yup, due to the amount of selfish morons in the country level 5 is the only thing that works unfortunately. a fully compliant level 3 would be perfectly capable of handling this thing.

No it wouldn't, but I suppose its easier to think its somebody's fault than realise cases have risen at every point we haven't been in lockdown.

    No swab data today.

    From Gavan Reilly on Twitter:
“For people wondering: data on how many tests/swabs are positive doesn’t get uploaded on Sundays. They upload two separate 24hr data updates (as opposed to a single 48hr update) on Mondays instead.

Means we’re flying blind today as regards extent of any backlog in official cases”

With the figures up in a heap, and an increasing backlog, do we really have an accurate grasp of where we really are in terms of the spread of the virus..??

I guess we can expect high numbers, up to and around the 15th to the 20th of January.... This will take care of most of the Christmas & New Year craic should it not...??

Then, we should see a steady decline in the numbers, assuming that most punters are skint and somewhat abiding to the L5 restrictions.

So.... The upcoming surge of new cases will mainly be attributed to damage already done (Xmas shopping / Xmas gatherings etc). Why do we need to pull the trigger on schools, work, non essential retail & 5k limits so soon....??

I get the need to protect the HSE - But that churn of milk has already been spilt, we can't prevent the results of that scenario impacting the hospital admissions.

But from January 1st, most of the messing & hugging will have been done. Most will settle down again to combat the spread of the disease.

Is there really any further need to debate further restrictions until we see how things are going after the 20th January? The restrictions already imposed will hardly bear fruit before then.

If schools open on 11th thats 1 million people on move and mixing so if that happens with community transmission currently so high and track and trace a disaster not a hope in hell of numbers dropping. Even if kept schools closed for another week to try and get over Christmas effect it would make a big difference.

Yup, my take on things too. But we appear to be in the 'optimistic' category.

    I wish :)

I think that we are all with you, in the sense that we cannot wait to move on!

In the interim, we have to be sensible and salvage the current situation. We will all have to make sacrifices, with respect to our social and daily lives. We have a duty not to spread the virus. And unlike March of last year, we have an end in sight; there is a vaccine coming soon. Hopefully, we can mitigate the consequences of this wave. It is only a short run to the finish line (3-6 months).

Ironically, that post comes across as very highly strung.

    Let's move on.

    Agree.

Why are you calling people names here ?
Was that what your former persona did before you got banned/ rereg ?

    You'll find I haven't called anyone names.
I never got banned, close a couple of times ;)
I have re-invented myself many times. I usually close my account at 2000 posts.
I am afraid my previous personas are none of your business.

Have you a mortgage? Family to feed ? Bills ?

I take your point but not every one can just take the same approach as you will.

People fear if they don't go in they will lose their job.

Not everyone is in the same boat

I tend to get chest infections with colds, not always but I've had bronchitis a few times in my life. I don't think it's worth the risk.

Don't wish time away. Make the most of it. Today was a smashing day. Heavenly. There are many things we can achieve during lockdown.

Oh right, which rural area is that out of interest?
Are cyclists staying within 5km too? How do you know nobody is driving somewhere else to do their walks/runs?

It's a rural area. We know all our neighbours and see them walking the roads locally. We speak to each other as we pass houses or they pass us. It's not hard to see the increased numbers staying locally and, believe it or not, it's a significant topic of conversation.

I am intrigued. You wish to keep your identity private? Maybe because I am a nobody, I don't understand, but what's the big issue with people figuring out who you are? Also, why 2,000 posts? What is the rationale? Providing you keep the conversation generic, what is the need to delete at this point?

Oh was heaven having someone hand me a lovely cappuccino! Ended up buying myself a bean to cup machine later on in the year then, great investment.

    No swab data today.

    From Gavan Reilly on Twitter:

Wonder will it be included in the press release though? Probably not likely.

As time goes by you start to divulge more and more information. I tend not to be too generic in my comments either. I was 'spotted' once in the past. I just picked 2000 as a threshold randomly. I am not on any other form of social media either. Well apart from whatsapp.

If every single person could be trusted to be careful we would never need restrictions above level 3.

Obey the restrictions, be sensible, do the minimum.

Unfortunately this is not the case.

You could say the same for every aspect of life, if nobody broke the speed limits we wouldn't have as many crashes, if every single person was good we would have no crime. Why do you expect every single person to be trusted with restrictions, its idiotic to expect 100% compliance.

No but your all in panic mode, its not healthy.

To be honest I see more panic in your obsession with closing schools and at the same time trying to find some sort of solace in convincing yourself that the facts around hospitalisations aren't true.

Realism is needed right now. The two extreme views get us nowhere.

Yup, my take on things too. But we appear to be in the 'optimistic' category.

So by being " less optimistic " others are less realistic also?

Even if we manage to quell this exponential rise in cases by ..when ...mid January !..who's being unrealistic here ? There will still be those infected by all of those cases and their contacts also rolling along for another month after.
So " realistically " / optimistically , with every surge like this, it is at least six weeks before you will start to see any stabilisation of cases ,never mind reduction.
Now that's not pessimism , or my wish, believe me .
I wish it wasn't the case but we will see severe restrictions before we come out if this , at least until mid February .
