Germany is extending it's harsh lockdown until 31st of January. Since the 16th of December, schools, most shops, restaurants and bars are closed.

We on the other hand are still mulling over extending the school closures, despite being in a significantly worse way.

Is that confirmed anywhere? As far as I can tell, Germany is still negotiating with itself.

Lucky you but I don't think it's a good idea to base our public health strategy in a pandemic on the fact that you never got sick? It's not about YOU. If you are selling any supplements that might interest me though.

I was just giving an edge case example. Anyway, I can sell you some of my plentiful supply of antibodies, t-cells etc for 1 million dollars

I got it from the Guardian live feed

We're at a different stage than Germany, there's no real comparison yet.

Germany are panicking because a strong improvement in numbers following their lockdown appears to have stalled around October levels, which is the equivalent of 1,000 cases/day for us.

We're two weeks behind them, so we won't know until the 18th or so whether we see the same stalling effect, or if we will pull back to where we were in late Novembr.

It's seems paradoxical to tell people to stay at home except for exercise and grocery shopping when you still have places doing takeaway pints and the likes.

Is there any chance they shut down construction for a couple of weeks with schools.

The Covid tracker app displays as a graph daily case numbers to date.

It use to display cases in increments of 100’s but has now been updated to show increments of 1000’s.

Way things are going that might have to change to 10,000’s.

Seamus, in the last few days we've had the highest incidence rate in the world.
Germany, even at their worst, never had numbers like we do now.

If Germany are struggling to get numbers under control with a harsh lockdown (that spanned Christmas day too), then why would we feel we'll be able to get where we need to be with lighter restrictions?

Check out the list of countries on the left. Guess who's winning.

Our daily cases per capita are ~4 times theirs.. That our restrictions should be at least as "harsh" seems reasonable.

Do you honestly believe that this is the only coronavirus that won't reinfect? Again we are not even a year into this and it is shutting down economy and schools AGAIN. Here's what other coronavirus' look like on a longer term.

It's a bit more complicated than that in fairness. Reinfections from common cold coronaviruses tend to be shorter in duration with a shorter shedding period and milder symptoms (if any at all). Immunity from infection and immunity from severe infection are two different things. I don't think anyone realistically expects the former to be long term but there is some evidence that the latter is.

I reckon we'll have a lockdown until after Paddy's Day.

And I think that's the right thing to do. But then again, I still have my job so it's easy for me to say that.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Will it be this afternoon when they release yesterdays swab results?

Yeah, usually sometime after 2pm, but could easily be 4pm or so

Probably right with regards to hospitality but IF things improve significantly perhaps they will reopen retail, and leisure/gyms before that? Maybe even barbers and hairdressers

Infections with Sars-CoV-2 also tend to be milder in those with recent common cold coronavirus.

Reinfections over time will eventually see Sars-CoV-2 becoming the 5th common cold coronavirus. The vaccine will accelerate the process

The government isn't quite as mad as you think. Schools will not be opening for quite some time, there is no doubt about it. The leaking will start today or tomorrow, and announced midweek I would guess.

They should be creative with schools. try and get the exam year students back at least so they don't miss out on proper exams like last years pupils did.

Also ensure all students are properly schooled online and that they are not roaming the streets causing more spread than if they were at school.

Yet we had our minister for special education today on a radio interview confirming she fully expects schools to open as normal on the 11th

Thats the job of a good parent not a school.

I find it hard to believe she actually makes any decisions herself of any consequence.

Edit: Actually meant Minister for Education, but it can apply to both.

Yes, the Communications strategy is bonkers but there is no way schools can open with infection rates as they are. NPHET will advise them not to open schools and that will give them the cover they want. I'd be surprised if the CMO hasn't already issued the letter

Jaysus, This confirms my theory that Ireland has the best Christmas in the world......ever. We should have been doubly cautious.
