying there’s customs duty of €12.64 on a €44 order. Sod that. I’ll be calling Cross.

Bit of a sharp practice, the site presents itself an the Irish version of the site, there is no mention of any additional charges or fees.

If something like that happens, can you simply refuse delivery at your door...

I assume cross will send it regardless, as the customs had nothing to do with them

Just got email for customs of 12.08 on an order for 33 ish. I've paid it as I still think it is a good deal for the 3 pens and refill pack I ordered.

EDIT no engraved pens in my order

    Don't give up hope.
My money reverted to revolut last night.
Just now cross took it back and I got an email to say my order has shipped.

Going to be hit with duty but I'll call cross to get a vat refund when it happens.

It's a good deal either way

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!...Just got confirmation my order has shipped. It's a really nice pen so feck it even with customs charges it's still a bargain but I will be complaining to them to refund the UK VAT. The website is too confusing being a .ie and showing exact Euro pricing despite the goods are being shipped from UK, it wasn't an option I selected to get Euro pricing, if it was being shipped from UK it should be by default GBP priced for clarity.

I got saddled with a customs fee of E12.12. I’ll pay it (order was 2 pens totalling 40 quid) but it’s a lesson learned. Thanks Brexit...

At least DHL don't seem to be charging their usual admin fee. It's 2.5% of the the taxes and duties with a 14.50 minimum charge. Wonder are they waiving it for the minute for packages from the UK so they don't have to deal with a load of complaints over it.

They are a shower of incompetents I got passed around departments with phone calls and emails before when I was over charged by around €15. Was told it was the other departments responsibility passed back and forth finally told it would be rectified. It wasn't more back and forth then told that customs had set the amount and they couldn't change it. I gave up at that stage it just wasn't worth the time and effort.

It would seem to me that anyone who got the stacked discounts across multiple products did pretty well. If I had bought 2/3 pens for €45 and the customs was only €12, I'd reasonably happy with my purchase.

It is disappointing though that, if you're buying through a specific Irish "website" that you can get hit with customs.

In fairness to Cross, I know from my first week back in work that a huge numbers of businesses are really struggling with the exact same issue. The rules were only finalised a fortnight ago. Whats frustrating is the Brits spent years banging on an about a deal/no-deal Brexit. After all the fluting around, it seems there was no deal! All those negotiations were a complete waste of time. EU should have just let them go last Jan.

I didnt know when I ordered where they were coming from, nor did I check so I am in the same position as most, not from a position of forsight. But I dont believe we should be blaming cross for our oversight.

The website we all went to was https://www.cross.com/cr_en_ie/

If it was www.cross.ie I would agree with you, and it should have been clearer that it was not coming from Ireland.

The fact that it is a .com website, and with the en_ie at the end, this says that we are viewing a section of a website, aimed for our country, rather than an Irish website.

I think it is a lesson to us going forward, to check where things are coming from after brexit, and to be more aware if we are on an irish site, or international. I'll admit I didnt look, I hopefully will next time.

    Examples

    https://www.next.ie/en

    https://www.arnotts.ie/

    https://www2.hm.com/en_ie/index.html

    https://www.nike.com/ie/

I would expect the first 2 to be irish based, the second 2, probably not.

NOTE I do not know if any of these examples are/are not shipping from Ireland, just noting the difference in the web address.

I am not saying .ie means dispatched from Ireland. But you could understand consumers having an issue with a .ie website not being clearer.

We can all use this as a relatively cheap test and lesson on post brexit online shopping, and we need to do a bit more homework before ordering in future, especially for large value items where it could sting a lot more.

Although, had it been a large value, I probably would have tried to get the UK vat refunded from cross, but for what I got charged, Im not going to, as I still feel I got good value.
