I don't understand the price debates going on too long part? Throw whatever money they want at it. There should be no debating on it.

That's not really fair, you have to fix a price that's fair for each nation and make sure that developing countries can compete. Which they aren't doing, the only ones willing to sell to developing countries so far are China with their Sinovac vaccine and the UK's Oxford vaccine

Exactly and the sooner we accept this the better, it's the same for nearly other aspect of life so we need to get on with it and stop moaning like 10 year old girls about something we can't change.

So what’s the answer then when hospitals are full ? “....Tough sh1t Mary, I know you had a heart attack but ICU is full of covid patients, what can ya do eh, them’s the breaks.....”

Of course we can change behaviours, IF the political will is there to do it.

The main thing I take from these numbers is how widespread covid actually was in the first wave back in March/April. We had similar figures in hospital but the daily figures were quiet low.

Yes, low testing back then and had to show symptoms to get tested. The real case numbers back in March and April was huge.

People could submit a picture of their loved-ones? Like an obituary-style message?

It was done during the summer before the news. And on the late late etc

You mean like the lungs on the side of cigarette packets or the real life stories on road safety ads?

Well I don't drive a car because I'm so afraid of knocking someone down to the sound of Samantha Mumba so they do work

This is such an incredibly odd suggestion. Use the names and faces of dead people to scare / guilt people into compliance?

If we're going to go down that road should we do the same for tobacco and alcohol related deaths?

The difference between tobacco and alcohol and Covid is that Covid is an infectious disease and there are direct societal consequences to its spread. Apples and oranges

Hard though when you have to go into work, like I do tomorrow and face the public, some of whom could be infected and they may not even know it themselves or care......

They should consider naming the people who die on a daily basis - its far too easy to discount "x number of deaths" by saying ah sure it was just some auld one who had underlying conditions.

Would be a different story of we were shown a picture of Mary from down the road

It would do more harm to the issue as it would be clear the group of people it is harming most.

I recommended a place to buy coffee for someone earlier in this thread.
I got quoted and I'm getting the feeling that they think I'm trying to encourage someone to break the 5km restrictions :D

Some of you people need to leave the basement and stop reading what you want into things :D

Then they dont get the vaccine. We are waiting on almost 100 consent forms to be returned to us. Will be interesting to see how many families will give consent.

That's terrible. Is that in a nursing home ?
Guess things handled differently when critically ill.

The people I talk to who refuse to comply have somehow missed all of the news. They don't realize that young people can die of it, or that long covid exists. There ARE stories like this around. E.g. this healthcare assistant that died Xmas Eve: https://www.rte.ie/news/dublin/2021/0101/1187231-healthcare-worker-death/

There's at least one story like this a week on RTE but the covid-deniers intentionally avoid anything that makes them doubt their world view

Why don't we stop all crime so, we can change certain behaviours and we are trying our best I believe but some posters in here expecting 100% compliance is fairytale thinking.

I haven't been able to go to a café or see my parents since March, and that's true for most people, so it kind of feels like you are gleefully rubbing it in!

I think we need to put all this in context. Level 5 restrictions were introduced last week. We should see those having an impact soon. The vaccine will likely be rolled out to nursing homes etc so we probably wont see the same high death rate we seen in the first wave.

I think the biggest worry is hospitals being under pressure over the next 2-3 weeks but don't forget the flu isn't around this year so it quiet normal for hospitals to be overrun in January. Dozens of people waiting on trolleys etc. It is bad but we are likely to be at the peak next week. Then it will fall back.

Sky News suggesting that lockdowns as we know them don’t seem to be working anymore against the new strain. So what now?

Not really. I just saw two people talking about making coffee at home so thought I'd recommend a product they may like.

If some people haven't gone out or seen anyone since March, that's their own thing, their own decision. I can't help that.

You are wilfully trying to wind people up! You only need 10% of people to mess it up for the 90%. We have to try to try not further exacerbate the undue and unprecedented stress that our health system is under. This involves compliance. Otherwise, we all suffer

    I hope you are right!

I don't think it will peak till a little over 2 weeks after new years eve

and some hospitals are already at capacity

Also NI were asking us to take some of their patients, imagine if we had held the line, we could have saved the lives of the people who NI hospitals are having to turn away this week, not only that, we will probably have to turn away people too.. hopefully not.. but

Restrictions need to change. I work for a well known coffee company that is currently doing take away only. All of us staff are on top of each other with no separation whatsoever and when busy there can be a huge amount of people congregating in the cafe waiting to order or collect their drinks.

Takeaway only should be order online and collect at a hatch, not allowing people to be in the premises congregated together. And that’s not even getting started on how there is no separation between members of staff whatsoever.

If lockdowns don't stop you from getting the new strain, if nothing stops you from getting the new strain then, nothing else for it.

Most crime can be stopped when enough resources are thrown at it, there’s countless examples of that down the years. Look at what the Gardai were able to do in Limerick city a few years back.

Who is expecting 100% compliance anyway ? Nobody expects that, but it should be a lot more than it is now. Meaningful consequences would help - obviously the vast majority wouldn’t be affected but if examples were made of some, it might give pause for thought.

No it won't fall back. Hospitalisations will continue to grow for long after cases peak.

This is nothing like a normal year. Our hospitals are going to be so consumed with covid that little else will take place.
