Sticking your head in the sand won't help things either. Some people could do with being a little more panicked; we are talking about people's lives here. Have a little compassion.

If 1 in 3 have underlying conditions and we probably have had 200k cases here at least, should we not have far higher death rate and numbers of people getting sick statistically or what is the reason for it.

Underlying conditions are many and varied - some may be more affected by covid than others.

Thinking and acting like an intelligent and civilised human is not 'panic mode'.

Anyone going into a crowded or busy office after the Christmas, with all that's gone on, is at big risk tomorrow. I'm not going in, I will WFH. How they take it, I care not. I'll do my work. Doubt they'll reprimand me. If they do, I'll put in my notice.

  • You do know that if those people fill up the hospitals, that leaves no room for everyone else with every other ailment, right?

I can categorily state that the poster doesn't realise that.

Happy to hear, will be thinking of them. It’s very hard to comprehend with such an overload of information in the media and online, etc, but even for those in their 80s and 90s, the odds are on their side. Good to hear they’re asymptomatic so far, hopefully a good sign.

Thank you, and to the others who shared good stories. Have everything crossed. No symptoms at the moment and exposure likely over a week ago so am thinking positively. Thanks again.

I can categorily state that the poster doesn't realise that.

We've fallen into a parallel universe where people who have underlying condition don't take up spaces or hospital resources, just included in the stats, so it's fine really.

I heard someone (an official and not a commentator) on the radio the other day and they were explaining that people who were close contacts were now not going to be automatically tested due to capacity. And they asked people not to feign symptoms in order to get a test due to capacity issues.

The person said that there had been people ringing up and asking for a test after being a close contact of someone who tested positive, and it being explained to them that the new rules were that they were to self-isolate without a test unless they developed symptoms. The person went on to say that they had had worried people ringing back after 5 minutes who now had suddenly developed a sniffle or a cough etc. in order to get a test. The person was just asking for people not to do that unless they had genuine symptoms.

In any case, if I was a close contact and I didn't have any symptoms, I'd prefer to isolate and hope that I didn't have it rather than travel to a testing centre where 10% or whatever of people who have passed through there that day had it!

That is you and fair enough .
The op I was responding to was thinking of going to get a test done privately

Not asking anyone to make up symptoms.
It's up to op's GP to decide whether to refer or not , and there are other symptoms which are relevant and for a medical professional to decide whether a person's medical history warrants a test over and above the criteria .
That would be down to the GP to make that call , but if they aren't told ALL the symptoms a patient has , over the phone , it makes it difficult for everyone.
It is like the case of the asymptomatic 95 year old , probably not totally asymptomatic but tend to have different symptoms eg some older people develop hypothermia instead of a fever , or go off their food / stop talking .

This day last week 94 people in ICU with influenza alone.

Thanks. Have you a link to that?
What are the ICU numbers today in comparison?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

The hospital cases are generally down to people with an underlying illness. Calm the **** down people.

    How do you know this?

So its not correct in saying 1 in 3 could be seriously affected by this.

Oh fùck, thanks for letting us know we are all in panic mode. Have to reconsider how panic looks like, cuz I'm having few beers after work, reading few posts and watching telly :D

Are you another one that can't accept the situation that it can affect anyone, any age including you? You're not invisible, the virus doesn't care if you have an underlying condition or not.

I think a lot of the underlying illness brigade are using it to make themselves feel better- I think when they think of an underlying illness they automatically assume a terminal condition. I guess it helps them to make sense of the virus and convince themselves they will be fine.

They will more than likely be fine though, that doesn't mean they are not responsible for other less fortunates people welfare.

I don't know where that stat is being quoted from, but the fact I posted still applies - there are many conditions with unpredictable consequences.

Speak for your own rural area. People in this particular area are very much sticking to it.

Oh right, which rural area is that out of interest?
Are cyclists staying within 5km too? How do you know nobody is driving somewhere else to do their walks/runs?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Yeah but you have to admit that there are some exceedingly highly strung people on this thread, always has been ;)

I presume that you haven't lost any loved-ones to Covid, and hence you can smile and make sarcastic comments?

Have you a mortgage? Family to feed ? Bills ?

I take your point but not every one can just take the same approach as you will.

People fear if they don't go in they will lose their job.

Not everyone is in the same boat

    Probably yes.

I'm worried myself how this cluster**** is gonna end. Certainly avoiding catching virus.

Kind of standard on all covid threads is to call peeps who chose to be careful etc. panicking..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

If every single person could be trusted to be careful we would never need restrictions above level 3.

Obey the restrictions, be sensible, do the minimum.

Unfortunately this is not the case.

Of course there are. It's a pandemic and nobody here knows what other people are going through. I'm sure there are plenty here who are having a shiity time and maybe have even lost a loved one. I have.

I find that hard to believe. There is no flu in circulation at present.

How would you know , to be fair?
How long you registered , since end October?
You have some cheek saying that about a 30 piece thread you have not even read , by the looks of some of your posts !
Just re hash of other posts on " less thoughtful " threads .
Maybe people are just irritated having to explain the basics over and over , and that is why you think they are " highly strung".

yup, due to the amount of selfish morons in the country level 5 is the only thing that works unfortunately. a fully compliant level 3 would be perfectly capable of handling this thing.
